you have pm

mje_wrx 28 December 2008 09:54 PM

what heads r in a 97 p reg wrx, version 3 or 4. guy 8 mile from me has the heads currently on a engine. so im gonna av a look 2moz.

do u think if they r version 3, they will b good 2 swap my valve train over and run.

Brett_555_Sti 28 December 2008 10:38 PM

Version 3 & 4 are the same heads, swap the cams over you have, but they will need to be re shimmed/clearances checked.

mje_wrx 28 December 2008 10:46 PM

whet u mean re shimmed. im gonna swap cams, buckets, valves, springs and reseat the valves when fitting.

172sport 28 December 2008 11:16 PM

All will need measuring and shimming, regardless as its been apart.

Its good practice to check.

mje_wrx 28 December 2008 11:18 PM

what the clearances i need then for mine, as its seems its a v4 head, sti looking cams, shim on top of what looks 2 be v5 buckets, soild lifters.

any ideas

172sport 28 December 2008 11:26 PM

0.2mm inlet, 0.25mm exhaust.

heads need to be torqued down first btw.

you have wrx heads there..

sti has shims under the buckets not on top

So matt - What heads have you actually got on yours? Because that above makes no sense fella.

Jolly Green Monster 29 December 2008 11:13 AM

I suspect they are wrx and therefore it is going to a lot of trouble to move the contents when they are the same

mje_wrx 29 December 2008 05:35 PM

i have wrx v4 heads. sti valves ( IH EX etc) on them.
been told cams r sti as the r4ex etc has 2 lines breaking though it.

im going on what ppl on here told me in reqards to markings on cams and valves to regognise them

The markings were discussed and dismissed elsewhere.
Imho they are standard wrx or uk heads.

Ok, just to confirm then the shims for the buckets are on top or underneath?

Si, yes those markings were a red herring as discussed in the past, none the less matts cams have 2 lines therefore are v3/4....

Matt tbh it doesn't really matter as all you need at the mo is a head cast. When you get one post up a few pics.

mje_wrx 29 December 2008 11:04 PM

thats my thoughts exactly baly. they cud be whatever they want to be, as long as they run, and i get my scoob bk on rd

STI_Baly 29 December 2008 11:44 PM

Just a little warning Matt, if the cams are V4 sti and your running WRX buckets with ontop shims you run the risk of losing a shim at high rpm. But we will deal with that when we find out what buckets you have got.

Jolly Green Monster 30 December 2008 01:04 PM

they are not sti profiles though.. they have too short at duration.. assuming I am remembering the correct picture of them.

they are version 3 wrx imho..

it seems silly to pay lots for a head casing and go to the trouble of regrining the valves in and reshimming them when wrx heads are cheap as a complete set etc..

STI_Baly 30 December 2008 08:26 PM

They look ok to me Matt - so these are V4 Sti Heads? were they complete? cams? buckets? valves?

Jolly Green Monster 30 December 2008 08:31 PM

look good yes :)

what Baly asked! ? :)

mje_wrx 30 December 2008 08:38 PM

the ones in pics are damge to my head now and my current cams. cam sheel hole is bigger compared 2 other where i drilled it

heads iv bought are v4 wrx, not seen cams or buckets on them yet, as engine is still built. but they come with all the valve train, cams, buckets, springs etc, £100 the lot :)

Jolly Green Monster 30 December 2008 09:05 PM

very good..

that head damage can be fixed with a timesert you drill the hole bigger and put a thread in it and then screw a timesert in which has a new thread in at the required side etc..

Si he;s got a bit there on the head which is completely snapped off, Matt what on earth were you doing with that wrecking bar :wonder: :lol1: Matt be delicate fella.

Oh well still i suppose 100 squids isn't a bad deal especially as they're still assembled. :thumb:

lazyboy 30 December 2008 09:51 PM

Glad to be of help boss! Cheers for the compliments to.:norty: :norty:

mje_wrx 30 December 2008 09:57 PM

time serts are all no good. 3 specialists have seen this head, and they cant do anything. time sert wont give me from a m10 x 1.5 to a m6 thread.

nothing snapped off the head, lol, just the bolt snapped in the hold i drilled.

no worries, you saved my build.

Jolly Green Monster 30 December 2008 10:32 PM

so you use a different size timesert and bolt ;)

STI_Baly 30 December 2008 11:16 PM

I obviously wasn't paying enough attention Matt.

Glad your builds on track now.....my concerns are now going to be your STI valvetrain.....as we do not know what you have got, from your last description it sounded like dribs and drabs from different scoobs.....

Your old cams look like V3/4 STI;s btw......maybe get pics of your buckets and shims up next inc springs and valve stamps..
