Here in the UK, the car is affectionately known as Scooby after the cartoon character Scooby Doo, which rhymes with Subaru. The first film reference known is in the 1989 film Always in which Richard Dreyfuss is a Subaru car salesman and his friend John Goodman refers to him as selling Scooby Doos

do I win :D:D:D:D:D

SiW, you got the film right but I wanted the year too

Hail Hail wins :D

In the film, John Goodman asks Dreyfuss how it is going selling Scooby Doos. Dreyfuss replies that they are called Subarus :)

The year was 1989.
