:D

Damage doesn;t bother me too much (it's coming in December for GT5 prologue) But the F1 car in GT5 with a wheel is just unbeleivably good.

Just about to download the Grid demo - Can't have enough decent racing games as far as I'm concerned.

StickyMicky 17 May 2008 12:19 PM

the damage is GT5 is never going to be any good, i have no doubts that it will get added at some point, but i bet its crap, you might have a bumper missing and the car might only give 80% of the power, but its never going to be a decent damage model, the best damage model i have ever seen has been in LFS for the pc

but that game is calculating everything, suspension angles, clutch preloads, the whole lot, GT5 will just be a simple

"if bumper = no then power = 85%" IMO

the time for GT5 is over, its been drawn out to long and left itself open to attack, the cars look nice, but its all just eye candy with ****e physics underneath. i`m not saying the grid has better physics ;) its just that GT5 seams to have concentrated on the wrong things and missed out the ones that people want (a fun game that lets them think they are driving a fast car)

the only thing i think it has going for it, is that its for a console, and i can see PC gaming dieing a horrible death within the next few years!!

console racers will be where its at in the future

Of course, each to their own.

The reason I prefer Grid is that the damage is so realistic (or severe) that it really does make you thikn about how you drive. Although I have tried to drive sensibly in various GT games, ultimately I knew that I couldn't retire due to damage, and for me at least, that took somethig away from the game.

I think that GT is probably more accurate in handling, but as a racer that makes you work hard, Grid is streets ahead.

All IMHO of course! ;)

It would be even better if it handled anything like an F1 car ;) :D

It does - As far as any of us are able to tell what an F1 car handles like!

No other racer I have ever played comes close to that F1 car in GT5. Probably too much with the SixAxis, but with a DFP it's just awesome.

Back to grid..

Hmmm, I am not convinced. Looks nice, damage is spectacular, sense of speed is great. But the steering is far too sharp.

Looks like it could a be great single player experience though, with the career path etc. I did like the Toco Race driver games for that.

Have you played Grid with your wheel Pete? I personally didn't find the sterring too sharp, but I have heard a few people say this. If so, is it markedly better? I would imagine that a wheel would hepl in the drifting events.

I must admit, whether it is realistic or not, and the steering too sharp, I find it hugely enjoyable, and that's all that matters really. Looking forward to the full game.

I do hope they put decent damage modelling in to GT5, I may even buy if if they do.

Not yet - I'l try it during the week and see if it makes any difference - usually when it too sharp with a controller it's ok with a wheel.

Geezer 18 May 2008 10:04 PM

Here's one for all you wheel owners with PS3.

What do you attach it to? Am I unusual in having the PS3 in the lounge? I have no table/desk to attach to like for my PC, so would a wheel purchase be ultimately fruitless for me?

Geezer

PeteBrant 18 May 2008 11:52 PM

I have my PS3 in the lounge - It fit on the coffee table - Its not ideal but it does the job. If you are going to go for something like a DFP, then it no good on your lap, the force feedback will send it flying.

You can buy lap board type things, that you sit on and give you a surface to mount the wheel on - Dunno if the are any good though - Amazon do them.

I tried the demo but I wasn't impressed with the handling.....way too artificial like imo. The only thought that came into my mind while playing the demo was oh well another game I don't have to buy.......:p

TBH handling is a hard thing to convey in a demo, all racing games seem weird at first, once you're acustomed with it it usually slots in to place, but it normally takes a good deal of races.

Ghetto Dude3 19 May 2008 10:16 AM

DFP needs clamped down, its a proper beast of a wheel, remember its got 900 degrees rotation, that sucker needs nailed to a concrete block :D

Just to harp on about it some more.

When in the F1 in GT5, the feeback is incredible. Very strong, and when you get up to near top whack.... well, I won't spoil it ;)

Dream Weaver 22 May 2008 10:50 AM

Tried this on PS3 last night.

Visually its stunning and I quite enjoyed it, some of the details are excellent and I like the flashback addition:

Touring car race: Strange light steering but the crashes were good.

Drifting: Really good - spent an hour replaying this race.

San Fran Muscle cars - Excellent, as bob says Burnout meets Forza, really enjoyed this bit.

So thumbs up from me, will probably buy it although I may be getting bored of the whole racing sim thing, there is not much new these days.

I remember the guys behind Final Fantasy were going to do some sort of RPG based on cars and racing but it never happened - maybe its time that idea was brought forward again?
