Oh, those were (and somewhat still are) the days.

Nowadays there's loads of strange hardware and different systems around, people from Czech Republic, Russia, and other Eastern Europian places write games and demos too, and the UK has it's scene as well.

There's a newsgorup comp.sys.sinclair, tonnes and tonnes of webpages on all aspects, and still meetings and user groups going on. I have about 5 speccies still - only 2 working properly, a fair bit of hardware (you can get Hard Disc interfaces now, I considered trying to get one at one point). Written a bit of software myself - demos mainly, as in (trying to) show off the effects I could write in assembler.

There are 'clones' - Spectrums with improved hardware but still basically Spectrums, eg. better resolution/colour displays (obviously custom software needed to use them though), and all sorts. I've got an interface to use 3.5" HD disks up to 1.83Mb (better than the normal 1.44Mb PC standard), with DMA (techy term) and you'll find it hard to believe what can actually be accomplished with the 128k Speccy's 3-channel sound chip (how about almost-CD quality sample playback, or half-decent (albeit 80's ish) stereo effects given a bit of playing with the connections inside)

(plug for my speccy website: http://www.breezer.demon.co.uk/spec/)

I heartily recommend the "World of Spectrum" site though, http://www.worldofspectrum.org/ and I've got a webring you can browse around for an idea of what's happening nowadays if you feel like it.

[Edited to correct the old URL for World of Speccy above]
