Ok greasemonkey i agree am i very naughty and should have My bottom smacked (think i did check at least more than once though)Although i do blame the larger washer bottles as this was always a convenient time to check the oil on my old MY99 and happened much more frequently because of the ****e washer bottle capacity on the classic shape :D:D:D:D.

But my point still remains even in my oldest car a 1977 vauxhall chevette never used any where near that amount and i had been lulled into a false sense of security after constant checks on My MY99 revealed narry a drop used.
I would have thought that dealers could take a mental note and warn those with 03 models onwards about the difference from there oldrer cars

Me too....

 Had the same problem at roughly 7,500 miles on t'clock on my MY03. took 1.25L at the time. I check it every time now when I fuel up as per the manual - keeps warranty intact!
I had the same problem on my MG, had it back at the garage for consumption checks, and had it pointed out then that it was my responsibility to check every time it was fuelled!

Same with mine (MY03) - must admit last car (*cough* Vauxhall), I didn't put any oil in for 10 years, other than services.

I was horrified to find no oil on dipstick after about 4000 miles, having not checked since 1000 mile service. Dealer said it is difficult to read the dipstick !! I have found it's all or nothing on the dipstick.

Topped up with Castrol RS (what Southampton dealer uses) about 1 litre. Just checked again and put another 0.5 litre in at 6000 miles.

This issue of where on the dipstick to fill to is a bit confusing. Are we talking a min reading with cold engine? I find I can tell when the oil level is getting low as it feels slightly rough - at mid way up the stick when warm. I have been filling up (when warm) to just under the max mark. My WRX (MY02) uses about a litre every 4,000 miles - it's now nicely run in at 50,000 miles.
