finally some proof that most of us MY00 owners, who have driven earlier cars are not insane :p :) .

great results,now where can I get a AE800.

WREXY 27 January 2002 11:24 PM

This may be a dumb question, but since the AE802 green ECU runs richer and less advance, does this mean it is safer to run higher boost, such as with an EBC, on this ECU than it would be to run on the black label AE 800 ECU which runs slightly leaner?

Cheers,

Wrexy

babber 27 January 2002 11:34 PM

OMG, if John carries on like this we'll be looking at multiple boot systems for the scooby. Maybe we should get a duel ECU loom adaptor with switchable maps ;) LOL I've got a lovely Sony Vaio waiting to be installed in the scooby;)

John I'm not taking the piss here mate. Your a breath of fresh air for us Scooby drivers....

Cheers Phill C

PS John don't buy a M3 they're not worth the money, and you'd leave us.

I don't know much about the older ECUs.
I _think_ you might have a '98MY ecu there.
Last of the '98s maybe ?
Either that, or it's a version I haven't seen before.
Anyone know a quick/obvious way to tell ?

>Oh yes, the colour is more or less brown (dark red)
>while the colour in my car is purple PPP :-)

Not sure what you mean here.
You've had it chipped you mean ?
If so, it's a '98, since 99/00s don't have rom sockets.

GTJ

have a look at your seatbelt, that should give you a rough built date for the car.

simon_prickett 28 January 2002 10:19 AM

Hi there,

Power Engineering tried their ECU in my car when it was in for a rolling road test... car is MY98 UK turbo wagon, ITG filter, Magnex decat centre and Scoobysport back box - std downpipe.

Results for MY98 std ECU:

http://www.btinternet.com/~simon.pri...dyno_graph.jpg

Results comparing PE ECU and mine:

http://www.btinternet.com/~simon.pri...no_graph_2.jpg

Hmmm, tempting! Wonder what it'd do with a downpipe?

I dunno exactly which PE ECU this was, I believe it to be the one currently advertised on their website for about £600.

(Edited to get URL right)

Simon.

Steve,

My car is from 1999 (seatbelts 0199, bumper, brakes, Royal Silver paint).

At the moment I've a PPP in my car (that is why the STI sticker is pink).

The original ECU has a dark red or brown sticker on it with the number AE781.
I don't know why there is a difference. The only thing I know is that the none UK and Japanese cars have an external immobiliser. Could this explain the difference in code?

GTJ

StephenDone 28 January 2002 11:47 AM

Hi GTJ,

Are you saying yours has an immobiliser built in ?

Steve

Subzero 28 January 2002 12:31 PM

What have I done Babber? I didn't intend this idea to go this far...

BTW i've bought all the spare AE800's and 801's in the country so queue here ;)

Seriously though, I'll get hold of an AE800 and get along to PE for some comparitive runs (all three).

Floyd

T-uk 28 January 2002 12:37 PM

me first for a 800 ;) ,please

ScoobySnack 28 January 2002 02:41 PM

why not wait and go for the P.E ECU when out?

J

babber 28 January 2002 03:34 PM

Floyd,

It was your idea to try the MY99 ECU, I was just saying cheers to you.

Cheers Phill C

GTJ 28 January 2002 04:32 PM

Steve,

Yes, there is a separate immobiliser build in, approved by the TÜV (Germany) and RDW (Netherlands). This is also the reason I didn't have to program my ECU for my key recognition.

:) If the AE800 performs better then the AE802 …… what should the results be for the AE781 or better an AE001 :) :)

StephenDone 28 January 2002 04:40 PM

I'd have to get hold of one to see.
I'll put that on my to-do list :-)

Anyone else seen any other different versions of ecu in a 99/00MY WRX ?

So far, we think the list is:
ae800 Black
ae801 Brown
ae802 Green
ae781 Brown

I bet there's an ae780 with a black label, and an ae782 with a green one...somewhere ! Anyone ?

Steve

Floyd 28 January 2002 08:32 PM

Thanks Phil, not having a go at you, I just didn't expect the idea to be examined this deaply.

I still think that Subaru were improving the emissions, year on year, as all manufacturers do. It's just that they thought we wouldn't notice that they were sacrificing the performance at the same time. We are, after all, buying performance cars, perhaps they think we're stupid and wouldn't notice their subtle meddling? I guess the finance guys were given the option of development costs to get performance AND low emmissions/good mpg or spend 'next to nothing' on a bit of 'tight-fisted' code on the ECU. That's what you get when you trust these decisions to button pushers.

