you can only get 6ch with a DVD. or on slected films with a sky plus box...and then its 5.1, so actually 5 channel.

For DVD..
DTS 6.1 Discreet is a true 6 channel format. DTS 6.1 Matrix and Doby Digital EX are 6 channel but the centre back channel is derived using the same technolgy as the centre front channel on pro-logic. Very few films go down the DTS 6.1 discreet rount but more and more films are coming with DD EX.

For other two channel sources....
DTS NEO 6 and Dolby Pro-logic 11x produce full bandwith six chanel surround sound from the pro-logic mix.

Yeh but Pro-Logic itself is only derived from two channels, depends on the hardware and software whether you get 2,3,4,5 or 6 channels from the encoded information. :)

I personally don't get on with all the sound field virtual stuff that most AV amps now come with. Prologic 2 was a decent step up from prologic with the full bandwith rears but prologic 11x tends to concentrate all rear info in the centre back channel which is not what you want most of the time.

DD EX and DTS Matrix on the other hand is a big step up from basic 5.1, some of the steering effects on Phantom Menance and Attack of the clones are very clever.
Just wish they would bring more stuff out in DTS 6.1 discreet.
