when's the price going to drop then?
I'll have one as soon as the price comes down (or if GT5 was released)

mart360 25 March 2007 05:12 PM

Will blue - ray win the war?

according to the media....

unfortunatly its the Porn houses who will decide the winner, just as they did with VHS & Betamax

Betamax didnt want there product to be associated with porn, VHS didnt care, as it helped to shift units.....the rest is history....

move to 2007, and Sony are saying they dont want Porn houses releasing pron on blue ray media....... family values et al........

thes rest is ??

Cynic mode on.....

as in a delayed launch in europe? more cost for the controller?

how will it work with six axis? will the launch day games work with rumble controllers....

you have to ask why have Sony only now resolved the patent issue?

and how long before they rumble.... 6 months, a year?

its the small things that make a differance!!!

would love to see Sonys business model for the PS3 campaign

One guy has them on ebay for £299 BiN but they are region 3 and won't take english dvd's or blue ray... He has sold quite a few but one of the main reasons i would buy one would be for blue ray as the Players are like £800+ on there own !

messiah 25 March 2007 05:34 PM

An old statement that - and IIRC that particular comment came from Toshiba - be backers of HD DVD.

You'll know when either Blu-Ray or HD DVD is winning by one of 2 events ;

a) Sony launch their movies on HD DVD
b) Universal launch their movies on Blu-Ray.

now, which do you think is more likely?

Simple facts are that BR has more storage and faster transfer rate and is now outselling HD DVD by 3 to 1 (disc sales) and that was before almost a quarter of a million players went on sale to Europe 2 days ago.

HD DVD has missed the boat, and the main reason I didnt get one is that I dont trust the 360 to work long enough to watch a film without it screwing up.

Again, Mart, you seam to be a pub expert on these matters, I'm sure you've resolved many $150m global patent cases.

Point is, it's resolved, they will be bringing rumble to market, and the existing games can be 'patched' as with 360 to update, if needed.

Prasius 25 March 2007 06:16 PM

HD-DVD Vs. Blu-ray.

When Woolworths and Tesco's start stocking one of them - I'll buy that one ;)

(says the person who labeled DVD's a 'fad' that would go the same way as VCD's!! :D - I'm great me.. lol)

KiwiGTI 25 March 2007 07:16 PM

I'm sure standard DVDs will be around for at least 10 more years, so no hurry to upgrade.

Dont go to the pub :p and i take it you were instrumental in the resolution then ?

Given that the rumble feature was one of the main point of the PS range, its ommision was ihmo a big minus point..

lighten up Ed, or have you got big bucks invested in Sony, and they might not come to fruition (sp)??

I'm on the fence regarding rumble, as it flares up my RSI :D

I can see how people miss it though, the metal gear solid example was a genius gaming moment.

evogt 25 March 2007 10:04 PM

I will get a PS3 at Argos when you can get it for £69.99 LOl.

Edcase 25 March 2007 10:08 PM

2017 then :thumb:

At least there will be a great choice of games :D

Agreed:D:D how many people went wow when they saw it for the first time...

its one of "the" interactive elements that can really enhance a game

im just glad that sony knocked the launch back and got plenty of stock :luxhello: because the tw*ts  that ordered 2+ so they can put them on e-bay for a £1000 will now be shafted and stuck with them.:lol1:

Edcase 25 March 2007 10:56 PM

LOL - yes, that is a saving grace :D

Well, I wasn't going to buy one until they dropped in price - so didn't preorder.

However, having been off sick for a while, and was looking for a birthday treat for myself, I bought one over the weekend with 5 games, extra controller and blueray remote. I'm actually very impressed with the PS3, Motorstorm (game) really sells the console for me.

However, what with the Wii, 360 and Mac Mini, I'm running out of room and connections on the back of my TV! :D

Sounds like all you need now is one of those vibrating lazy boy chairs with the beer chilling arm rests :D

Ed,
Don't get over defensive..... it's only a games console! :D :D

My previous question was literally for your view point and nothing more.... but the question still stands, that worldwide the month on month sales of the PS3 (after initial launch) in USA and JPN are reported to be very poor (especially in the USA against the 360).

This could be a revisit of the old Nintendo and Sega days perhaps, where the PS3 may totally dominate the Asia market (but the Wii seems to be doing that lol) and the 360 dominates the USA and EU market?!?

It's obviously too early to tell, but the image of a certain company has taken a right beating over the past 12 months and recent "issues" certainly won't help it unfortunately.

Personally.... I am just happy I have something to play VF5 with! :D

Funny you should say that - I need some new chairs in the front room :)

Also looking at a new LCD TV now, 40" Sony because it's got loads of connections on the back - just enough for what I need :)

Webbie,

Appreciate it may look overly defensive but I'm just trying to balance some of the overly-negative or factually incorrect statements on here. I've seen almost no positive remarks from anyone, especially from those who wear their Gamertags on their sleeves ;)

Indeed, the sales in other territories have not been stellar, but the reality is the price is high, there aren't enough killer apps, there is a new kid on the block wearing the latest trendy trainers and, as the no.1 in the market and as the single largest new consumer entertainment product launch in history, there is a huge focus on them, and naturally as no.1 there will be more than the usual share of detractors. It's the same for any leader of any market, expect that the first 10m adopters of a new videogame platform make the noise of 20m, which is fairly unique to games.

In 2 years time, people will look back and say 'I always knew Sony knew what they were doing.' Mark my words.

What's there to be positive about at the moment? Sure it's quite a nice machine, but where are the games? If there was a decent selection available today, I'd already have one. However, there isn't, (and there's nothong in the near future either) so that made the decision for me.

I've bought an indecent number of consoles and home computers over the last 20 years or so (from the Acetronic / Atari 2600 through to the 360), mostly on day of release. The ps3 is the first one I haven't felt the urge to spend any money on (so far ;)). It's got nothing to do with brand loyalty. I just like playing games. I don't care about the platform as long as the game is good, (it's one of the main reasons I'm always broke :D)

It's certainly going to be an interesting couple of years, and healthy competition between the brands can only be good for us gamers (especially the ones who have both. Must...resist... :))