I wonder how many accounts own Subaru's? not many me thinks because it wouldn't make sense.....

Rant over.

You get the picture.

If I knew what I knew now I would not have bought a new MY00 import but a pristine piston slap free low miles example of the last of the TD05 cars, put some good wheels, brakes, suspension and a FMIC on it with a remap. I would I think have a better car.

T-uk 30 January 2002 01:47 PM

ScoobySnack "why not wait and go for the P.E ECU when out?"

sounds great but I like track days and do not think that the scoob drivetrain is up to taking 211bhp@wheels on track.this is only my opinion-flame suit on.

StephenDone 30 January 2002 03:37 PM

My drivetrain on track was fine. You don't want to see my tyres though :-)

Steve

john banks 30 January 2002 05:30 PM

211 PAW PE is very different to 211 PAW Star though!

I challenge anyone on stock turbo and intercooler to get over 180PAW at Star on a MY99/00 UK spec and no more than 1.25 bar. A pint is on it at least!

And if you do tell me how you did it. Any ECU you like.

Now someone will dig out something to prove me wrong!

[Edited by john banks - 1/30/2002 5:35:24 PM]

T-uk 31 January 2002 10:29 AM

john,

Dave Brown has got 200.5bhp@wheels @1.3 bar(held from 3500rpm onwards) but has not posted his latest mods.see Scotland forum.

if he is still on a standard turbo, running a top mount and standard ECU,the challenge has been made :p .

john banks 31 January 2002 11:09 AM

"If he is on the standard turbo" I will buy you both a pint. WTF has he done to that thing

As Sam says just look at the compressor map....

1.3 bar at 6000rpm - everyone is saying stick to 1.0 bar max at those revs.

B**GER - thought I would have had him next time!

If it is a TD04L AND SAFE I will clearly need to do the same to mine!

T-uk 31 January 2002 04:56 PM

well,it looks like I have sourced a MY99 "T" reg black AE800 ECU :D ,so hopefully my car will get the kick up the ar5e it needs.

phoned AWD in Perth and they gave me the number for Grade A Subaru, who are breaking a few MY99's ;) .

john banks 31 January 2002 05:05 PM

Great stuff John.

T-uk 31 January 2002 05:16 PM

might get you to work some magic on it :D

T-uk 01 February 2002 12:59 PM

could stephendone, babber or floyd confirm these numbers from the ECU I have recieved.it is from a MY99 T reg and is to go in a MY00 W reg.

black and silver label with:
large E3
22611 AE800
A18-000 D97 8x15

thanks :)

StephenDone 01 February 2002 01:30 PM

That should be fine.

The 800, 801 & 802 are identical hardware, except for the colour of sticker. It's the code & data that vary slightly.

Go ahead - I've had all three in my car.

Cheers

Steve

T-uk 01 February 2002 01:38 PM

cheers, will let you know how I get on with it.

Subzero 01 February 2002 01:59 PM

I agree with Stephen that the AE 800 will be fine, also don't worry about reprogramming the keys. That's boll...s just slap it in and away you go.

Q for Stephen, did the AE800 perform the best out of the three? I am on the 801 at the mo.

Q for T-UK, How much did they charge ya?

F

StephenDone 01 February 2002 02:06 PM

I didn't really try the 801 much. I just tested that it started the car. If I get time, I'll dyno all three this weekend, back to back on the same car.

Steve

T-uk 01 February 2002 03:02 PM

performance restored :D :D :D :D :D :D

tried to get hesitation between 2000/3000rpm-none :D :D :D :D :D :D

car used to run out of puff at 4500rpm,now hits about 4250rpm and pulls like a train :D :D :D :D :D :D

I put in the AE800 flicked the key and she burst into life.let idle for 2min just to make sure it stayed running then went for a gentle run to try and get hesitation.after 5min pushed a bit harder to check boost.started off lower at 14psi and rose after a few on boost/off boost runs in forth, between about 2500 to 4000rpm.boost finished up at 16.5psi peak from AE802's 15psi,this is in forth, never got into fifth so overboost may be a problem in fifth on cold days.gave it the message on a 3rd/4th gear road and the difference over 4000rpm is huge  :D .

lets just hope it stays like this :( .will report how it goes over the weekend but if it stays like this my womans going to be walking like john wayne come monday  .
