Removal of Labour still leaves Tory & Lib Dem pretty much everywhere and various others scattered about. It just changes it to a different 2 horse race :D

Just illustrating the point (admittedly badly - working at the same time as typing this so not really concentrating on what I was writing ;)), that whilst some people obviously do move to where the work is, others do not have the same luxury. All the people I know who have done this, have moved into relatively highly paid jobs and so could afford to move. This is not the case with unskilled labour, (which is what was being talked about).


A very good question. Where? If there is no work within the local area, and you cannot afford to move or commute, what do you do other than just claim benefits. This is excatly why there is a great need for regeneration and investment in large areas of this country. Whether it happens or not is another matter....

I live in Swindon and commute to work in Newbury, so those are the examples freshest in my mind. House prices in Marlborough, Devizes, Cirencester, Burford (all similar distances from Swindon), are also higher than in Swindon.

I'm not saying that house pricess cannot be the same 20 miles down the road, and people cannot commute to work. I'm just saying that you cannot expect this to be the case. People on here seem to think that the same circumstances and solutions should apply to every location and person in country when it is obvious (if you apply a little common sense) it cannot work like that.

Err the answer to the question was Nottingham rather than Leicester as the house prices are comparable (assuming you are buying anyway).

And conversely you can't blanket state that people can't move either, which seemed to be your earlier implication. In the Midlands there are plenty of towns in close proximity. House prices do vary but communication links are not too bad. So in the Midlands I'd be expecting people to make an effort to move. If you live in Aberdeen, your options are obviously far fewer.

Ah, I mis-read your question. Yes, you'd go to Nottingham. Unless of course everyone from Derby had already gone to Nottingham and already taken those jobs. In which case, you'd be stuck...


Exactly my point Olly. I was just replying to earlier posts by other people that stated that if you want a job, move. Sometimes it is that easy, and sometimes it is not. You cannot tar everyone with the same brush and expect everyone to have the same circumstances, opportunites etc....
