Yes there is (at least in some States).

When I lived there, I had the satisfaction of shooting a mugger who was attacking an old lady, so to answer the OP's question, I would if I had a gun with me...

I've stepped in to stop a woman getting hit. Didn't hurt anyone, just used intimidation.

A mugging maybe, but anything else and you don't know the background or who's round the corner (i.e loads of the guys mates!!).

The guy getting a kicking could well deserve it....

Plus what if you wade in a do major damage?

I certainly would , hoping I could get the first clout in with my arm crutch. I would have to hit him very hard to slow him down of course.
