Before I make excuses let me be clear if you want to go back to standard ECU and have a refund I am quite happy to do that. However, I honestly can't see an issue with the Tek 2.5 map to be honest when it put out 272 BHP on Theo's car at Star (although I agree that RR figures are BS ;) )

Now the excuses ;)

Your car is hitting the correct boost so the Dawes is setup OK.

I keep telling you you need a big turbo. The TD04L is really at its limit here.

The map is standard Tek 2.5 - I did not pull timing out I turned your boost down when you had all the cats to get rid of knock correction. It is by very nature safe, but if you think it is tame compare it to a Tek 2 or PPP ECU.

These are not Cossies or Nissans. You can't get big power increases anywhere near as easily. Some would call it subtle. At the end of the day 40 BHP on a car that is already 200+ BHP is not that dramatic, and hardly noticeable on the road, although from the driver's seat it does feel more impressive than this. You need ***loads*** more power to just whoop someone's ass like you are expecting. Look how close the Saxos are at the end of the 1/4 ;) Look how much work you have to do to remove just 0.25 seconds from a 1/4 time or add 2 mph to a trap speed. The dramatic differences you look for are just not there, and also you soon get used to more power. If I lined my car up against yours from 30 mph and we both gunned it assuming equal driver ability ;) then despite having probably 80 BHP extra I would not expect a dramatic difference. If you then drove my car and I offered you a swap you would bit my hand off.

Heres my 2p explaining how your dawes was connected.

The pressure pipe from the inlet manifold to the fuel pressure regulator had been cut & T pieced into the dawes (pressure side) then a long pipe from the outlet of the dawes to the actuator.
The OE pipe to the boost solenoid valve had been disconected from the actuator & blanked off, but was still connected to the outlet nipple of the turbo.
I was concerned with this set-up as the dawes would be bleeding off pressure needed to control the fuel pressure regulator and could have caused engine damage.

Could your erratic boost guage be leaking or faulty??? worth checking it out.

I agree that the best test of how much quicker your car is after every mod is to drag race it & compare times & terminal speeds.Or buy a good performance meter. In my experience with my MY99, induction kit gave 15bhp but lost about 15-20lb/ft compared to standard airbox & paper element.

Like John said.....BIGGER TURBO :D :D

...I have a pe t75 down pipe and have always had fairly good boost control between peak and held compared to a m8 with a magnex d/p.he fitted a dawes to control his boost better as he was getting peaks 3psi higher than his held and his gauge has this waggling too even with the dawes...
It is mentioned several times in AU-USA forums that downpipe collectors/splitters make a huge difference to the turbo spool-up and boost control, I don't know why European exhaust manufactuers didn't find a reason for embody this mod to their products.
Saxo boy in case you want to keep your original filter/back box due to MAF reasons why you don't try this?
Safe cheap mod and if you use an IC splitter and tilt it wouldn't cost you a fortune!
Just a different opinion.

If I may humbly add my 2 cents worth.

On the comparison of all out acceleration and power I would like to agree with what Dr John Banks has said for the following reason:

My friend just imported here to Trinidad an STI MY02 From Japan.

After driving it last night to collect him from the airport, I have to agree that initial acceleration is better but not THAT MUCH better than my MY00 with a Dawes set to 16.5-17 lbs, ITG filter and Denso IK22 plugs.

However, the car never seems to run out of power like the TDL04 turbo on the MY00. The STI comes on boost at around 3700 RPM but keeps pulling all the way to 8000 red line. Amazing gear box...close ratio only drops around 1200rpm between gears!!A DREAM TO DRIVE!!!

We are going to do some comparisons using a G-TEC PRO to see the 0-60 and 1/4 mile comparisons as well as trap speeds on the track.

So even though there is almost no comparison so to speak between a Jap spec MY02 STI and a Slightly modded MY00 i.e the STI should be much better by the numbers HP etc, I dont think that the actual
G-TEC numbers will be that different, but the car does feel faster.

To feel a great deal more Umphh you really have to go to the 350 hp range.

