Obviously i know just doing 30 press ups aint going to make you strong but in relation to doing any sort of exercise whats better a set number of repetitions or as many you can in a set amount of time so that fitter you get etc more repetitions you can do in that amount of time.

Have you ever tried doing holding press ups

Start at the top, go down an inch or so & hold, then down another inch & hold etc., then reverse

Also try tricep dips - two chairs, feet on one, hands on the other - shuffle your arse forward just off the chair with your hands on & dip using your hands to lower & higher you
