Hi all

It's nice to see the entries starting to pour in now - especially from those who don't normally post on photography threads. Welcome to the club :)

I've just posted my other entry - it's the result of some fun and games with lighting, which is a subject about which I'm trying to learn. Comments (good or bad!) welcome as always :)

Mr Cookie: could you pick a date for the entries to stop and for the voting to begin please? I'd suggest next Monday (15th) to give everyone another weekend but so that we can get the voting complete by Christmas.

Keep the photos rolling in :D

Andy

Mr.Cookie 09 December 2003 08:28 PM

carl 09 December 2003 11:07 PM

What a pity about the lens flare in Sbradley's pic :(
Any chance of another attempt, or a bit of Photoshopping to get rid of it?

Sbradley 09 December 2003 11:35 PM

Hang on carl!

I haven't even got one of my pics up there yet! I'm just hosting for others, and apart from resizing it doesn't feel right for me to start 'adjusting' someone else's work...

SB

carl 10 December 2003 08:49 AM

Sorry, I thought it was yours

BOB.T 10 December 2003 10:14 AM

Carl, is that mine, the one of the road / cars? I kinda like it...it started to rain so I think that a drop of rain, possibly!

springbok 10 December 2003 09:08 PM

We really need a seperate photo forum Mr Webby ;)

ianmiller999 10 December 2003 09:22 PM

Can I ask if anybody knows how to adjust the shutter speed on a Casio QV R4?

Mr.Cookie 10 December 2003 09:42 PM

Ian

So far not found anything for shutter speeds but in your best shots options you have one called fireworks mode, this is the one for trailing lights etc, assuming that's what you want to do :)

Si

Edit to say Fireworks mode opens shutter for a pre defined length of time, is the M on the dial for manual mode

[Edited by Mr.Cookie - 12/10/2003 9:44:10 PM]

Mr.Cookie 10 December 2003 09:46 PM

You can change shutter speed for 1/2000 up to 2 seconds just downloading manual ;)

Mr.Cookie 10 December 2003 10:12 PM

or the fireworks mode :)

Big C 10 December 2003 11:41 PM

Peeps,

I posted something here this morning as I didnt know if I was allowed to put more in here or if it was not "arty" enough ;)

Is there a limit on the number of entries?

Nice pics so far though :) I'm glad I'm not the judge :D

~Jules

Mr.Cookie 11 December 2003 03:33 AM

Hi Judge

I'd Say 2 but deffo no more than 3 entries per person gotta feel for whomever going to judge the first one ;) from then on it'll be one of us as it'll be the winner from previous round, i think that's fairly fair unless anyone has problems with it, obviously this would mean the one who chooses the winner can't pick there own work, but that doesn't stop them posting pics ;)

Cheers
Si
Ps Cracking pics of your scoob :)

Hi Folks

I've was speaking to a mod (waves to ian) last niht and apparenlt si and shaun are very busy so doubt they'll be able to decide the first one, if everyones okay with it i've sorted a pole out here, only one problem i can't seem to sort allowing none registered people to vote :( the other option is we do a post on scoobynet which then gets counted by some one :D

Si
Ps if anyones unhappy about me putting pics there let me know and i'll remove

Mr.Cookie 11 December 2003 08:24 AM

Pps i named a couple of them too ;)

Si
Ps Andy or i think ian is there any chance you can take a photo with your lens cap on shutter speed 30 seconds f2.8 would like to see a noise comparison :)

AndyC_772 11 December 2003 09:17 AM

Can do - although it doesn't matter which f/stop is used if the lens cap is on!

ramdor 11 December 2003 10:30 AM

Hi folks :)

Nice pics... just waiting for the weather so I can take some more. I took the one I put up last night, moon was just glimmering through the clouds - was a bit of a pain because the clouds were moving, any longer exposure and it just turned into a grey mass.

Just a quickie... I have 2 hot pixels on my eos 10d... and was wondering if I should ask for a replacement and test it down at the shop (its only a couple days old). One of the hot pixels is quite bad actually and will need editing out of most pics that have low-ish light.

A 30 second iso 100 doesnt have much noise.. but at 1600 :o

Cheers,

Richie.

IWatkins 12 December 2003 10:48 AM

Couple more posted up. :)

Cheers

ramdor 12 December 2003 11:10 AM

Not yet.. but I seem to be standing up every time I hear a van outside :D

Richie doing his 'anti-rain' dance.

AndyC_772 12 December 2003 11:42 AM

Mr Cookie: the 1D and 10D have VERY different long exposure noise levels. The 10D uses Canon's latest CMOS sensor which is absolutely fantastic for long exposures, with minimal noise levels and only a handful of hot pixels if you're unlucky.

The 1D, on the other hand, uses an off-the-shelf CCD sensor which is crap at long exposures. Not only are noise levels much higher, but there are also thousands of hot pixels. To top it all, the two upper corners turn purple due to the heat generated by the CCD readout amplifiers. (This effect is so bad that 30s @ ISO 3200 actually causes the corner pixels to saturate even in total darkness!)

These effects aren't seen in my entries because the first was only a 0.6 sec exposure (ie. not actually very long), and the second was taken when it was really cold outside which helps a lot. At low ISO settings it takes about 30s for things to turn nasty anyway - but nevertheless I was a bit apprehensive when I heard about the 'night time' theme. I was all ready to shoot my entries on film :)

Andy.
