Guys, what a great day! :thumb: You fellas really put in a great effort...all of you heroes! The cars all held their own, drivers holding their own. Experience of Budgie showing through, Ricky picked it up really easily, Guv going hell for leather everywhere on track (and off) and ash showing that the classic is not to be messed with!
Great to be in-car with you guys too. Will try to post trackside video footage soon, it's not great but the cars all sound awesome as they pass.:norty:

Well done to all!!!

Luther 24 August 2008 08:51 AM

A perfect day, one that Carlsberg couldn't have done better!

Right from the start when Budgie; Mrs Budgie; James; Mike; Guv; Luther & myself all met at 6.45 am in Uxbridge, all the way to the end of the day, it all went smoothly with no mishaps or problems. It was more than I could have excpected from a novice to trackdays & a newbie in the Scooby fold. There are not many places/individuals & groups of people, out there that are as welcoming & friendly & helpful to others they have not known long. Thanks MSOC. And all brought together by one thing,.........a passion for cars & friendly commoradary, sadly lacking in society these days.
Now that Iv got that out of the way, we can put down the kleenex & group hugs & talk about the days events! :luvlove: (Dont think that smiley has been used before!)

Had some laughs getting up there in convoy, running into evo crew convoy; a skyline (guvs mate, they had a conversation with the windows open while cruising in fast & middle lane!) & watching out for motorway police with our walkie talkies! Filled up with Vpower before going in, that was after I took a few detours trying to find it :D

Lots of cars in paddocks & most with a lot of bhp, IMO most pushing 400bhp ish, but surprisingly a lot of newbies, at least a third of the 77 cars. We found a nice quiet spot with a lot of space to use as our base. We met Ash & his mate up there who had done some hard work to Ash's classic scooby & was running fine all day :luxhello: No need for the flat bed really! Also met up with another scooby owner (forgotten ur name mate, sorry) from up North, really friendly chap who had a lovely Litchfield JDM Hawkeye with the Type 20suspension.

After the sighting laps (before which my tripod camera stand fixing was taken away :( ) cars were then allowed out in an open pit lane format. No more than 36 cars out at once. But throughout most of the day there were never more than IMO 25 to 30 cars out there. Only straight after opening/lunch/or track closure was there ever any rush to get on the track. So IMO better to avoid those times of the day. I also found that as the day wore on & people got more faster/daring/tired (including myself) the track became a little bit more a competitive, faster, a less courteous place. Having said that, apart from a handful of idiots (who you will always get everywhere) most drivers were fine on the track. The funny thing is I only had a couple of drivers who wouldnt move over etc in the morning. But later on in the day when I had some free tuition with an instructor, that is when every type of clown decided to take to the track around me. But the instructor who became furious at their actions duly noted their numbers & they all got a bollocking straight after! Apart from the latest shape blue Scooby who decided to swipe me, half on the grass while I was indicating back left & missed by inches. He got flashed by the instructor & number noted & two fingers by me. I think he realised he fu&ed up & straight after left Silverstone without comming back into paddock!

The tuition IMO is a must, the earlier the better. The instructor showed me lines that I hadn't figured out; how to cut corners out & make them almost straight; where to brake harder; where not to brake & keep foot planted; where to use all of the track; how to keep throttle more balanced; etc etc & all in a 4 laps. Not bad trying to learn all that while driving with new lines in certain places & new braking points & looking out for idiots as mentioned above!

I found that my first morning session was just a messy; fast blur & mainly just getting to know the car & getting it sideways & opp locking it! Great fun but not the way to be quick. Iv only had the scooby 6 months; never owned an AWD drive turbo car before & it was the first time I had got it sideways or at any speed, so I wasn't excpecting any miracles to begin with. The 2nd session I took MadisonMonkey with me which was excellent as he could tell me the things I was doing wrong which is exactly what I neeeded. His advice which I took on board immediately helped, as in the following 2 sessions i was a lot faster around the track. I achieved this by actually going slower & braking harder & earlier into corners & learning which gear to be in for each corner & in general trying to be smoother & more controlled. Thanks James your advice worked a treat :)

Budgie just got straight into race mode from the word go & was calm & controlled throughout his sessions & blindingly quick too. While we were faffing about which gear to be in & driving too fast into corners & getting into corners untidy (especially in the morning), Budgie just got straight into his stride. I think the experience showed....& the old age!"!!!!! :lol1:
Ace driving & one quick car that gave a lot of Evos a shock, belive me I know I was driving behind him on many such occassion.

