the way i did my detarlarm is put the led's behind the clock its self. i put this on a switch so its not always on too:D

dabow 09 January 2007 07:01 PM

the reason why i've put a switch on the thing, is that the detarlarms are always on. even when the engine is off.

http://i87.photobucket.com/albums/k1...2006/clock.jpg

this is the first atempt at doing this. its know more straiter.

dabow 09 January 2007 07:08 PM

That was my first attempt. Its very flimsy plastic. One layer of clear & the other very thin layer of black, if you go to fast the plastic just cracks, go to slow the drills every where.

its alot neeter know anyways:razz:

Just take cover off box and mount upside down in binacle..

This HAS to be the easiest/neatest method IMHO..! There's no problem seeing the LED's light up (even at the angle) and if you use the KL box as a template your holes will be aligned/spaced correctly..:D

A good strip of gaffer tape is all that's needed to hold the circuit board in place on the inside of the binnacle. Has to be the only method that looks OEM..;)

Yeah RIGHT - some experts on here say that if you see a RED light you are too late!!

It is effectively useless .... the noise from the Engine will tell me that it is destroyed - don't need no poxy LED telling me!

The ECU can react MUCH faster to DET than you can - and it retards the engine ..... you have to see the red light, register it, put your foot into gear and then lift off throttle (please note that you have NOT retarded the ignition just hopefully taken it off boost!).

It's also adjusted so that you dont get a RED light upon installation - it has to be so nulled that its worthless.

It's true worth is in bragging rights down at MacDonalds on a Friday night - it will well impress the chavs and 14 year old girls ..... if you want your street cred to increase with the youths then DO IT.

You will look a right prick to those who know - but, that might not matter to you?

The Detalarm cannot be adjusted. It is fixed at the same sensitivity as a Knocklink on max. sensitivity.

Yes the ECU does retard the ignition. But still (and IMO), it is nice to know that if you keep putting your foot down in 4th at 5000rpm when using BP then in my car anyway I'll get a red light every time. I now know not to do this in my car until I fill up with Tesco or Shell. I'm sure this is a charactersitic specific to my car and not likley to be the same as other cars. But still I'm a happy bunny as I know what my car does and doesn't like.

I've never bragged about it. It's just a box with a few LEDs in it :)

btw - this is mine installed just under the car radio.

like some have said, if you go hard then you will see the red led on these things. but if your just cruising & it comes on, then you know something is wrong. its good to have even the slightest warning.

yes i can see the funny side to what pslewis said, but at others exspence.
bottom line. these little devices are a good idea, specially with inport models

What a load of s**t, if its useless then why do cars have oem knock sensors fitted and linked to the ECU? Answer to save the engine if knock is detected. The bottom line is that if you have the knocklink set up correctly it gives you a fighting chance of saving the engine if for whatever reason your ECU cannot act (failed knock sensor, inability to adjust the timing, simply too much boost). PS is just another socialist idiot who is only happy if everybody conforms with what he says, he's like a broken ipod stuck on repeat mode of a engelbert humperdinck track.

Listen to the people who actually tune cars properly on here (not me) and if you want to add something to your car then do it, you paid for it and your the one who gets to drive and enjoy it.

Last pic is the location of the sensor

Edited to sort out the pics

Detalarm is not much bigger than this all-in.

MisterAdam 12 January 2007 11:18 AM

Could someone recommend where i can get one of these, and how much i'd be looking at paying for one?

Anything to warn of something wrong in the engine is worth having IMO.

Tidgy 12 January 2007 11:19 AM

can get em all over mate, which part of the country are you?

MisterAdam 12 January 2007 11:24 AM

Merseyside/Wirral way mate, i'd like one of those ones in the small box like on one of the previous posts, are they set to a specific sensitivity? Do the get the problem of picking up engine noise as well as knock? Sorry for all the newbie questions :Whatever_

Tidgy 12 January 2007 11:26 AM

nee probs, not sure who the nearest specialist is. they do need adjusting acording to normal engine noise, so best to have it fitted and set up by a specialist. someone wanna help me out with one in his area?

James Neill 12 January 2007 11:28 AM

Roojai (the guys a few posts above) makes the DetAlarm. PM him. He also sells on eBay

eBay Seller: roojai: Car Tuning Styling, Cars, Parts Vehicles items on eBay.co.uk

MisterAdam 12 January 2007 11:31 AM

Thanks very much :)

I wont be going mad with the mod's on the engine, but would be nice to get some indication of how the engine's doing so one of these will be nice, will probly get oil pressure + temp as well as a boost gauge to make sure all is in order :)

I know of a Subaru specialist in the area but i've heard some bad things about them :Suspiciou

Just turn it to maximum sensistivity, you should only see one or two green at max revs if everything else is a ok

Would oil level affect knocklink activity?

BP Ultimate seems to give me an extra green when using the loud pedal compared to Shell. Maybe the ECU needs a couple of tanks to adjust slightly??
