As an outsider I personally think there was nothing wrong with Splitpin's replies, emails/posts aren't great at conveying tone, I think you've been a bit over sensitive tbh. Just an observation, don't shoot me down!:)

I won't shoot u down blue, not at all, chances are you're bang on, as I mentioned in an earlier post I'm not feeling my best, that's why in that post I apologised for bringing anything to the table that I shouldn't have.

And you're ded right in that it is very hard sometimes to judge tone of written word. :)

dunx 15 September 2009 09:39 PM

Dunx - shurrup ya plonker lol!
...I'm certainly not "pigeon-hunting" if that's what your getting at (to anybody not sure of what I'm getting at search the term 'external wastegate' and you'll find a rather amusing thread about thier related sound effects), I'm 29, not 19 LOL!

I'll meet you half way though - I did appreciate the sound my SSQV made on my old '96 GC8. I actually kept the bov, I'm currently searching for the correct adaptor flange to fit it to the blob - only found them in the US so far.

I'll take that as a complement :lol1:

I have a "chav" valve on mine, that only "chuffs" at about 1.7 bar and 4500 rpm.... hence no "street cred" for me, but I am very old.....

I think you took everyone's slightly negative responses as criticism, when "we" were really just trying to save you the bother/expense of a fab/re-map for absolutely no performance increase..... had you dug deeper into your future plans/bag of tricks then the knowledgeable out there would have guided you forward.

Just about every trick in the book has been tried somewhere before, so let them guide you too ! I remember the cost of the first "twisted" set-ups were astronomical, so I couldn't indulge.... a couple of years later I can bolt a std. fit 400+ bhp "snail" onto mine in the drive....

Good luck, and keep fiddling.

dunx

P.S. Stuck a manifold & MD321H onto mine and got 392 bhp.... which is about the worst figure anyone has got from a 2.0 STI :lol1::lol1::lol1: So maybe I should shut up and go away ;)

Scoobynodd 16 September 2009 08:11 AM

Hey Dunx,

...ahhh you're running an STi, that answers my question then lol - STi's already have wonderfully strong and uprated internals (well certainly as compared to my far more humble wrx!), and I believe your year of STi is also a semi-closed block too (I maybe wrong).

"chav-valve" - I lol'd :D

See, I'm going to get really quite concerned when it comes to bolting up a bigger turbo as far as my block goes. Wondering at what point I'd have to think about uprated head gaskits, and worse still (as in expense) better pistons and such. Wouldn't have been as much of worry for yourself though I'm guessing - with running an STi I mean you lucky chap.

Oh don't get me wrong - I certainly wasn't expecting any performance increase from setting up my external wastegate, not at all :).

Incidentally (totally changing subject now - maybe I should start a new thread), my previous Impreza was an older '96 (I'm also going back a few cars now as I had 2004 RX8 and then a 2001 X5 after that before coming back to scoobs) and those ones only have the 1 cat, which I was quick to remove along with the rest of the system in favour of a full 3" effort and matching dp. But I didn't re-map - do folks think I did something wrong there by not re-mapping following cat removal?
I'll be moving on to the exhaust on this one shortly (currently favouring the Cobra Sport items). I was originally intending on only removing the up-pipe's pre-cat, leaving the 'centre cat' and replacing the rest of the system, what are folk's thoughts on this/own experiances, i.e. remove the pair of em, leave both.... I am aware of the more legal pitfalls when removing cats (<<incase we have any men of the shield watching lol) so that's ok. And also, are we doing any harm not remapping following cat removal, expecially with these ones having 2 of em. It didn't seem to effect anything on my older one, but yeah I know I'll see more benefit from the mapping - I'm only trying to keep the number of visits to the mapper's to when it's more necessary.

Thanks gang.

(heck, I'd be happy with 392 Dunx lol! - but I see what you're saying. But was that taken from the best out of 3 runs on the rollers, or just one - you know how inconsistant the results can be sometimes :) )

Cheers Badbird, but I'll pass. But only because I'm superstitious about using 2nd hand turbos, if it's something new to the car then I prefer to break in new ones (piece of mind kind of thing), no offense meant tho Badbird and thanks for the offer! :thumb:

Btw tho, what model is it?

dunx 16 September 2009 08:03 PM

You can stick an STI snail (VF35) on yours and get around 340 bhp, BUT it will spool nice and early and hold boost to the red line.... cats be damned, and MI5 and MI6 aren't shopping us to the police (YET !).

When you do de-cat the ecu could do with a tweak as the restriction is much lower, and the boost MAY spike high enough for the fuel cut to engage (safety device for the engine).

Try searching on here for the well worn path to poverty....

Good luck !

dunx

P.S. I bought an August '97 UK turbo and left it standard.... in Dec. 2001 I got offered £13K trade for my current car !

Ooof! 13k! Class! :D

...aye, worth bearing in mind then, last thing I ever want to worry about is det & knock issues and such - eek! (heard some heartbreaking horror stories!)

Cats - fr*kkin silly idea! Do you realise you actually use more fuel on a car with cats as apposed to one that never had em!? This is becasue cats only really work in a certain temperature range, so to get em warmed up, your ecu very kindly throws extra fuel at em (initially) to warm em up!
...i recon they're a joint government & BP conspiracy lol! :D

Scoobynod,

What is the point of this thread? You seem to have all the answers already.

joz8968 17 September 2009 12:50 PM

I had a MKII 16V Golf that easily did 40+ mpg on the motorway, long before cats became the "tree huggers" friend.

Mine does about 20 mpg.

Quite, initial subject seems to have been ably covered now. And noted Scoobynodd - as mentioned right up top I've never had any intent other than to answer the questions you asked, as have others. That's what technical help forums are for. All baggage best left at the door. :)

Really Pav? Heck, I didn't think so! lol No seriously, I'm really not clued in on at all on the finer points of external wastegates. For example I honestly didn't think setting one up would require a re-map as I'd just be swapping one wastegate's duty to another. But I find now that it does, so there you have it lol! ;)

dunx 17 September 2009 07:04 PM

Pssst Scoobynodd, "Pav" is the one and only Paul B. from Zen Performance.....

Without sucking-up, he's been there and done it all, (check out the Time Attack car).

dunx

P.S. Now back to the semi-aimless banter....
