Shaun,

Nice example of a Ford, but that's the problem, it's a FORD!
It will probably be sitting spinning it's wheels on the line when then Scooby's are off over the hill.

TIFF-C20WTH 27 January 2003 07:01 PM

Shaun

Very nice mate, and as Andy and i said at Donno,Get some bigger brakes;):)

Shaun 27 January 2003 07:49 PM

Andy,

Perhaps you would like to look at http://www.trackdayplus.com/ and see how these old knackered cossies got on in 10 OF THE BEST, last year.

TOP SPEED RUN (STANDING START 1.25 MILES)
HIGHEST PLACED COSSIE - 9TH 177 MPH - RWD CAR
HIGHEST PLACED SCOOBY - 24TH 166 MPH - 4WD CAR

BEST 500M SPRINT BY CLUB
HIGHEST PLACED COSSIE - 12.40 @ 129MPH - 4WD CAR
NEXT HIGHEST COSSIE - 13.39 @ 129MPH - RWD CAR

HIGHEST PLACED SCOOBY - 13.45 @ 126MPH - 4WD CAR
NEXT HIGHEST SCOOBY - 13.92 @ 117MPH - 4WD CAR

HANDLING CIRCUIT
FASTEST RWD COSSIE - 38.75 (ONLY HAD ONE GO THOUGH)
FASTEST 4WD COSSIE - 31.84 (MULTIPLE GOES)

FASTEST 4WD SCOOBY - 34.25 (MULTIPLE GOES)

So see, your initial view is not actually as clear cut as was first stated!!! ;)

RWD driven properly is without doubt REAL WHEEL DRIVE, as some professionals say.

On a smooth tarmac track, an excellent RWD driver should beat a 4WD driver..... it all comes down to simple physics. Many assume that powering around a bend is better with a 4WD car, than it is RWD......... NOT the case when the tarmac is smooth. ;)

Regards,
Shaun.

Gedi 28 January 2003 10:35 AM

couldn't have put it better. If you were wrong, Ferraris etc, would be AWD.

If the subaru is ever the icon that the 2dr cossie is, it will have exceeded all expectations...only time will tell, but somehow I think the cossie will provail.

Shaun 28 January 2003 10:55 AM

MTR,

Th running gear on the 2WD's is fairly bullet proof..... to a certain level. The 7 1/2" rear diff is quite capable of handling this type of power, as long as I don't spend hours on end donutting!!! ;) The T5 borg warner box is an absolute gem, and as long as it is treated with respect should not give me any trouble.

The engine has been spec'ed to last and unless I spend all my time in the 6-8k rev band ( - they rev to about 6.5k standard), it should last me for ever.

Everything around the engine (including uprated breather system, swirl pot, oil separator, high pressure header tank, paddle clutch and race spec twin fuel pump system with swirl pot), have all been put on the car to allow it to run reliable on track. All it really needs is a big winged sump.

The major issue I have to address, is the fact it is on standard brakes

The suspension has been uprated will a full koni set-up.

Regards,
Shaun.

MTR 28 January 2003 12:32 PM

Shaun,
As you say, if you don't run it continually at the upper end of the rev range/power output then the engine should last well.

I suppose the bodyshell deterioration that the BTC cars suffered from would be created due to the exceptionally high spring rates they used to run, the fact they would be on very powerful brakes,
and run on slick tyres. All adding up to passing strains onto the bodyshell its not really designed to withstand.

If you run conventional ie road type spec springs and dampers, and road tyres, then it should lessen the likelihood of problems.

One of the members of my motor club used to rally, at international level, a semi works prepared Vauxhall Chevette HSR, with a Gartrag shell. It had to be sent back to Gartrag every 5 events to be re straightened!! It would begin to 'bannana' in the middle.

I believe the David Sutton prepared cars for Vatinen used to scrap their shells after 3 events!!! Unless he wrote them of beforhand.

Obviously circuit/road driving doesn't exert the same sort of pressures as stage rallying, but the concept is similar.

I wouldn't run Bilsteins on my MK1 Mexico simply because it was too old, and they beat the living daylights out of the bodyshell. My inner wings would very quickly start to display signs of wanting to go on holiday on their own, without the rest of the car.

Good luck with the car, and watch out for the tyre barriers, they make a mess. I know.

babber 28 January 2003 08:56 PM

Shaun,

Nice car mate ;) bet when the turbo cuts in she pulls like an express train!! I have an RB5 WR at the mo. and would love an RS500 for my posing car :D

catflap 28 January 2003 09:01 PM

Fanbloodytastic

Look at the shape if it, nice and clean, look after it dude, its gona go updidy up in price as the years tick by.

RWD ROCKS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! my westy gives 330bhp/t and uhem thats lively, i cant even guess what thats like (well i spin the wheels through third lol)

Shaun 29 January 2003 11:04 AM

I always remember all the fun I had, going out in John F's Westy with the Cossie motor in it. Can't remember what that was BHP per ton (as it was 330bhp output)... so if anyone knows the approximate weight, it would be interesting to compare.

:)

Regards,
Shaun.

Vanish 31 January 2003 11:51 PM

Sorry dont rate em been around enough of them to know they belong in the past in a museum.

You will have serious issues on braking back end will go light trying to stop then it will weave all over the road in the meantime you will have an underpowered in comparison awd Subaru driver one hand on the wheel yawning while you sort it out.

Looks good when you get thrown left to right great when it grips if it grips. Gearbox and diff problems if your honest or you spend some money.

Mate picks up his 400bhp escort from SCS next week and has been told not to launch it to often.£7000 and you cant launch it well what can I say.

The times you posted earlier compared to this new age Subaru are nothing.

This carmakes like 740 h.p. at the Fly.Motorsports: Subaru Breaks the 10 Second Barrier on the US Soil.
Last night, Rigoli tuned, Easy Street USDM WRX ran an impressive 10.73 sec @ 135 MPH in the 1/4 mile. Congratulations to all involved in the project. The car features a built 2.2L motor, T-66 Turbonetics turbo, X-shots of NOS and other goodies from the down under. According to our sources, the drivetrain was delivered to Easy Street the night before the race and Rigoli brothers pulled out all the stops and worked all night.

Requires Quicktime to run the footage. Reyland cossie pah gimme the Scooby or a skyline any day.

Take a look a new era dawns stop living in the past.

Nice to see a good example cherish it and be careful on the twisty stuff.

FASTER MIKE!! 01 February 2003 12:03 AM

very nice  and very rare in gray ie only about 10 built in that colour if even that

mike

Shaun 01 February 2003 05:54 PM

Faster Mike,
There was actually just over 50 made (the most special of these special editions).

Vanish,
Like I said......

On a smooth track, an AWD vehicle WILL NOT leave the car standing. If the driver of the RWD car, can really drive..... you will be surprised (or you would'nt if you realised the dynamics and physics of RWD against AWD). I am not saying that my RS500 is quicker than a Scooby, but in certain conditions (as already stated) your infalable Scooby, won't be quite........... so infalable.

I know a certain rally driver, who runs Scoobynet ;) would easily wipe most peoples bums with his 3dr Seirra Rally car. ;)

As regards to your comment concerning the Escort......

Can't see the relevance of stating about the fact that it shouldnt be hoofed around. The weak point on the Escort is the Gearbox... unless you uprate it with straight cut gears it won't handle it. If you think it would be any different for a Scooby pushing out over 400+ bhp and torq, you are very much mistaken.

:)

Regards,
Shaun.

Shaun 01 February 2003 06:02 PM

Also...........

I think the comparison between the Scoobys at the TOTB, with this NASA shuttle from Rigoli, is a tad unfair. I might as well compare mine with a WRC spec Focus.

:)

Anyway.........

I will confer, that putting my car up against a AWD car when there is the slightest hint of moisture............ it's game over for me.!!! ;) Also helps if there isn't a single aton of dirt on the track as well!!! :D

Regards,
Shaun.

ADP 01 February 2003 07:39 PM

lovely car, I dont know much about em I but I can tell when somethings special! and that obviously is

theres always a better driver than you out there though, dont matter how many horses you got - so dont spend too much time looking in your mirror ay ;)

Vanish 02 February 2003 09:48 AM

The title of the post said Scoob slayer. Sorry I misunderstood the heading.
The 3 door looks really nice and they do go well. The only thing I dont like about the grey injectors is the tendancy to overfuel leaving big plumes of smoke or a very long flame if the exhaust is hot enough to ignite the fumes.
Anyway enjoy the car will you be at National day this year? I will be in the pits again if you fancy tracking it.

Shaun 02 February 2003 02:10 PM

ADP,
I agree with you about the driver bit..... I should know, I can't drive a slippery stick up my bum. :D

Vanish,
Unfortunately the over fueling is an effect of having virtual hosepipes for injectors, which is somewhat increased when all 8 injectors are wired up. :D I like the flames actually :D

I should be set for National Day, as i'm still running her in. Come over and say hello, as I don't think there will be many Moonstone RS500's on the track, so you shouldnt miss me.