As in car audio to increase the SPL by 1db(barely audible difference)you have to double the power. Simillarly to feel a BIG difference in power you have to increase the HP by a LOT especially when you are talking about cars that already produce 220ish HP.
Thanks

Kenny

Glad you've had some good imput on this one,I hope this helps you out mate.

I know I've said this till I'm blue in the face BUT you MUST buy new tyres and discs ASAP. You are looking to eeek out a few more bhp here and there but the limitations imposed on your driving enjoyment at the moment are pretty severe with crap tyres and cracked discs.

My advice:)...Forget any more mods and get your self some nice new metal and rubber before these roads get any greasier and icier. As you saw the other night, that what really transforms the impreza (IMHO).

Let me know if you are around Sunday for a filter swap/test....

Cheers

I agree with John on this, my car keeps up very well with a car that made over 280BHP on the rollers. As said before my map is also running very safe.

Try taking the ecu out and return to the stock one, only then will you realise what an improvement the Tek map is :)

LG John 18 October 2002 10:38 AM

Cheers for the responses guys. If anyone understands the way the dawes was previously set up and wishes to comment please do so. IIRC when John and I were teking, my boost gauge was fairly accurate so I don't think thats the problem.

Sipie, I'm ordering disks as we speak and powersliding every roundabout to finish the tyres ;):D

Don't worry John I don't want a refund, I'm very happy with the work you've done to the car and greatly appreciate your time and efforts to help me. Its hard to describe what I thinks wrong. I guess, having been in Chris grants car, theos and Johns many moons ago it just feels like something isn't quite right. All the right bits are there but that little something is missing. Sometimes (and not always in the cold) the car just goes, smooth, powerful acceleration without that dead zone I was on about and it hammers through 100mph with ease - track of course;) This is rare but for whatever reason something on those occassions is just 'right' This morning it was being a moody git under boost on the bypass!!

I appreciate its never going to go like the enterprise and I realise that the turbo is pretty stressed. I have to agree john, it sucks!! I'm secretly hopeful that an ITG might help all the bits gel together a little better and I'm now 95% sure I'm going to offer for the STI V intercooler which should take a little stress from the turbo.

Any more thoughts and comments greatly appreciated :)

I was tempted to look at getting a decat downpipe but I've come to the conclusion that the difference will be there but it wont be that much.

After having a ride in John's car, the only real option I can see is a new turbo. I'm going to wait until I can afford to get it all done together next year.

Currently my UK99 with a Tek 2.5 and decat centre is ideal. Might even put a dawes back on (as it's sitting in the house this now).

Richard.

LG John 18 October 2002 05:18 PM

Decat didn't give any real powergain like I'd sort of expected/hoped for but it does transform the driveability of the car.

All other things being equal, driver, tyres, etc my car would takes sipies through the bends due to the quicker and earlier spool up brought about by the dawes and downpipe. I guess given the size of the cat, I expected to feel an extra 15 horses or so when it was removed.

Saxo Boy

Compressor maps of TD04, APS SR series, VF22, and PE1820

http://www.airpowersystems.com.au/wr..._technical.htm

Have never seen compressor maps for rest of VF series, and this is vendor information

If you want to tune your car a lot a whole STi V5 would be a better base - I've discovered limitations on MY98 UK step by step :-(

LG John 18 October 2002 06:35 PM

Cheers, cool graphs. Makes the TDO4L look a little weedy :)

Car is ready for a passenger
:p

LG John 20 October 2002 05:00 PM

 Will give you a call when I'm back in town....good gains?

LG John 27 October 2002 12:06 AM

Right peeps, now I'm sure she's got more to give. Floored it in 2nd away from a roundabout today and there was some useful force to be had :D Grins all round :) Fuel was low but weight was up (aj ;)) and no signs of overboosting or anything like that. Still got to figure out why it can pull soooo good sometimes but not all the time. I still come back to filtration.

Before you ask, yes the difference was night and day, we were thrust back into our seats :)

Amanda-Jane 27 October 2002 10:55 PM

but weight was up (aj;))
Do you think I made that much of a difference?

AJ

LG John 27 October 2002 11:10 PM

The correct answer: Of course not, no...I can barely notice the difference.

The real answer: Bloody right ;) :D
