Done 100 miles on mine and they feel no worse than standard still......got a drive to N Wales tomorrow to end the bedding in.........Like running a new car in..

I fitted EBC Red Ceramics in August last year at approximately 28k miles along with DOT5.1 fluid and braided lines. When I ordered them I specified that they must be "E388" compound, as John Felstead stated on his review, and had to wait a couple of weeks for the seller to get them in. The pad and box both clearly stated E388, so I presume they were the real deal. I've just had my geometry checked before some track action at the weekend and whilst there it was pointed out to me that the pads were looking low. On inspection it was found that there was less than 1k road miles left on them, and track use would have redered them dangerous very quickly. They've been in through winter which is normally lighter on the brakes, and when my useage of the car is lower, and covered just 7k miles :mad: Unfortunately I've left the pads at Scoobyclinic today, but I may be able to get them to put them aside. Would it be feasable to have EBC inspect them to ensure they were the new compound, and possibly offer some explanation as to their rapid wear rate ?

Just to get things clear, if the pads are the latest version - they will have the tapered edges, the brake in surface with the writing on it and NO metal wear indicator clip. I got a front set for a MY99 about six weeks ago and they had a metal wear indicator clip, they had the tapered edges, the adhesive shims and I am 99.9% certain that they did not have the brake in surface.
When I recieved them the box was opened but the pads were fully sealed inside so I thought nothing of it. Anyone any idea what version these are as I bought them thinking they were the latest version.

Mine were in a sealed box labelled E388, the pads inside were sealed in plastic and labelled on the back E388, they have wear indicator clips but no running in coating. IIRC they had chamfered edges. If they were the new compound, then they were probably amongst the 1st as like I said earlier, the retailer made me wait as he had yet to get them in stock. The wear rate I have experienced I would equate with not just old Reds, but the really bad old Greens.

Mine are going back for inspection. Will wait and see what the verdict is. I dont think these are isolated cases as a friend of mine had some fitted at the same time as me (upon my recommendation) and they lasted time/miles than mine.

IMO for road driving OE spec pads and discs make much more sense. Far cheaper than 'uprated stuff' and with no problems with wear rate or cold bite.

Cant re-call any probs with OE pads/discs which seemed to last forever.

Bob, TBH, if you speak to someone like Alyn at Asperformance and ask what he'd recommend for fast road use, he'll probably suggest you stick with the std discs which, as you say, are perfectly good for road use and upgrade the pads to Pagids, or DS2500s. They are more expensive than the std pads, but are significantly better in terms of retardation, pedal feel and pad life, which goes some way to off-setting the higher cost. I'll be upgrading myself soon.

I have been made the very kind offer to evaluate the new Ceramics which I have turned down. I have suggested that I evaluate the new YellowStuff 'R' 1793 compound which are supposed to be far more durable and report my findings on here. Company name tba.