Guv was a no holes barred style driver who just went for it from the word go, no fear! As we found out near the end of the day when he wouldnt come back in & god knows what mayhem he caused out there. Im sure Luther can fill you in as he was his co driver for most of the day. Also a big thanks to Luther for making the huge effort of walking halfway round Silverstone, into the grandstands to take pic after pic. Great effort & support mate :thumb:

I can go on & on writing but this is getting more like my old A-level English work now, so better wrap it up! Saying that, once I v had a break Im sure Il write a part two :brickwall

Finally a mention on the cars differing perfomances in general:
Though there were cars ranging from 200 bhp upwards to 700 bhp plus, most IMO were around the 350 to 400 bhp mark, at a very rough guess. But they all were differing weights; engines; tyres; gearing; & more importantly, drivers. There were IMO no hard & fast conclusions to be made about most cars, be it Evos; Skylines or Scoobys. Yes there were a few mental 600/700 bhp evos & skylines etc & Radical etc that were super fast, but they were the exceptions. Most were similarly matched & the only real reason why these cars were overtaking one & not the other was mainly due to the driver. I was overtaken at certain points in the day by different cars & maybe at other points in the day I overtook those same cars. I was taken by Evo 9's & Evo 5 s & the odd skylines but I also overtook various Evo 8/9s Fq 340/360 & near the end of the day an R33 Skyline & then two evo Fq's in a row. So there are no real conclusions regarding comparisons with different cars.

What knowledge I did gain, which was extremley useful & important was regarding my own driving skills & knowledge of how my cars behaves at speed & in corners & spins (as I found out on my last lap, over excited after taking some fast cars, super hot melting tyres ater 15 laps, which is way too long out there, & a fast 180 degree spin which could have been horrible with the wall being 30 metres away  ). I learnt how to control my car when fishtailing , opp lock, braking cornering, gear changing, revs etc etc it was invaluable experience. I also discovered that the Spec C out of the box is an awesome car that I will probably never be able to drive to the cars limits. The power from the engine & especially the braking was amazing, in fact amazing doesnt cover it either. IMO I was able to brake later than almost any car out there & thats with std brakes. A lot of this is to do with the fact the car doesnt weigh too much, hence less inertia. I was able to catch most faster cars down hangar straight, at the end of hanger straight sharp right hander & the subsequent chicane. Iv realised that IMO the car does not need any power mods or braking mods the way it is. (though I will try differing pads & maybe discs when they go, but calipers & disc size is perfect for spec c). What I did realise is that the spec c supspension though superb & 10/10 for fast road, is probably more 7/10 for track driving. (Bearing in mind that the spec c does not have as good suspension as the spec c RA, RAR, or S204). So any mods that I may do will first be in the suspension dept before anything else. Iv also decided that I now do need a 2nd set of wheels just for the track as it is a bit risky trying to drive home in same wheels every time. In fact iv got so excited Iv put a deposit down on some already!

Just to say a special thanks to all the people involved: Budgie; Mrs Budgie; James; Mike; Guv; Luther; Ash & friend & matey in the silver litchfield from up north (sorry mate forgot ur name :( )

Shiver 24 August 2008 04:03 PM

Yeah I forgot to get a passenger lap in your TSL machine too Budgie!!

ps just spent all morning: with tar remover; de greaser; Jeffs Acrylic; a bit of claying; Megs Carnuba Wax; Paint sealent on wheels etc etc & have'nt even started on the interior yet. The car was covered in thousands of dead flies; fuel; grease; & rubber streaks, it was quite disturbing, almost felt guilty puting it through all that!
