just embarked on my own conversion. busy ripping 1.6 engine out of car. got a complete mi16 405 with mot, fsh 101k miles, but sounds sweet. got a pair of twin 45's to go on £80. also 1.9 rear back axle for 50 notes as my current one is squeaking.

can't wait to get some more done! got a hoist being delivered today to whip both engines out. will get the mi16 out over the w/end.

put billies all round and the pagid grp N brake kit on front. need to replace wishbone bushes, anti roll bar linkage and track rod ends. then she will be nice and tight!

any tips scotsman? i have the conversion instrustions obtained from autofive(i think ??) website.

but practical experience would be useful.

My brothers Pug GTI is white too - looks superb.

Striped out waiting for weld in cage. Already has MASSIVE AP brakes, Mi16 engine currently sat on the workbench downstairs awaiting crank balancing with clutch and flywheel. The engine has brand new internals, liners etc so it should be like new when it goes back together. It will be having a set of Jenvey 45mm throttle bodies and the head is being flow tested and maybe bigger inlet valves (not that there is that much room to make em bigger)

Its a totally rally slag with Compomotive Mo's in white, quickshift, sump guard, peugeot sport oil cooler system etc. Its primary use is for stage rallys - but don't be suprised if you see it upsetting the 4x4 boys on track too.

He also has a mint H plate Renault 5 turbo as his daily driver.

I only watched them taking the 1.6 out (basically raised the front end up very high - undid everything, tied the 1.6 up to the engine crane and lowered it to the ground - then dragged it out from under front skirt).

I wasn't around when they were putting the Mi16 in or connecting it up.

Edited to say that it was a complete car - a 1.6 with 11 months MOT (!). I also got the 309 front end put in as well (for the better 1.9 brakes).

It's an interesting experience wheel spinning in third gear lol :D

have you driven your car in the wet? - futile device i should imagine! i drove the 405 home in the wet after purchase and even with goodyear nct 3's on it, it just wanted to spin!

maybe i am just spoilt by my scooby, but i think i will be limiting use to dry days ;)

i am planning to pull the engine out thru the top - is this possible? i have removed bonnet and rad etc, the reason being is that at present i cannot be arsed to remove the lower strut brace and wishbones etc.

if i have to take it out from the bottom then i guess i will have to pull my finger out and get it done. trouble is all this rain does not inspire as car is outside at mo. i only have the engine hoist over the w/end. therefore not that keen on scrabbling around inpuddles of water where avoidable!

weava - out the bottom seems the be the way a lot of people take them out - but as long as they come out :)

It's pretty wild in the wet - but since it's fwd it's not scary. The good thing with the Mi16 is that it's very drivable below 4k revs and it's only when you keep your foot down that it gets manic (and in SUCH a good way).

what do you reckon to nitrous on top of the conversion?

would this be a silly idea or not? its not gonna be my every day mota so i ain't too worried about running costs etc. i just want to make it into even more of a hooligans mobile ;).

i was thinking a 50 bhp kit would prob be sensible. i have not heard as yet of anyone who has done it. would give it even more mid-range if applied correctly.

just a thought ;)!

i ran the car as a standard 1.6 for two years and had another prior to that for two years also, before the scoob arrived.

just love 205's still - driving a 1.6 is still such a hoot!
as a student i was always hankering for the mi16 conversion, but for obvious finacial reasons could never do it!

as far as i am concerned it is unfinished business!

what turned you on to the 205 and what motas have you had in the past mate?

another thing - in the dry, what is the traction like from standstill, when on max launch? you mention third gear wheel spin, which i was aware they do - but can you apply the power cleanly, without having to back off the throttle toooo much?

what about torque steer, surely this is an issue! dunno if there are mods available to combat such?

and also, what clutch did you use? i was considering black diamond for cheapness, also i will running a 1.6 gear box for max acceleration ;) - dunno if you have a view on this?

nitrous ;) I think you'll enjoy the base Mi16 first - then a couple of months later put your twin carbs on :D

I've not tried a full launch (wet or dry) but traction is pretty good. In first it'll spin of course (not too badly) but second and upwards really pulls away hard.

