I still havnt managed to get any sponsorship from Red Bull. :D

Kingsize K2 22 July 2003 07:01 PM

Great read :-) Didn't see who wrote it till after I read it, and didn't realise the date on it till the bottom of page 1  Sport I was thinking  ;)

Sounds like a great drive. I would love to do that drive in my car when the condition's were the same. It sounds like an excellent, challenging drive, which is just what these Scoob's are designed for.

Great write up!

You're lucky you didn't go through Glasgow as I would have had your wheels off. (Just to keep them safe from the Edinburgh junkies)

Kenny(Saxo Boy) and I will vouch for the roads North of Ullapool.
We have both spent many hours driving around that area on our holidays. Never managed to meet up there but he is getting a 6ft ariel for his mobile this year!!

Phone surge looms!!!

Paul_M 22 July 2003 09:13 PM

The thread that refuses to die :D

BOB.T 22 July 2003 11:11 PM

The road has been gritted but on ALL the tight right-hand corners there is no grit at all, very bizarre. Either the gritter driver has a nasty sense of humour or the truck has a fault that starves it of grit on right handers
Grit surge, they all do that sir;):D:D

ace2002 23 July 2003 02:04 AM

Excellent write up! Took me about 20 mins to read, can't imagine how long it took to write! BTW that's nearly 3000 words if you didn't already know!

EvilBevel 23 July 2003 07:29 AM

I don't drink a great deal either, isn't that a prerequisite?
*cough*, you working for Evo yet ? ;) :D :D

spyr0 23 July 2003 08:17 AM

nice write up :)
i did exactly the same route with 2 mates on our fireblades. brilliant - especially the 835 from ullapool to dingwall.
i used to rep that whole area in a sierra cosworth - now that was one feck of a great job

Leslie 23 July 2003 10:26 AM

I really enjoyed reading that John, a bit of an adventure. Couldn't believe the bit about the young girl and the child!

No wonder it is a good car, excellent way to run it in.

Les :)

Treacle 23 July 2003 10:39 AM

Several records there i believe .
1, shortest run in of new engine
2, longest start to a thread ( great to read though)
3, longest running thread (3 years)
Dedeications what you need, if you wanna be a record breaker, oooooh yeahhhhh

Great story...all it needed was..."and they all lived happily ever after" as a closing comment :D :D

A great read John

It reminded me of my time in scotland, may 1998, staying in Kinross went up country on the A9 to Perth and then off the 9 through some glorious country on to what I can only describe as a track into the Cairngorms, back on to the main road up into the mountains., all this in a 325 motorsport conv, on the journey back I saw a lovely DGM MY98 and thought I want one of those!, managed to get my MY 98 in Silver that October and she's still going strong at 116000.

The Scooby will be going soon, young family forces cheaper fuel/insurance/running costs blah blah blah, I always said I'd love to drive those roads again in a Scoob, I have a couple of days leave left and feel inspired to just pop up from London for a two day drive around the Highlands before I let her go and setlle down into Diesel estatedom :(

Cheers

Dave

ian_sadler 24 August 2004 11:55 AM

A thread from the grave lol

Old_Fart 24 August 2004 12:05 PM

Funkii Dave, do it. I've just come back from another week up there in the 22B, 4th time in 5 years I've trekked up from Essex for the driving/touring. Nothing makes making progess easier than a classic jap AWD nuttermobile :D Hell I chose the 22 for this trip over a fat arsed German thing at the back of the garage...they really do suit the roads that much :D
Base yourself in Inverness or Fort William and you will have loads of fantastic circular routes to choose from.

Excellent write up, printed it out as I'm bloody determined to get round the Highlands at some point :D

madfiddler 24 August 2004 04:35 PM

Really interesting read. Thanks for that

Leslie 24 August 2004 04:37 PM

Really enjoyed reading all that, thats the way to run a car in alright.

It brought back a few mixed memories too. Good ones about the low flying through those hills and a bad one about when I hit a big red stag near Clumber Park one night, not much smaller than a cow, and wrote off an old Beemer 528i. Luckily it was a really strong car!

Les :)

Dazza's-STi 24 August 2004 05:01 PM

Done that run several times...

Stunning!!!! thats all i can say...

That's reminded me... time to get the cammera and head for the highlands!

Luvly

Interesting readin John.

Fabulous post John, as a word of note though, there is a 24hour petrol station in Pitlochery just 30 miles north of Perth, and when you are 10 miles south of Ullapool, there is a turning that takes you a 50 mile detour through Aultbea and Gairloch (there is a Nato Refuelling base there as a matter of interest), that are at least as good as the roads north of Ullapool, it's such a pleasure to find someone else that has enjoyed these roads as much as me(my wife's family live in this area and we travel from Glasgow to the North of Scotland at least 6 times per year). Hope you get a chance to visit them again sometime

johnfelstead 25 August 2004 12:18 AM

dear god, who dug this one up. I feel tired just thinking about that trip. :D

Neil Smalley 25 August 2004 06:39 AM

I remember this thread! It was one of the first memorable ones I ever read when I joined. That and the "Stef and Shaun roadshow" one. Anyway, it's great to catch it on the re-run and soak up the atmosphere.

I wonder how much the route has changed in the 4+ years since this post. There are probably Camera vans all over the place, traffic calming measures and no greasy truck stops. I suspect the cost of the trip would also have risen a lot, which makes accounts like this even more special. Enjoy the roads while you can, the brave new world is coming.
