:D

A darts player will "move" more than a javelinist (javelinist??) during a game.

The argument continues.

do javelin throwers break sweat?

BUT!!! *Anyone* can land a dart in a dartboard (except some wimmin ;) ), but not everybody can throw a javelin 80+ metres!! Now if they had Distance Darts - that would be a sport!! :D

not everyone can finish a game in 9 darts, but some wimmen can throw a javelin 80+ meters (well 70+ meters anyway)

TelBoy 13 August 2004 10:34 AM

No, exactly. That's the difference between a *game* requiring skill and a *sport* requiring exceptional athletic ability (as well as skill, obviously). :)

Darts:

Skil - yes...alot of it.
Competition - yes
Physical exhertion - yes
Mental exhertion - yes
Is it on a sports channel - yes
Can you buy darts in a sports shop - yes

Darts is a sport.

TelBoy 13 August 2004 11:19 AM

Darts:

Skill - yes...alot of it.
Competition - yes
Physical exertion - wouldn't know the meaning of it. Unless drinking is included.
Mental exertion - yes
Is it on a sports channel - yes, but then so is fookin SNOOKER!!
Can you buy darts in a sports shop - yes, but they're pointy and dangerous, ie not toys.

Darts is a game if ever i've seen one.

:)

RichWalk 13 August 2004 11:22 AM

I beleive the expression used in common parlence is 'a game of darts'

You should have watched the worlds. They were physically more exherted than alot of other so called sports!!! I would have really struggled playing for 6 hours under those conditions.

I didn't think it was a sport....then I watched it a few times.

Senior_AP 13 August 2004 12:55 PM

Phil Taylor was named in the top 10 sportsmen of the century!!

'SPORTS'men!!!

darts_aint_sport 13 August 2004 01:06 PM

Wasn't by readers of "Darts Magazine" was it perhaps?

I think most people would be physically exhausted standing still in a sweaty pub for 6 hours, under big spotlamps with a camera aimed at you, with or without throwing darts. Though I hardly consider standing in a pub to be a sport.

Cool. Well, that makes you wrong then "newbie". So, who are you then.....I mean, really who are you, your alter ego??

So, we agree that aspect of it is tiring. Along with competition, skill involved and a prize to win I believe we have the formula for sport.

It was a non darts affiliated group. General sport. They recognised the achievevment of one man winning 11 out of 13 world titles. The man 11 times out of 13 baring in mind he is just a pub fatty....he's made big money and alot of fame by being the absolute BEST out of xx billion people that are on this planet consistently for 13 years.

I'll pay him, and the sport the respect it "now" deserves.

darts_aint_sport 13 August 2004 01:11 PM

If you mean the aspect of standing up for 6 hours, it would certainly hurt your feet yes. Physical exertion, no.

So to sum up, you know nothing about darts at all.

Fair enough.

You can go back to your original user ID now.

Tiggs 13 August 2004 01:49 PM

so...just to check:

darts players love it as a sport and get paid
darts fans love it as a sport and enjoy watching
most other people dont care
and some bloke on a web site changes his name to suggest its not a sport at all.

darts_aint_sport 13 August 2004 01:50 PM

If it was as clear cut as that Tiggs then we wouldn't even be having this discussion.

Tiggs 13 August 2004 01:52 PM

name any implication of it being a sport or not.

darts_aint_sport 13 August 2004 01:55 PM

Name any implication of 90% of the threads on this board.

Harmless passing of time.

We agree on that one....

WENDI B 13 August 2004 06:12 PM

I think more sports should involve being fat, drinking beer and being sweaty! I think Darts is ace, but wish the players were a bit more sh**able!

Senior_AP 14 August 2004 12:16 PM

Thought this one would be a better debate than this. Boo. :(

fast bloke 15 August 2004 12:19 AM

Is diving a sport? hardly requires much effort - just loads of skill
