M&S have always had a good reputation for class food. We will be getting one here in my home town soon and we are looking forward to it.
I don't see any point in worrying about the class of people who shop there. What the hell does that matter. The worst you can expect is to have to stand behind a middle to upper class person at the till and after all we all have an equal right to shop there. It doesn't rub off you know! Les :) |

Went in today and guess what, bought their sandwiches, does anyone else rate them above the usual prepacked others.

Its more expensive than standard supermarket stuff but not than the posh ranges , but it is always spot on. I get the impression that a lot of food companys make stuff to a recipe and rarely taste it themselves yet M and S actually get someone to eat it. It annoys me as its so bloody Middle Class and smug shopping at M and S, I am not Socialist but it makes me queasy shopping there among the ranks of women in X5's and RR Sports that appear to have sod all better to do than spend all day in the place. Firstly I agree that M&S food does taste the business, but most of the gear comes from the same places as your other stores! When I was 16 I worked for a week or so temping in some egg company. Basically they made every food product you could imagine with egg in it and they supplied the food to M&S, tesco, sainsburys, etc. It was all the same stuff - just a different label!

I don't base my opinions on other people's and I don't jump on bandwagons so that I can post with an opinion. In my opinion, it is pretentious. One of my main reasons for saying this is that it is overpriced. Mark up on simple items is such to uphold the 'pretense' of quality that M&S foods has over other suppliers, when in fact it is of similar quality (pre packed food excluded) I know of people who also make a big thing of being able to shop exclusively at M&S (yes I know, so what), again pointing to the pretension of M&S being somewhat superior to all other shops. |

Agree that it's stupid feeling out of place in a supermarket.
The best thing about M & S is their new service station outlets. Very convenient if you want some proper food on the road. |
Waitrose and M&S rule. tescos just take the pee out from the chav customers who dont need to know Any better. Tescos couldnt give a FKuC what they sell or whats sprayed on it. I find that the difference isnt much from Tescos to Waitrose. less than £2-3 a week. The fruit and meat are far superior. Also the staff. Ever seen a M&S manager? smart and very prof. Tescos !! fat gimp in a sweater with dandruff and acne.

TBH I had a convo about this last night. M&S are indeed very good in food, but not what they used to be, IMHO they've slipped a little. When the food section was smaller with less products you could pretty much guarantee anything you had would be ace, but theres been a few times lately I've been underwhelmed with what I've had from there.
On the whole though far better than the others :) |

In out M & S the food department is taking over the clothing department, and its gone all trendy by selling newspaper & heat magazine by the sandwich fridges.
I have to disagree with the comment about the staff - yes the management are very well dress etc, but some of the xmas temps they had were proper chav's with lots of bling. But you can't beat Waitrose for selection, and their fresh bread hmmn |

I still think M&S has the edge over Waitrose. Either way they're both great food retailers, better than ANYTHING i've ever experienced on the continent, anywhere, and one of life's pleasures. Pretentious my arse.

Interestingly, I was on a course last year with the National Account Manager for one of the larger meat wholesalers and he was telling me that M&S/Waitrose essentially have the same quality standards and insist on the same cuts, whereas Sainsbury's requirements were a little lower.
We use Waitrose and occasionally buy meat there but luckily we have one of the best butchers in England in our village so the bar is set high. The only downer with Waitrose is that its in Horley, which is full of peasants. |
I used to work at M+S and their standards of storing it etc are nothing like the supermarkets. They don't keep stuff for weeks in the warehouse then bring it out about 2 days before it goes off like Sainsburys do:freak3:
