Yes there are. However, if you have koi, they tend to eat them as soon as possible (in most ponds anyway). Furthermore, like any other plant, they consume oxygen during the night. And you need a lot of them to be able to take away all nutrients for the algae.

Koi ponds can have plants & oxygenators, but generally they are put into a stream of some kind, or in a fenced off part of the pond.

Something that grows very well (and is wonderful on a sandwich) is watercress BTW.

I do have a stream with plants after my filter, and funnily enough if I do suffer string algae, it's around the roots of these plants.

I forgot to mention 2 "hightech" solutions for keeping your pond clean BTW. Foam fractioners, also called protein skimmers, (which can be DIY) help lifting out small particles and proteins (example : http://www.koicarp.org.uk/fraction.htm ). David, are you any good at DIY ?

Another solution (which is not customer friendly yet, and sometimes downright dangerous) is using ozone generators. But I would not recommend them yet.

Hi, our last pond had plenty of well established plants and in fact I had to remove barrow loads of one of the plants whose name escapes me in the summer. But the water was never crystal clear and for our present pond we keep to just some marginals in baskets. I did buy a dozen or so oxygenators and threw these in - they lasted about a day - the Koi loved 'em!!

Pleased to say pond is now gradually getting clearer and fish seem happy which is always my main guide. Green water does seem to have reduced blanket weed production and it has been cooler here. david
