tax exemptness is 1st january 1973

I'd get a more modern, sub 1500cc engined car to qualify for cheaper road tax, but still take the advantage of better fuel economy that more modern engines benefit from.

Clett 11 March 2005 07:11 PM

What's a Honda Insight? You can see here. However, you'll not pick one up for less than £5k and even then people aren't selling them. Combined mpg is 83, but you'll only really save money if you're commuting into London - it (and the Prius) is exempt from congestion charging, potentially saving some people £1,000s per year. But otherwise, a pricey buy.

Fuzz 11 March 2005 07:19 PM

Yep, daft idea, I just went to the car fuel data site and picked the cheapest tax band to see what it came up with.
I was wondering why Autotrader never even listed an Insight. lol

As people say - NISSAN - Micra/Sunny etc etc

I've got a Citroen AX 1.0 for smoking around in. It ticks all the boxes.

EVERYTHING is cheap (parts, servicing, fuel, tyres, tax, group 1 insurance). Its light as a feather, nippy quick, nimble, supple ride yet a great handler too, resistant to rust, reliable, unbelievably comfortable and no-one wants to nick it: I dont even lock it.

The best thing? Really good ones are around £400.

To me, 106's are overweight, bulky and expensive.

calder 11 March 2005 09:18 PM

BMW E30 316 or 318? probably just a few hundred quid to buy a late 80's car, plenty with sound bodywork and easy to work on.
and a bit of rwd fun too.

!!!!

Have had far more trouble with a nissan than any ford. Generally fords are crap, but the escorts I have had keep on going with minor easy maintenance. Not very well, but they keep on going. Dirt cheap and the parts are much cheaper than Nissan parts.

What about a 205 Turbo Diesel. Quick car and still can get 55 MPG and cheap. Just bought one as a second car to go to and from work. Feels quick.

I've got a 93 1.1 Fiesta(worth @ £500 tops). other than an occasional change of oil it's cost me a set of brake pads in 18months!

It's never missed a beat. Gets ragged from cold, used to tow trailers, never washed and still it flew through it's MOT :notworthy

Tax exempt, £120 a year to insure does 25-30mpg and is great fun, I used it as my daily driver last summer for a while.

Have you considered a 205 Diesel? or Turbo Diesel?

I currently run a 95 M Reg 205 Mardi Gras 1.8 Turbo diesel. It does roughly 350 to 400 miles on a tank of diesel and costs around £30 to fill up. Easy to service and parts from scrap yards or the net are cheap. And it's nippy as well. Seen a few on k plates for around £300 - £600 with around 80K on the clock. Can give the newer cars a shock when you scream past them. Bit of a stealth car.

oops... Just noticed you bought a 106. Oh well good luck with your purchase.

Fuzz 16 May 2005 09:36 PM

yes. this little one. :D

Floyd 18 May 2005 08:15 AM

Its far too good :D Not a patch on my **** box

The first time I hit 500+ on a tank I nearly fell over :thumb: Not quite as good as your consumption though, prolly 50-53mpg but 47mpg if thrashed. I still don't believe those wild claims from super heavy golf TDI's even PD's...
