if you cant look after it, im sure you could find someone taht would, would be a shame to see it put to sleep.

GSB876 19 September 2004 01:30 PM

2 Males would not be a good idea, although if one is more dominent then might be ok i guess??

Usually people own 1 male and 1 female to keep the peace.

Diablo 20 September 2004 09:17 AM

Stuey, the hours you are talking about should be no problem, as long as you can get home for lunch.

You need to get a large strong indoor kennel/crate for him when you are out, until he settles down. Will cost about £100 but well worth it. Make sure its big, though, none of that stuff out of pets at home.

Look on the web for crate training. We used it with our male rottie pup and it was fine. As long as you do it properly, the dogs see the crate as a safe haven. And you can rest easy that he's not destroying your house and or cats when you are out.

Good for reinforcing the house training, although at 4 months he should be ok now.

As for the cats, as long as he knows you are in control and you continually reinforce that he shouldn't chase them you should be fine.

If you get it to work, you will have a fantastically loyal and rewarding dog. If it doesn't, you've saved its life and someone else would be happy to take it on provided its not too old.

You'll need to give it time though.

Most important of all - have you met the dog, and if so, how did it interact with you?

if it was up to me i'd cull all the dogs in the dog homes and introduce a new dog licence of £500.

i'd also ban ppl selling dogs in the free adds, etc and licence breeders.

the reason so many animals are treated like ****e is because they are cheap and easy to get.

the classic situation of someone having an accidental litter and passing those pups on to friends and mates would change if that person got hammered for unlicenced breeding and the buyers had to find £500 each......instead the puppies would get put to sleep and not end up in a RSPCA van because some scum dumps them on the M25.

Tiggs (puppy culler ;))

Make sure you include cats in that new law :

Im going to meet the dog tonight, terrible thing is, its had a "stay of execution" so to speak until I view it. Imagine how **** that makes me feel !!!

From all acounts of people who have seen the dog, its a lovely one, if a little puppylike ie, like a kid on redbull

OllyK 20 September 2004 09:30 AM

Try this for some more info: http://www.dogbreedinfo.com/akita.htm

Thing is, as stated by others, the breed info is just a guide, dogs don't all follow it spot on. Our Rough Collie is certainly not "aloof" or "stand offish" with strangers which most are, ours loves a fuss off anybody - soppy thing.

Diablo 20 September 2004 09:34 AM

It's a young male, they are all hooligans :D so expect it to be madder than a mad thing :)

When you meet it, pay attention to how it acts with you. Are you a plaything (unavoidable at first) but does he settle with you?. Be firm with him, but not harsh.

On the other hand, don't be put off if he is a bit stand offish with you.

And take a couple of (dog) biscuits with you. Being seen as a provider of food straight away is good for bonding.

good luck :)

if its cool then have it...if its not then be in no hesitation to let them put it down. ppl need to get a grip on here, this "ohhhhh, you cant miss this chance" rubbish is why there are so many dumped/stray/neglected dogs.

its not a £10 you found on the floor, its a bloody huge animal in your house for 10 years +........wont be so "unmissable" when it gets left all day, eats your cat and ****es on your DVD player.

are you for real???? what the hell is a proud dog? proud of what.....its a dog, its not like its gonna sit GCSE's.

and if it goes into an unsuitable home how proud will it be of the fact its life is screwed? and loyal???? to what? the cage it spends all its time in while its owner is at work.

the first call is whether the situation is right for any dog...if its not it doesnt matter if this thing is a cross between lassie and the littlesy hobbo...it aint gonna work.

So if this were alittle child and it was ****ting on your dvd player you would put it down right????

Also you are no dog owner as you dont deserve one bro, what is a proud dog you ask - climb over me fence and find out???

Akitas are not normal dogs, they will defend their master until their last breath whereas i'd possibly say someone like yourself would turn and run??? And what does he ask for his life??? a meal a day and a warm place to sleep?? alot to ask i'm sure??

Danbo 21 September 2004 01:32 AM

Why rise to it? This could turn into a really pointless argument. (and knowing scoobynet it will) LOL ;)

GSB876 21 September 2004 01:51 AM

Yep true point there buddy, theres always someone who spoils a decent chat.

Will not reply to any daft remarks Danbo as you say eggs some people on i guess???

Chap who went to see the Akita - how did it go???

Diablo 21 September 2004 08:06 AM

Just ignore Tiggs mate - he believes he knows all about everything and has *issues* :D

I know exactly what you mean about proud and loyal dogs having two rotties :)

Diablo 22 September 2004 09:26 AM

Any news

How did you get on?

Stueyb 22 September 2004 09:35 AM

Hi peeps, well the good news is, the dog has a new home. The bad news is that is not with me because it took one look at the cats and all hell broke loose. Now I dont mind a bit of fur flying but the thought of pontentially coming home to a dead cat with a hole in its chest was too much.

It wasn't put down and the RSPCA collected it. From what the chap was saying because its a pup it should be ok to rehome. The other guy didn't answer his mobile :( so it had to be the RSPCA.

Before anyone comments on this Id just like to say that it wasn't through my fault this happened. I just tried to rehome the poor animal myself.

Diablo 22 September 2004 10:05 AM

Fair points mate :)

You had to give it a go, or you would never have known.

D

GSB876 22 September 2004 01:06 PM

Yep thats an Akita for you matey, for some reason they not like cats or other dogs??

Unless you've had them from the same age, i am gonna get another Akita next year so will be diffecult to introduce them both but one will be a puppy and Zeus will be 3 so lets see what happens.

At least you tried.

Mildly amusing I guess, but then it is only the 4th ;)

DJM 11 January 2005 01:28 PM

Hi all - just been reading some of the points on Akita's and what Gsb876 has said on most points make alot of sense. I have an Akita called Salem and he is just over a year old - I also have another dog called Baja and she is an Elk hound. Akitas can get along fine with cats as long as they are brought up with them and they get on with most other dogs if the other dog is submissive as they are dog dominant. They are also a breed they you have to show that you are boss - otherwise they will make a play to become Alfa male knocking you down to number two in the pack - this usually happens around 10 months to just over a year. They are also brilliant at jumping - don't be fooled by there size - I had to higher my 5ft fence because Salem saw the local German Shep going for a walk and decided to let it know who was the daddy in the street - Luckily I was in the garden at the time so ran out before it kicked off. They are the most loving, protective and loyal breed there is - but they do have a number of issue and you have to be prepared to face them head on
