The S13 may have left a N/A MR for dead but not a turbo unless it was fooked.

Best car i ever had and I almost shed a little tear when I let the bitch go:(

Damned expensive to run though, and Toyota rip you off.

In the dry the handling's fantastic - less good (dangerous, in fact) when it's wet if you push it even a little bit. Don't even bother taking it off the drive if there's any snow or ice:D

I had mine pushing out about 280bhp at the fly when running sweet and it was new undies time after a blast.

Not a forgiving car for the inexperienced/crap driver. You have to be on your toes all the time if you drive them fast.

Have to strongly disagree, dorve mine in the snow a couple of times and it's the most fun i ever had.... i even had to overtake the gritter once!!! Don't try this at home kids. It was a B-Road with 1 inch fresh cover btw :)

Muppet.

screechmr2 23 May 2003 08:48 PM

i've got a rev 1 mr2 turbo and must say despite it being my first rwd car i've never spun it or anything and i drive like a **** at times, in the dry trying to lose the arse is very hard, the wet is easy, but then so are all rwd cars.

you can't really compare a 280 impreza p1 which is a special edition, rally special impreza with 6 years more development to a 240 bhp mr2 which came out the end of '93 and was a standard unmodified unfettle production car, that just ain't fair.

i love the way a rwd, mid-engined, 220+bhp car that people say has 'scary' handling is a hairdressers car whereas a scooby with tame and predictable handling is a mans car. basically people are saying that a hairdresser is a braver and more skilful driver than a normal bloke, that only insults the person that writes that, and in that case i want to be a hairdresser not an absolute nonce like those who can only drive tame cars.

can only disagree on the lag part as well, mine has pretty much no lag and starts boosting below 2k rpm with full boost of 17psi at 2.6krpm (upped it) on a standard turbo despite it only being a '91 car.

clickable for the lazy;)

scoobynutta555 23 May 2003 10:00 PM

Screech
performance wise a P1 is basically the same as any sti 2/4 door in a straight line. Ive had an sti and the performance is nearly exactly the same, and the early stis would have been around near enough the same time as the early mr2 turbos.

ustolemyname??stevieturbo 23 May 2003 10:13 PM

Apart from the hairdressers/girls car bit...Ive never been in one that was that quick, but they are ok...
But just wait til it blows up....PMSL
They are about the only car that are worse to work on than.....guess??? A Celica, with the same bloody engine.

WRX_280 23 May 2003 10:20 PM

Am sorry but BHP for BHP, the MR2 *is* the faster car in a straightline. E.g. put a 280BHP MR2 against a P1 and the MR2 is the quicker car.

In the dry they are equally fast if you know how to drive an MR car.

Anonymous bob 23 May 2003 11:45 PM

Bloody hell... thats a rare thing... a non-blinkered scooby owner... At least some peeps don't completely underestimate another cars capabilities!

WRX_280 24 May 2003 12:43 AM

Bob,

i own both a WRX and a Rev 3 Turbo :D. For sheer grunt, the MR2 is the quicker car. For sheer fun, the MR2 is amazing.

People talk about the MR2s having twitchy backends, which they do, but its all part of the fun. Each to their own i guess, but to be honest i prefer the MR2 out of the two. Its has a more involved drive to it. Keeps you on your toes and scares the $hit out of you ;)

Cheers

fatherpierre 24 May 2003 12:46 AM

Nicely encapsulated, wrx!

The most unforgiving car I've ever driven. One little error and you're potentially spinning.

Perhaps the reason why Toyota didn't sell them in Europe.

The 60 to 100 in 3rd was for me, the best bit about driving one.

In response to the post at top of the page "wait till they blow up" - well they don't - its a Toyota. Have heard of very few that ever need engines replaced.

My '93 feels as tight and well constructed as any new car I have been in.

fatherpierre 24 May 2003 01:17 AM

Snap.

As long as they're serviced properly they stand 150000 miles without bother - even the turbo lasts.

My 1st rev2 had 162000 on it when i sold it and it was on its original turbo and still hitting full boost and showing 217bhp at the flywheel without mods.

The engine's a legend for reliability.

scoobynutta555 24 May 2003 03:46 AM

ok , i said STANDARD sti/p1 against a STANDARD mr2 turbo, if u want to push a 280 mr2 against a scoob, fair enough, try my 309 P1 or even more radically tuned imprezas. Im keeping things in perspective

scoobynutta555 24 May 2003 03:51 AM

and i havent even mentioned a wet surface. My ex G/F has an mr2, it was as twitchy as hell, and theres no way it could get power down or go around corners in the wet under power

fatherpierre 24 May 2003 04:08 AM

Who?

No MR2 Turbo or N/A could live with any 4WD Scoobie of the mark or through those famous twities in the wet!

In dry times the MR2 T will match an STI.

My MR2 (RIP) used to pull two car lengths from a stadard P1 to a ton (282bhp) but she's gone now!

I'd say a standard rev3 MR2 is just short of a P1 in straight terms. But give your rev3 a new zorst you'll release 15 bhp to match. And get the C26 turbo with ecu mapping and you're lookimg at 275-290bhp depending on how brave you are in respecr to your head gasket!

fatherpierre 24 May 2003 04:23 AM

As was said earlier, the 3GTSE engine is used by racng Supras at around 600bhp.

They're cvnts to works on but very hard to break!

screechmr2 26 May 2003 12:07 PM

you can't say an early sti came out at the same time as an early mr2 turbo, the mr2 turbo came out in 1989, the sti followed on about 4 or 5 years later.

PRO-DRIVE 26 May 2003 03:54 PM

Truly amazing car, seen one blow the socks of an M3 once (damp conditions) M3 driver was very shocked, couldn't understand how a J reg worth £2K-£3K beat him!
Is it true that if the timing belt goes on these cars you don't suffer major damage?

XT 26 May 2003 03:56 PM

i am seriously tempted to post a photoshoped pic from an MR2 forum(this pic has a scooby in it apart from an MR2), but hell will break loose if i post it :D

MooseRacer 26 May 2003 03:59 PM

Do it :D

philz 26 May 2003 04:05 PM

XT 26 May 2003 04:12 PM

MR2 Turbo is non interference, so if the belt breaks the engine stops, put a new one on and it starts!!

si325i 26 May 2003 05:19 PM

beats M3. Hello. give your self a shake.

See you post worked, get the BMW driver involed.

not that i've got an M3. and MR2 must win in a straight line.

RB5_245 26 May 2003 05:22 PM

Started this because i had a bit of fun in my MR2 the other day, and look! a 3 page thread.... I'm so proud of myself.
