Come off it! You wanted one because they were one of the first cars that had a rear wing that raised itself out of the bootlid at speed!

I remember sitting in one at the NEC Car Show when they were launched over here. My dad was actually quite keen, but the huge selling price and LHD only put him off (and nearly everybody else in the UK!). IIRC 40 grand or thereabouts. 8 grand will get you one now. Most have been imported privately since then.

Nice punt if you've got the balls for it and like torque steer!

My parents never had any cool cars :(
My dad did restore one of these though from scratch. Sold it a few years ago now but he used to go to all the club rallies and that kind of thing. We borrowed it back for my sister to get married in.

TYPE R BRAD 25 August 2009 07:47 PM

Back in the 80's my late' old man had a Lancia Monte Carlo, well even if they were'nt that special, back then me and my mates thought it was like Magnums Ferrari 308:notworthy
Older bro had few nice weapons, Lotus Sunbeam, used to drop me off at school in it and bury it right outside the deputies office, who he hated, then i would take the flack later on:lol:

Couple of RS2000 and RS1600i and a Fiat Strada Abarth;)

Fantom 26 August 2009 01:39 PM

Notorious - Yes its a flat 4. 1500cc I think. I drove it just the once, that was enough!!!

JACKO - My dad was the southern secretary for the club. He used to write in the Joweteer magazine thing. Bob Jones.

ScoobyDriverWannabe 26 August 2009 02:58 PM

Mine had a few Ford Classics. The one that mainly stood out was a Lotus Sunbeam. But that was way before my time. He had about 5 cars written off by buses living at his old house. There wasn't room to build a drive so he just went a few years without having a car.

First car I remember him having was a Orange Ford Cortina he inherited off my granddad. The petrol tank was held in place by some fishing line. Didn't last long before it was scrapped.

He then got a Astra GTE, which was written off a fortnight later when some one went into the back of us.

Replaced that with an Astra SXI which he had for about 10 year.

Some seriously nice cars posted, that D type I think being the best. My Dad always wanted an E type but couldn't have one as he's 6'7 and couldn't drive one comfortably.

Yes, 1500 cc, quite quick for its day and quite ahead of its time, my uncle has hankering for a V8 engined one, or even a Scoob engined one.

Hi, will mention him to my uncle, I have never driven one, it looks, er interesting, the play in the steering is amazing to behold, used to be his daily driver for years, my other uncle has a concourse one, utterly immaculate.

Miura and Stratos were bought ages ago when no-one wanted them. Miura was sold at height of 1980's market.

Tuscan was bought in the US, converted to a race car, raced, swapped for a road Griffith. This was sold but he bought a replacement a few years ago. Exhausts had no silencers at all! Sounded great although you could hear it 5 miles away.

1980 Lola T590 Sports 2000: Proper racing car converted to road legal!!! Sold in 2007.

http://i178.photobucket.com/albums/w...chassis_37.jpg

My brother's just spotted our old Lola for sale at a dealer. Some gimp has painted it in Gulf Oil colours like a Porsche 917.

http://www.totalheadturners.com/carf...la%20T590.html

Anyway that's not the best bit by a long chalk! Just look at that price tag! £34995 !!! :cuckoo::cuckoo::cuckoo:

We sold it as above in late 2007 for about £9000. :brickwall

Even the best race-ready and eligible cars go for £12 - 15k. Even less in USA. This one is now looking scruffier than when we sold it!

Methinks this will not find a Buyer for many years to come unless the Dealer returns to reality.

One other point: the advert mentions two owners: we were owner number 4 and there's been at least another one since then! He's right about Stirling Moss though, owner number 2 had a photo taken of Moss sat in the car at a charity Car Show: that hardly makes it extra special though does it? Also it was built in winter of 1980/1981 not 1988.

the world of classic cars is a pretty murky one especially re provenance and originality

when i was 14 my dad bought a brand new red lotus esprit, was a 2.2 se, e plate but he had a private plate on it, was so cool and i remember everybody staring at it when he took me out it in. and it was rapid, he test drove the turbo but said it was scary fast, lol. he also had one of the first xr3i's when they came out in white, and when i was 21 he bought a renault clio 1.8 16v in white brand new which i persueded him to get so i could drive it, almost got the williams but couldnt get a quote for me at the time, loved that car. i tried to talk him into a brand new sierra cosworth 4x4 at the height of the crazy insurance premiums, they were offering them for 7k of the list price and some ford garages were actually offering a brand new base model fiesta when u bought a cossie cause they just couldnt sell them as insurance was crazy. the ford garage had a black one in the showroom with full black leather recaros etc i remember sitting in it and lusting after it, still want one to this day.

My dads always been in to classic minis he has had hundreds over the years the one i always liked was a rally prep cooper he had in a dark blue. At one point i think we had about 20, me mum wasnt that impressed at the time. He had one of the last rover minis that was really nice in 2000 but sold it. At present he has a 1964 mustang and a 1959 chevy apache pickup which was going to restore but has put it up for sale as he has not got the time.

codie247 28 September 2009 08:36 PM

My dad always had nice cars, to me anyway. rover SD1 V8-S, Granada GHIA 2.8, Zephyrs, Cortinas Mk1-V. Car which i always loved was his Mk1 3.0l Granada GXL!! Chocolate brown with black vinyl roof. Used to love the kickdown on the auto box. Drove it when i was 7 at Ainsdale beach. Awesome! even remember the reg-UTE 888L. Was stolen and wrecked ramming police cars in Wales. Mates used to love getting lifts in this.
Bit like this one- (not my dad btw)

crofty 29 September 2009 04:15 PM

My Dad had one of the first capri's on the road a 1968 1600 GTXLR in metallic green, was shortened 8in by a coach running into the back of it, he then got a super cool 1970 Cortina 1600E in metallic gold, loved that car, then a selection of varous company cars, which included a Audi 200 turbo, very quick car in its day and lots of BMW's
He has just turned 80 this year and has just bought a 2008 BMW 330CI M sport on 19 inch rims......go Dad.

CrisPDuk 29 September 2009 05:25 PM

My Dad can't drive, and the only thing of note I can remember Mum owning, amongst over 3 decades worth of dross, is a Dolomite Sprint in the early '80s, which given her record both before and since, must have been an aberation :lol1:

My dad's best car is probably his current car, a Merc S320 CDi.

However, my favorites would have to be one of these:
