if the coil pack got a crack in it start the car up at night and look.
you will see lil blue sparks

lad sed it wasnt the same problem as his did it in every gear and reckons it sounds more like a maf fault??

if its a maf fault you would experience it in 3rd 4th and 5th if drining hard (full boost will be attained in these gears) so if its just in 5th then its not that. Also the maf you should have on your car is quite a strong maf.

How do you know its 5500rpm if your rev counter isnt working?

To check the coil packs there is a grommet type thing on the end, you need to carefully check under this and any cracks should be evident. You wouldnt necessarily see any arcing in the dark, due to this insulating tip and also the location of the coil packs and where they sit etc.

LICKLE DAN 01 February 2008 12:07 PM

rev counter worx, occasionally get it in 4th at about 80 lite throttle though, use to do it in other gears as well but been better lately

jaytc2003 01 February 2008 12:25 PM

okay well start with the basics, you have already changed the plugs, however it may be an idea to gap the, to 0.7 or 0.6mm, whilst regapping them check you coil packs for cracks bits missing etc, underneath the grommet thing on the end, be careful doing this though. With it being nearly 13 yrs old now, if the coil packs havent been changed before then I reckon there is a good chance it is them.

Also do you have a boost gauge? See what boost its at when it happens. could be a sticky actuator

andyxros 01 February 2008 04:14 PM

mine did same today bang on that seed just went flat and would not go past. had re map yestrday so waiting to get intouch with them. just feels like a speed limiter. wasnt there before anyway so see wat he says. if it is a limiter actual road speed will be 112/115 as speedo is always wrong to a persentage. on psi3 monitor 30 on clock was 26 on monitor. so am thinking the base map put on on my car is from sti version 6 so might have limiter on now which could be a good thing????/

LICKLE DAN 01 February 2008 05:19 PM

jay heres my plan. like u say im waiting for a feeler gauge hopefully be here tomorrow. check gaps and coils. hopefully find a broken one fingers crossed! if not might buy either a maf sensor off ebay or some brand new coils. try the coils in take it for a drive. if not cured whip em off and re sell em get money back still be as new and for 170 for 4 new coils thats well cheap from what i ve read on scooby net. if coils no good get a maf try that if no good stick back on ebay get money back.

my opinion on the high reving on start up is idle control valve. will try to clean that if someone can give me advice on how to, but im no expert just a guess.

if i cant do any of the above and still the same i aint got a clue. deffo not speed limiter as it use to go well b4 this. it boosts the same as it always has 1bar or 1.1 bar cant remember without checking

LICKLE DAN 02 February 2008 12:03 PM

ok just had the plugs out checked gaps seem to be ok - 0.7mm. had a look at coils removed grommets no cracks or splits in rubber or plastic on coils look in very good condition. i might get a second hand maf off ebay and try that?? any suggestions. when my car was running and revved it under engine very very lightly could hear i think the boost solenoid clicking away is that normal???

LICKLE DAN 02 February 2008 05:50 PM

does do it on light throttle at 0.4bar in second, 3rd and fourth too.

ZEN Performance 02 February 2008 06:30 PM

What exactly have you changed, or asked someone to change on your car lately? Do not leave anything out, at all.

Sounds exactly like the speed limiter, in every way, and the fact that it didn't do it, doesn't mean it isn't doing it now.

LICKLE DAN 02 February 2008 07:09 PM

how can it be when it soes it in second , 3rd and 4th too?? havent changed anything

20withascooby 03 February 2008 09:49 AM

Your car does 120mph in second?

LICKLE DAN 03 February 2008 04:34 PM

HESITATES in second third and 4rth speedo works fine. notice now when it starts up and warms up for a couple of mins revs hunting fom 1000 - 2000 then warms up and ok?? i took the top of idle control valve of and cleaned it

scooby_mark 03 February 2008 05:02 PM

i was going to say has it got an ra box in it, as they only do 120, but sounds like maf mine went and it would drive ok steady but when i pushed it wouldn't go over 60.

LICKLE DAN 03 February 2008 05:07 PM

no ra box m8 use to run ok gonna try a maf in it

jonny81 03 February 2008 05:14 PM

The first impreza i had did this, i fixed it by cleaning the maf sensor. Took 5mins & costs nothing, just be gentle with it.

LICKLE DAN 03 February 2008 06:17 PM

tried that m8 cleaned it with maintenance sprai

weeebell 07 February 2008 08:57 PM

Bought and changed my MAF today, reset the ECU and took it a run.

Its like driving a different car. Not lumpy any more and pulling strongly in every gear.

Not saying thats whats definately wrong with yours but as the symptoms you described are virtually identical to mine, its got to be worth a go.

Do you know anyone with the same make/model as yours who might be willing to let you try theres to save you spending any cash?

LICKLE DAN 07 February 2008 10:03 PM

no i dont
