Sleeves aint that expencive but machining and fitting can add significant amount:)

Mad Hammer 19 September 2014 08:13 AM

14mm studs ! Why ? Never had them on any of my engines and never had gasket issues. The AS Performance closed insert works very well on all engines, have run one in my sprint car 2.5 530/500 with no issues for 1.5 years. Shame a bent rod killed it :) anyway I will use that again.

I will say mapping is key, det kills these things.

Shaun 27 September 2014 08:57 AM

Don't do what I did, and put 2.4bar and race fuel through it. Over 600/600 was flaming awesome, especially with the response of a GT3076 at that level. However, the standard 2.5 block didn't like it too much! :D

I'd agree with Clive above.... Mapping is key. I ran and smashed the arse out of the engine, when it ran around 540bhp. It took a proper spanking on track. It wasn't until I had a moment of madness and got stupid (cranking the boost right up) that I started to have problems.

It did 10k having its arse kicked.... I surprised it lasted that long without needing a refresh.

would have to disagree with David (doesn't happen often) as the amount of engines we have converted for Joe Public and various "specialists" alike (even some of the initial doubters) speak volumes for me................plenty running in areas of boost and torque that would have 2.0 SCDB's running for the hills ;)

Looks bloody good to me :thumb:

Alyn,

As a matter of interest what sort of numbers have you done now; power levels; usage; mileage covered without headgasket or cylinder integrity issues?

If information is available on say 30 installs running at 500+ torque, and covered over 20k of enthusiastic use without strip downs or issues (relating to block issues) that would be a good indicator. :)

Turbovin 27 September 2014 12:35 PM

What's the price level of having one of these built? Is it similar to a CDB 2.35l?

AS Performance 27 September 2014 01:26 PM

i personally have little "first hand" solid records simply because most blocks are done on a machining only basis and supplied back to their owners or various well known & respected tuning / engine builders - the ones we have built in-house have been fitted to various road/race/rally cars and we have never seen a customer back with engine issues (having been run at 2BAR+ and mid 600's comfortably)

if there "was" any major issue we would have been the first to know and any faith in this process would have disappeared pretty quickly IMO

one particular team we supply blocks for run extreme static compression cars boosting at around 2.4BAR and were having to strip/re-build their engines every couple of events, once the CDB insert was installed that has become a simple end of season re-fresh (they run approx 5x cars in this spec)

probably the most "famous" CDB block would be AndyF's 6cylinder and it seems to cope OK'ish ;)
(we offer this service for all 4cyl ODB / SCDB as well as EZ30 & EG33) - to give you a rough guide we started doing these mid 2011'ish and in the first 12months averaged about 1 block/week that has now risen to more like 4-5 blocks per week

Shaun 27 September 2014 04:38 PM

I must admit I haven't heard of a failure, but it's difficult to deduce any objective reliability from that.

So by your reckoning, you've done at least 150 blocks. That's quite a few then.

As a matter of interest, when the rally car engines (assuming that was the use) were stripped once per year (using your inserts) was the block integrity all good? Or was the bottom end binned as part of the annual build. I take it these are 2.5 Scooby blocks?

AS Performance 27 September 2014 05:53 PM

the team we work very closely with simly re-fresh the motors with bearings, gaskets, etc. as i stated before - blocks are cleaned and re-used

they dont fail but you dont think thats an objective result?? i would say its 'just a little' more than that and a confirmation that this lends extra security to something i wouldn't put trust in std form above mid 400's

TimH 27 September 2014 06:01 PM

Really want to do this to my 2.5 - love the idea of 2+ bar boost :D

Run mine at 1.6 and occasionally up to 1.75 but even after 40k of fault-free running I still expect it to go bang every time I floor it!!

OK thanks for that info.

I think you're misunderstanding my "objective" comment, as I assume you thought it was a dig. Totally the opposite. It was in relation to the fact that I haven't heard of any failures, but who am I, so that statement doesn't mean a great deal. If you're stating there have not been any failures, then that holds a lot more credence.

If it's run for 40k at your level, I wouldn't be worrying too much. That would be the level of reliability I'd need if I ever went the 2.5 route again.

AS Performance 27 September 2014 06:40 PM

cheers for the clarification as didn't know how that read........:D

Shaun 27 September 2014 06:57 PM

No problem. Black and white nature of text can be a pain at times. :)

Do you do the machining / assembly in-house.

Apologies for all the questions, as I'm interested from a potential customer perspective.

AS Performance 28 September 2014 01:57 PM

yes all done 'in-house' which is why we are limited to the amount of builds we undertake fully, always happy to work with an individual or A.N. Other tuner on simply under taking the machine work and mods required to assist an engine build

most of the regular machining is offered including rear thrust conversions, M14 drill&tap, etc. and even our own uprated M14 stud options for 4cyl / 6cyl EG33 spec as well as new HD studs to suit the EZ30

just to add the engine work is just a small portion of the custom engineering services we offer.......