Regards,
Shaun.

Vanish 02 February 2003 11:46 PM

Will do Shaun be nice to see it on the track most of the lads have or are going down the concourse route this year.

Mellow Yellow ! 03 February 2003 05:32 AM

Erm............

I seem to recall the 2WD Saph Cossie I recently tracked not only wiped the floor with the AWD scoobs and EVO's but lapped them as well (just to add insult to injury ;) )

A well set up 2WD Cossie in the right hands is untouchable....simple as :)

Shaun 03 February 2003 02:46 PM

Chris,
Thanks for confirming that!!! :)

So you just ALL better sell your Scoobys and buy a RWD car!!! :D :D :D :D

P.S. To own a RWD car, YOU MUST learn how to drive (best sell mine then :D)

Regards,
Shaun.

The Zohan 03 February 2003 06:44 PM

Wow - that looks damn fine and from what i can tell a hell of a spec!

Have you still got the Escort Cossie?

perhaps you could take me for a spin next time we meet.

Paul

Rusty Festa 03 February 2003 07:52 PM

What a stunning Moonstone Blue example you have there

I put an RS500 font grill on my old Sierra 2.oiS as I was in awe of these beauties first time around ;)

When I was at the Beaulieu autojumble last summer, there was one for sale for around £7k in the car park - looked mint but over 100k on the clock (not to bad for age)

Did I once read in Fast Ford they made some of the RS500's 4WD?

Jon :D

Shaun 03 February 2003 08:18 PM

Paul,
No sweat mate. :)

Escort has now gone. :(

Rusty,
That must of been a right minger for 7k!!!!! Either that or it must of been a 3dr dressed up to look like a Rs500. Mine cost me over double that, and that was cheap for the car.

Regards,
Shaun.

Shaun 05 February 2003 07:42 PM

I must be mental, as I have just commissioned the work by my tuning company to have her finished off to 500bhp spec!!!

:D
:D
:D
:D

Regards,
Shaun.

wrxrob 08 February 2003 09:46 AM

although i am a avid scooby fan, this takes me back to the days when i used to service these day after day when i worked in a rs dealership,
values are on the rise for this sort of thing but you will get more dosh for a untouched car than a modded example the one you really need to keep an eye out for and you will not see many as there were not many in the first place is the
" saphire rs cosworth rouse sport"only ever made in silver i think how i would love to find one of these.
but all in all who ever makes em respect to scoobs, cossies, evos, etc etc they are all great motors.

johnfelstead 08 February 2003 05:37 PM

very nice shaun! You cant beat high power RWD for FUN! Driving them quickly does take some skill once you get to the levels of hanging them out in the tripple figures speeds, below that speed they are quite easy to powerslide.

The front brakes are quite good on these if you use good quality disks and pads. Most RWD cossies this age have slightly warped front hubs, so if you are getting brake juder when you start pushing it, it wont be the disks, it will be the hubs! You can replace these quite cheaply. Also, it's quite common for the 4 pots up front to sieze on one side, so if the brakes feel wooden get the calipers reconditioned at somewhere like brakes international, rochdale, it's not expensive.

Rear diff, even with the 7 1/2" rear diff you are not going to have a bullit proof setup if you start loading it up to the levels of fast launches or high speed/grip power slides. You will need a 9" rear diff for that. These need a diferent rear beam and are not cheap to buy, although prices have dropped a lot for these in the last 3 years. We have a 9" rear diff on the Escort Cossie rally car. As long as you are sympathetic and not brutal on launches you will be fine, if you start driving like a knob it will fall apart in no time.

My Westie was 475BHP/Tonne.

johnfelstead 08 February 2003 05:39 PM

PS before my scoobs i had one of the last RWD Sapphire cossies to be built, that had 350BHP and was huge fun. I used to eat brake pads in the rear, 2 sets a day on track.

RB5Jezza 09 February 2003 09:56 AM

Now then,

This is my old car, i own an RB5 now but this would run rings round it ;

As long as you are sympathetic and not brutal on launches you will be fine, if you start driving like a knob it will fall apart in no time.
That'll be me then!!! :D :D :D (Guess which bit i'm referring to though!!! :D :D)

Approximate BHP per Ton with latest 500bhp spec = 416bhp.

Regards,
Shaun.

BOB.T 09 February 2003 08:31 PM

Did I see your car at Donno today, in the paddock?

Saw one (yours?) and it looked fantastic:cool:

Bob

Shaun 09 February 2003 11:13 PM

Aye I was at Donno today!
