Steve ,I accept that the evo is a better car than the scoob ,it brakes better , turns in sharper and understeers less than the scoob. But to me the difference is not great enough to warrant the price premium over the scoob. Ilove the look of the evo, but at the end of the day i had two very similar cars, so i decided to change to something different. I think the scoob is 95% of the evo at 70% of the price. Iwould have loved to have been able to have the evo and elise but im not complaining about only having a scoob and an elise Regards Andy

Has anyone ever successfully resolved one of these threads?

I have to laugh at the thought of an EVO VI being a Q car though!

Doesn't have enough doors anyway.

PS - Cem, take us for a spin at the next track day pleeez - I've been dying for a go in one!!

Stef 13 September 2000 10:06 PM

OK, let's put it this way.
Spend £22K on a UK Turbo.
Add £1500 for AP's.
Add £500 for Unichip.
Add £500 for exhaust/filter
Add £250 for suspension mods; springs, bump steer, etc.
Ermmmmm.....that should about do it.
And what have you now got?
A Scoob that out-accelerates, out-brakes, out-sounds (?) and outs-everything the EVO VI!
And with £5K left to buy lots of track days and stuff like that!
Hmmmm.....tough choice. http://bbs.scoobynet.co.uk/biggrin.gif

Stef.

Having been driven around in an Evo IV and owning a UK MY99 I can say that if you want speed then go for an Evo, jesus they are quick http://bbs.scoobynet.co.uk/biggrin.gif . But if you want a car with a soul then go for the Scooby.

Oh and anyway the Evo sounds boring compared to a Scooby http://bbs.scoobynet.co.uk/biggrin.gif

Steve:
Jeremy.......as put by this months EVO mag at croft "Its not a car for someone who likes to drive within a car's grip, The Evo was meant to slide".
You either like it or you don't.

The fact that the Evo is meant to slide is not the point. A sliding car is fine. Its how a car first telegraphs its intentions, how progressively it does slide, and how able it is to maintain a straight-ahead position that would seem to be the more important ability for fast road driving. No?
I would immagine that most Evo owners take a certain about of pride that their cars handle in a superior (ie more overall competent way) than most all other Impreza's. They have more grip more of the time, have less understeer, better body control and composure over demanding roads: yes to all the above. And indeed these abilities should be hailed as what makes the Evo 6 the best ground coving machine of all time. But I beleieve the Impreza also needs its due. Praise due, for communicating more lucidly than the Evo more of the time, about its level of grip to the road, its attitude coming into and out of corners, and the simpler inputs required of its driver to get the car back in line once slipping.
Indeed the fellows over at Evo felt this when comparing the RB-5 and Evo 6rs last year.

Indeed it would be interesting to arrange for several drivers on this site to get together on choosen roads, and swap cars. Maybe an article for True-Grip or something? Drive the cars back-to-back over several weekends and decide for yourselves what are the plus's and minus's of each car for specific roads, conditions and drivers. It seems this has been a question looming for far too long now, and track days may not provide the correct venue in which to decide these on-road driving questions. (mind you I do not speak of driving like hooligans or daredevels, just fast road driving in desparte conditions with competent drivers)

I don't care, I have a Scooby, well chuffed with it, don't want an Evo. Come on guys, lets quit with the this cars better than a Scooby and that car beats a Scooby. Horses for courses.

As Mitsi don't have a direct rival for a normal Scoob, leave the P1 to battle! with the Evo 6.

As Baloo the great bear said 'Let's get with the Boxer beat' enjoy what you have and be thankfull for it.

Chill.

Steve,

I am sure Stef can find a car like that with those exact mods http://bbs.scoobynet.co.uk/wink.gif.

I hope the EVO's quick I seem to remember Stef running the quarter in 13.3 and 0-60 in 4.5.

I may be wrong though

I have even considered an EVO because of the looks of the new Impreza. I dont really want an EVO (I do have EVO experience Cem :P ) but I do like the looks and handling they have. In fact, Im a bit lost as to what to buy next! Type R of Legacy RSK probably http://bbs.scoobynet.co.uk/smile.gif

Anyone knows how the new STI 7 (I guess),
in drive.com.au they spoke to a Subaru spokesman who said the new STI is goin to have an amazing tourqe, and in Japanese form 280hp but for other markets (OZ, NZ and maybe UK) over 300hp, forget the headlamps this car sounds cool.

MorayMackenzie 14 September 2000 11:30 AM

Steve Saunders,

I would be interested to know what sort of 0-60 times you have posted in your awesome beasty... It may give us scooby owners an idea of how much better the evo really is in a straight line.

Also, how much did the car cost and how much was the Stage one performance pach thingy you had fitted?

Bajie 14 September 2000 03:30 PM

Why oh why can't we all just get along ...
Own a Scooby.
Driven an Evo.
The thing I notice most is :
If you are the type of person who will change
the car after a year or two, buy the Evo.
Anyone sold their scoob after modding it and got anywhere near what they paid. Ha!

