Update from the Essex fire web site:-
At 12:30pm, a search was launched for persons reported missing from staff on site. This is a precautionary measure. At 12:35pm, Essex crews are liaising closely with Coryton's own specialist fire teams. At 12:40pm, All persons are accounted for at the incident. I am really glad everone is okay! |
Brilliant news Lady Fozz, really glad he is ok!! I bet his phone is full of text messages as I've sent 2 and there must have been plenty more from everyone else!!

No worries Lady F thats what we are here for.
Same when the bombings happened. |
Just got home from work, really glad everyone is ok!! I hope your feeling better now Yvette, must have been terrible :(
Betts said earlier that he couldn't stop shaking, and that was a good hour after it happened. Was starting to get worried for a bit, can't loose a newage driver (Fozzy), need as many as possible to beat those pesky Classics :D |
As Lady Fozz says, thanks for everyones concern, I was on my bike course at the time so had my phone off, when we stopped for lunch, I was inundated with texts and calls from people asking if I was ok!
Spoke to Betts earlier and he was in our workshop at the time when there was an ennormous bang which sounded like a truck had driven into the roller shutter, the Electrician wlaked outside to investigate and his word were" OH F C U K, time to get out of here!" Calor was evacuated with many people panicking and driving off in their cars, so there will probably be an investigation as to why people didn't follow the emergency proceedures! After the fire had calmed down, Betts had to check the perimeter fence for damage, and he said that a lot of trees in between calor and Petroplus had been blown over by the force of the explosion!! Just as I got back to Corringham, I saw 2 fire engines leaving Coryton, so things must be under control now. |

I think the evacuation wasn't helped by the fact that we were moved outside of the building which still offered no protection from a potential second explosion. Petroplus are launching a major investigation into why the flame was being pushed to burn so much pressure off. |

Petroplus are launching a major investigation into why the flame was being pushed to burn so much pressure off. I've been at Calor for almost 10 years now and in that time, I've been trained as a fire fighter, something which doesn't happen now unfortunately and again, in that time, I only know of 1 practical major Emergency drill being carried out and that was 6 years ago. I personally think that it's down to the management to carry out these sorts of excercises regularly so people know exactly what to do, and they are prepared to some degree. The worrying part is, Calor alone has a storage capacity of 850 tonnes of commercial grade LPG, and the predicted blast zone of a BLEVE on site(Boiling Liquid Expanding Vapour Explosion) is a 400 metre radius, it's something not likely to happen under normal circumstances as the fire pumps etc are regularly check by Betts and myself every thursday after we test the fire alarms. So in my opinion, the lack of drills at calor could cause a bad situation to get worse, ie people panicking. |
oh dear,
I'm glad everyone is fine see you all soon xx |
Phew! What a day!
Thanks for the concern folks.....was almost crispy fried Fozz! :D |
