i always thought that the resolution is the amount of pixels? the virea do state a 1080p signal on a 37" inch screen. ive also seen a 42" plasma for sale with 1080p for just over a grand so it isnt that far out of reach

It is.

Kieran_Burns 30 May 2007 04:56 PM

I was inder the impression that the Plasmas only produced a fairly low resolution:

1024 X 768: found on 42" & 43" plasma screens
1280 X 768: found on 50", 61", & 63" plasma screens
1365 X 768: found on 50", 61", & 63" plasma screens

So the most vertical lines you can get is 768...

This is why I'd go for something like this:

PDP-5000EX Pioneer Plasma Screens - Plasma

Nothing else needs saying, possibly the best screen I have seen, Pity I can`t afford one.

Jase

Kieran_Burns 02 June 2007 11:29 PM

Yup - that backs up what I said:

"The PDP-5000EX has a resolution of 1920 x 1080 and is capable of displaying the entire range of High Definition sources, including 720p, 1080i and 1080p – this is the first plasma display capable of 1080p."

Which is why LCD is better for the resolution (for less money)

sti-04!! 03 June 2007 12:21 AM

The blacks are crap on LCDs

What the footie like on them ??

Barmyclown 03 June 2007 12:28 AM

Compared to plasma yeah they can look a bit grey, there are getting a bit better though, but you can always turn the backlight down a bit, or keep some lights on that will help a bit. But if money no object go for the pioneer. In fact I would be tempted to wait a bit save a few pennies and get the pioneer anyway. Don`t wait for SED or OLED. They are both at least a couple of years away, for the likes of us mere mortals if they make it at all.

Deep Singh 03 June 2007 08:48 AM

What Hi Fi this month has a group test of 50 inch plasmas and though it was a close call, this Samsung beat the Panny TH 70X.

Samsung PS-50Q97HDX Plasma Television - price comparison

The review in the mag stated the Sammy was 1080p but I'm not sure if that is accurate, it may be 1080 with 1080p processing like the Panny.

I've got an order for the Panny but may cancel it for the Sammy, esp if it does have 1080p

Nearly every review of this Plasma all state that this is probably the best commercial Plasma available to date. Like you Jase, wish I had the dosh!

Let your eyes do the choosing for you .... note the reports and tests, but your eyes are the best judge.

the 5000 is an awesome panel, but according to a friend who was at the pio neer launch this year, the new 50" is better, apparently. and at 3k significantly cheaper. shame i havent got 3k tho :D

Pixels is the first stat - 1920 for example. Then the other one is amount of 'scan' lines ina frame - e.g 1080. Tha'ts how I understand it anyway - two rather different things.

I have the Sony 50" LCD projector - fine for the money [esp now in Makro:(]. But am biding my time for a 1080P CRT! CRT is the new way forward - they are just soooo much better. Every time I see one I think this.

My last LCD (Sharp Aquos 32") which ended up dead had a pixel refresh of 6ms.

I rent my teles because of previous out of warranty problems.

The replacement is a Samsung 32" brand new - which has a pixel refresh of 8ms.

Something tells me Samsung are thererfore pooer...

Any ideas? Help me!

If your eyes can detect the difference between 6 and 8 MILLISECONDS, then you are a far better man than I.................. ;)

Cool - so the Samsung is poorer and the only 6ms I can find are the Sharp, Panasonic and Sony...
It isnt a case of whether I can tell the difference - although on Fish's serves at Wimbledon last night I could. It's a a case of being given a sub standard replacement tv.
I thought I was right. I will contact my rental company accordingly. :thumb:

Cheers Geezer!

Not quite.

1080p refers to the resolution - I.e. the number of pixels. In the case of 1080p it's 1920X1080 pixels. (the "p" referring to a progressive scan image - I.e. the entire image is refreshed in one hit, and not odd and even lines alternative as in interlaced images)

I think we are saying the same thing, except I still think in horizontal scan lines and you think in phosphor dot type thingys :D

PeteBrant 04 July 2007 08:25 AM

I bought a Sharp LC42XD1EA at the weekend. It;s a 42" 1080p LCD to replace my ageing plasma and very nice it is too.

It has a setting called "tru-d" for use on SD mages, that has to be seen to be beleived

messiah 04 July 2007 10:12 AM

Samsung do not make Sony's TV's - tha panels are built in the same factory but to differents specs.

The real difference between the 2 is the image processing in the background.