I'm running the standard 1.6 clutch and gearbox. If I was going to use it as an everyday car then I'd put the 1.9 box in- but the 1.6 keeps the revs up :)

Had a lot of cars over the years (33 now) - last couple were a MY99 Scooby (pretty standard apart from a Tek remap from John Banks) for 2 years and then I had an Alfa 156 for 4 months. Always fancied the 205 for track days and road rallys.

Had a 205 diesel years and years ago (second ever car) and loved it back then. Gti of course is very different :)

I also fancied the thought of a £2k car that wont depreciate and will give me more grin fun than the Scooby.

Weava - if you've only got the hoist for a limited time and you need an extra hand, give me a yell.

It seems silly to pay for it for another weekend when you don't need to.

(Just give me a chance to do the cambelt before the bank holiday)

I hillclimb n' sprint my 205 GTi.

Unfortunately we can't use an Mi16 engine as the class rules state that we can only run a head of the same type and material of the original (hence 8v only)

So last year we underwent a major rebuild with DTA 3d ECU, new lightened, balanced everything. Gas flowed head.

Unfortunately 2 weeks ago this happened....

It wasn't long since it was mapped up at John Nobles. To be honest given all the work we'd had done on the engine they were disappointed with the power output.

One issue we found was that when the engine was rebuilt the pistons were put in 180 degrees out.

The dist is French apparently for Cam Belt, not Distributer which they pointed to. Therefore the cut out for the spark plug and to push the exh gases out were facing the wrong way !

It should be back up and running again this weekend, just in time for another event at Harewood Hillclimb. Hopefully this time with out pistons facing the correct way it should go well again !

well i had my first out in my 205 with a new engine at castle combe on wednesday.

It makes 165bhp from a (not very standard) 8v 1.6 on throttle bodies, and weighs in at 760kg. It was very wet and slippy, and even though i was taking it easy it would spin up in 4th...

Getting my 205 back from having the last few bits and bobs done today - and (hopefully, if it makes it up there) will be at Donington on Monday. Can't wait - and will be signing up for the 750MC stock hatch meet at Silverstone in August - hopefully give me time to get any gremlins ironed out....

Nope not good at all really. End of a rather expensive gas flowed head, and pistons n liners which used to take it to 1950cc.

Copied the porting from the old head to a new one. Back on stock pistons and liners.

As for the condom... well I wouldn't f*ck it with out... and believe me its been well and truely f*cked ;)

NTS, I dunno mate:D The engine originally came out of a 205 LAD in Morecambe had done, then it blew up and was rebuilt locally, Yorkshire. My mate sold it about 5 years ago, I'm not sure where it went then, Scotland sounds a little far!:eek: When it went it was flat white with ordinary GTI wheels on, reg was G81***

Bob, wasn't mine mate, mine started standard and then I went a bit daft with it, believe I got my hands on the last turbo technics kit that was in the country. Went the TT route coz I fancied something different to the Mi16's that most people were driving. It was pretty quick could give a cossie a good run for it's money up to about 120 but then it ran out of gearing, not to bad on the strip either 15.8 on the pod, official figures from TT were 170BHP and 180 lb/ft if I remember correctly, used to crack some wicked flames when out on the track :D:D:D

I think my mates might of had some TT involvement too:D IIRC it was a very similar BHP. It was quite lively too, it would spin up on request:cool::D

Bob, they would spin up really quickly due to them only using a T25 blower, so almost no lag.

got the mi16 lump out and the 1.6 gti lump out over the last couple of days. got the mi16 lump on the work bench now and upon inspection of the cams and buckets, i am pleased to report that every thing is tickety-boo!

no wear at all, which is in keeping with the full pug service history. i am very pleased.

barely needs degreasing it is that clean! got to sort out the 1.6 'box which IS covered in grease.

ordered a timing belt today - very conveniently the young lad helping me with the conversion works for the local pug dealer that is less than 1 mile from my house! ;)

should be able to get bits cheaply via him, or if not from the various other resources to hand, autofive, pugspares et al.

so i am underway :D - got the twin 45's on the way from a local chap (£80 :) ).

off on holiday on friday so every thing is on hold til after,but will keep you guys posted on how it goes :).
