My car is going to be too expensive to repair.
I had a second quote of 88 hours plus parts and paint to fix.
This is again £6k or more.
So with great regret it is time to move on.
I have sold the car for scrap.

I wish others better luck than me, some cars seem repairable, others not.

Very sorry to hear, Duke. It's always a shame when another old classic bites the dust. :(

If you're as addicted as me and many others on here then you'll be looking for a replacement sooner or later, no doubt.

wow 6k!!! I've got very similar issue's to the pics shown earlier and i'm just about to book the work after a 1k quote!!!! I was very insistent on him not starting the work at all if it was going to go above that too. As for me 1k is my limit. Anymore and I'd be scrapping it too but really don't want to. I understand there can be a massive difference in pricing up and down the country, but I just don't think your man wanted the work so he's over quoted.

Dukes car was particularly bad tho ! sorry to hear its scrapped, but alot of work was needed to get that baby back to health, not sure how it wasnt spotted sooner tho ?

sgking 27 September 2017 08:26 PM

we had all this done to our bugeye for last mot, it was £700, which is alot of money but we owned the car for 11 years or more so thought she deserved it!

Garage took a few weeks but tbh i was happy that someone was willing to take the job on.

Tgdevaney 28 September 2017 12:08 AM

I have the same job ahead of me but looking at some of the welding it looks like good penetration was not achived I would be a little concerned about structural integrity of strut tower

SouthWalesSam 28 September 2017 09:27 AM

Maybe.
But it’s my MOT tester, a veteran of integrity and experience whose testing cannot in any way be described as ‘friendly’ (and who’s actually inspected and examined the work) who needs to be convinced.

The Rig 02 October 2017 12:42 AM

Well here is mine awaiting its repair tomorrow , wish me luck !

Surgery successful !

Hell of a job tho , not the best welding , spotty rather than smooth seems like in the job above also but do hard to weld to at the angle !

Looking a lot better so what is the grey gunge you have put on top.

The Rig 02 October 2017 09:23 PM

The grey is Seam sealer . Goes like rubbery / hard , will then paint over with black underseal to blend .

johned 02 October 2017 09:32 PM

Great stuff, when can you do mine.

The Rig 02 October 2017 09:37 PM

Ha it's not a great job , wouldn't want to do it again lol !

Is yours as bad as mine was ?

johned 02 October 2017 09:52 PM

Not as bad but getting the suspension off looks like a nightmare.

The Rig 03 October 2017 09:59 AM

Nah suspension off is the easy bit, remove seats, rear shelf, undo 3 bolts, undo the 2 bolts on the rear hub, off comes the strut.

ideally i could of removed the hub/driveshaft etc but i cant undo the main long bolt that holds the tie bars on etc .

jaygsi 28 April 2018 08:08 AM

They won't have the parts in stock so don't bother.

Hi Aidy

Rear turrets and sills can a can of worms so it depends on how far you want to go.

As mentioned above: Goddard Fabrication in Brecon did my initial patch up work.
Goddard are at
Ffrwdgrech Industrial Estate, Brecon, LD3 8LA 01874 624600.

Ryan at Goddard did the initial cut out & weld up as per the pictures above with the suspension and running gear still in place.
That was sufficient to get the car through it's MOT.
Goddard now advertise 'vehicle rust repairs' as one of their core services.
This is a lower cost option.

Three months later I took the car to Ryan Jones (ProdriveRules) who, luckily for me, had set up shop at Torques Performance in Crickhowell a few miles down the road from me.
Ryan Jones did a full underbody restoration with full strip out, all running gear removed, turrets, arches, floor and sill ends rebuilt with new metal and all components refurbished or replaced.
That was a bit more expensive.
But with proper regular anti-rust maintenance the car ought to be good for around 10 more years.

Ryan Jones is back at C & K Motors in Leominster now: Unit 1, Brierley Way, Southern Avenue, Leominster HR6 0RW 01568 611991

Good luck