Craig H 14 September 2000 04:01 PM

Steve,
Would be interested like Moray. I've got an STi V with similar mods (soon) to yours.
Would be fairly interesting.....

Steve Saunders 14 September 2000 05:13 PM

I have never tried a 0-60 test but I have been followed many a time by STI's of all varients down the twisty (and not so twisty) Shropshire lanes and have not found one yet that was difficult to leave behind.
My Evo6 is one year old and cost me £27500 plus £3250 for the Stage1 pack.

Craig, It would be a pleasure.......... http://bbs.scoobynet.co.uk/biggrin.gif

PAUL GEE 14 September 2000 06:03 PM

Steve Saunders,
My cars are also serviced and looked after by Ralliart in Dudley. One is an Evo 6 but the other is a big fat Sonic Blue Subaru which has been modified in a similar way to your Evo. The Evo is a fantastic car I totally agree, but before you totally dismiss Subarus as a real competitor to your beloved machine ask Tony or Colin if this particular ass would be kicked by your Evo.
Personally I luv em both..........

NITO 14 September 2000 06:07 PM

Hi Guys,

I have a fairly heavily modded scooby 5 door and I took out the Evo 6 just a few weeks ago.

To be honest, it was a total surprise and nothing like I expected. All the magazine reports I had read on the car suggested many things that I just didn't agree with.

The Ride. According to the mags it's much harsher than the scoob. My initial impression getting into the Evo was how refined everything was. So much for the animal that all the mags say it is. It felt twice as smooth as the Impreza. The clutch was lighter, the gearchange was lighter the brakes embarassed the scoobs completely especially for feel and my scoob is equipped with 330mm AP's and all round braided hoses.

I found the ride smoother than the Subaru although once more, mine has the Prodrive suspension package. However, it simply did not feel as quick as the Subaru or as manic going through the gears (ironically the opposite of waht all the mags say) although this may have been to do with the exhaust on my car, but I certainly didn't reach speeds any higher than I could in my car on the same road. As for the steering feel, yes, the turn in is quite good compared to the scoob but there is still not much feel and it's probably even lighter steering than the Subaru. The handling was suberb though.

As others have commented, it just hasn't got the character of the scoob and is sterile at best. Didn't get my emotions rushing. Getting back in the scoob was fantastic and settled in my mind for good that I prefer the Subaru any day. The noise, when you change gear, there is a mechanical feel to it, everything feels mechanical in an analogue sort of way (if this makes sense) while the Evo is the digital!!! Oh, and the engine sounds wheezy and **** on the evo too IMHO!!! Plus the interior dash is ugly even if it is more hard wearing!

The only things that were imbedded in my mind after the test drive were the Evos fantastic brakes and handling. But as far as the ownership experience goes....the cult status and following of the Impreza will never be replicated by the evo simply because the evo doesn't touch the scoob for character!!!

Just my two pennies worth
Nito

elondan 14 September 2000 07:02 PM

I own a GT and never driven an EVO, the one thing I don't understand is Steve says he leaves for dead any Impreza (STIs included),
Stef says that with a few mods the Impreza is just as good,
I guess the only way would for Stef and Steve race each other and report back as for the resaults.

Stef 14 September 2000 07:36 PM

Steve.
Straight line stuff is really quite boring, especially in Scoobs and EVO's, but what's your best run at The Pod then?
I understand EVO VI's are capable of getting under 13 secs for the quarter.
My best to date is 13.23secs but that's without the UNICHIP (ie 236bhp), which will be fitted very soon. A car like Morays should be capable of near 12's (if he ever wanted it to! http://bbs.scoobynet.co.uk/wink.gif ).
Next year then, you're on! In the interests of EVO/Scoob relations of course. http://bbs.scoobynet.co.uk/smile.gif

Stef.

I'm not trying to cause a riot here and welcome all subjective views but I have owned and driven Imprezas (UK STI 4,5,6's and a 22B, It's just that when I first drove my EVO it was a totally different experience.
I immediately was at one with the car and felt that most aspects were superior to the Scoobs. Yes, I have had a few run-in's with STI's but i'm prepared to concede that not everyone knows how to drive their car properly.
Nevertheless, some of them must have been decent drivers! , I still love the Scooby but now feel that i've found something that does nearly everything better and just feels right.

I'm up for it if Stef is. http://bbs.scoobynet.co.uk/biggrin.gif

Steve Saunders 14 September 2000 08:08 PM

12.9 at 108 mph before the mods, Haven't tried since http://bbs.scoobynet.co.uk/tongue.gif

Mr Leigh 15 September 2000 12:33 AM

I will road race you anytime http://bbs.scoobynet.co.uk/biggrin.gif I promise you will want to get out of my way.

Craig H 15 September 2000 08:42 AM

Steve,
That's what I normally find - they just get left behind http://bbs.scoobynet.co.uk/wink.gif

Hmmm, 1/4 time same as me. Although that was 2 up in the wet http://bbs.scoobynet.co.uk/tongue.gif

Next year I think I may be up for it. Your mods are a "little" cheaper, you lucky bstrd.

But it will be interesting...
