can't you get those risers which turn the card through 90deg?

I have an XFX 7900GTX and I can run the UT3 demo quite playably at 1920x1440, wheras in Bioshock I have to go down to 1280x960 and it still struggles a little in big close up fight sequences.

You are going to be struggling to get a new card though. As far as I'm aware no-one makes a low profile card based on the high performance chips, since most of them take up two full size slots! You might be able to find a low profile 8600 or something.

I'd also question if you have PCI-E slots at all. Can you post the exact model number of your system, or even better, pop the lid off, take a photo of the expansion slots and post it here.

Thank you for your reply. I don't think it is a low profile slot as the case looks full size to me. It is a HP DC7600.

manual here

looks like PCIe is supported

Lum 16 November 2007 03:41 PM

Like many Compaqs that model appears to be available in both tower and small form factor desktop variants. If yours is full size then great. It's full size if the blanking plates at the back of your PC are approx 4 inches high. Low profile is approx 2 1/2 inches.

Now compare your slots to the ones in these pictures

http://resources.vr-zone.com/elladan...sion_slots.jpg

The blue slots in this picture (and the identical white one) are PCI-E x16 which is what you will need for a graphics card. The tiny little one (3rd from left) is PCI-E x1 which is no good. The leftmost one is a custom jobbie specific to that motherboard and the remainder are standard PCI which is also no good.

The slots at the top of this picture are PCI-X slots which are also no good to you. The brown slot is an AGP Pro slot which is backwards compatable with standard AGP slots and therefore is useful.

Lastly we have a picture of a standard AGP slot, this will also be useful to you if you have one.

It has a PCI-E and a PCI E * 16 slot apparently (HP Compaq dc7600 Business PC - Worldwide QuickSpecs (it is the Convertable Mini-Tower)

UT3 turns up on Saturday and I still haven't found a card for £100 -- REALLY I have to spend £160?!

I ended up with the ATI 3870 as it's ending up in my media centre PC.

You can get them cheaper that the 8800GT's - but they are a tad slower (not so much as you'd notice in real terms

The new ATI 3850 is gonna be your best card by far for not far off of £100.

BlkKnight 23 November 2007 08:37 AM

the 3850 is quite a poor performer.

You are better off stretching and getting a 8800GT 256 meg of the 3870 as I've done.

The jump up in performance between the 256meg and the 3870 it quite high,

But its also another £45ish quid. Ive just gone for the BFG OC2 512mb version of the 8800gt. Hopefully it arrives on mon/tues from Overclockers.

Just need to upgrade CP/mobo and ram now :)

Good luck on the GT arriving :)

I'm waiting for a GT with a decent cooling solution to come out.

Thank you for your help.

In the end I bought a Nvidia 8600 GTS. Not as good as some of the cards mentioned here, but my (LCD) monitor only has a maximum resolution of 1280 * 1024 so anything else seemed like overkill.

Unreal is very good!

Damn and blast.... whilst I was waiting to buy something similar to this stateside in Jan, I can't find anything quite as quick as this and I'm concerned that availability in-store will still be an issue... so...

.... accidentally clicked 'buy' on this baby https://www.overclockers.co.uk/showp...odid=GX-000-ZT

With luck I'll see it this week.... fingers crossed.

Still need my ordered 8800GT to turn up... no sign yet!

Tried, for a laugh, to play Crysis on my current set-up last night....

E6600 2 x 2.4GHz mildly OCd to about 2.6GHz
2GB RAM
7900GS

...ran like a dog. With settings on 'high' I managed about 11 FPS.... Very High was seeing 5.

After playing on a friends Quad core beasty with an 8800GT - and seeing it hit about 40+ FPS - but with only one core active, and even then only tickling it (prob about 20% most of the time) - Crysis appears to be all about GPU performance.

Hence the 8800GT @ 700MHz should help me play Crysis at reasonable frame rates.... hopefully - 'cus it looks great, but sluggish, at the moment.

Meanwhile, I'll keep checking order status on OverClockers.co.uk with crossed fingers!
