Hi Pete, sorry, I didn't mean that starter cats don't last more than a few thousand miles, but they do degrade. It's this degradation that is simulated and used to 'sign-off' the emission capabilities of the engine. Also, the car may be sold in lots of markets but it's very unlikely that the precious metal loadings will be used to cover all markets - it's the major cost of the catalyst. Catalyst bricks are a few quid (except metallic) but precious metals cost hundreds. The cats may look the same and is reasonable to assume that the same design is used for all markets but why add hundred's of pounds to markets that don't need such coatings?

Thanks very much for being honest and informative. Im very greatfull. I want the best of both worlds - PPP and a SS exhaust, so it looks like the best plan is PPP it from standard and then come to you for your extra ingredients - should be some Salsa!!!!

Not sure the %'s. I asked the guy to do it as dark as the law alows. Was very surprised how dark legal is (i hope its legal!!!). Cnat recommend it enough. Just a pain reversing at night - you cant see a thing!!

Pete, did you test 'aged' catalysts? You shouldn't really quote figures for 'green' catalysts as it's not the true story.

I stuck religiously to the 4000rpm mark until the 1000 miles (car delivered with 16 on and the 1000 mile service done 48 hours later!!)

I didnt really open her up properly until 3000, now she has 4000 on and is running better but people are definitely saying that 6-7000 miles and they are properly run in.

You say you didn't open her up until 4,000 miles. How careful have you been, (revs/load). Another Scooby owner tells me Prodrive suggest occasional sympathetic stick following the 1,000 miles oil change for a few thousand miles.

Also, I'm thinking of the full SS exhaust, but I'm waiting to see what the PPP delivers first on the MY01. I may just go for the SS exhaust though.

Unless you guys have bottomless wallets there's a financial aspect to all this. The full PPP may deliver a bit more than a full SS system (we'll have to wait & see) but it's likely to cost twice the amount. The full SS or similar full exhaust costs £600-900, whereas the old PPP was £1700-2000. Bet the SS gives more bangs per buck.

The PPP includes chip mods too so we're not comparing like with like. Pete do you have any preferred chip upgrades to complement your systems for those that want to go further?

Good info Iain. I did look at cats some time ago. At reasonable costs (say 200 quid) they are either reasonable flow, or reasonably efficient. None were both. I suspect that some "race" cats will struggle to get a pre 00 car through an MOT.

With regard to chip upgrades... PPP, Link and Unichip all seem good and very reliable. Obviously the PPP is warantied by Subaru if you have a UK car. With the link/unichip units, get all your exhaust work done before the car gets mapped.

Good point on cost, and no I'm not rich. But, since I've already spent £20k+ and planning to spend more. Will I be happy with a complete SS exhaust only, or in the long run end up wanting a PPP. So the question is I guess, how much more in the real world, (not just bhp etc.), will the PPP give over exhaust only?

Check out the insurance aspects 1st though. Mine was happy for a small premium (£47) for intalling an exhaust but got all funny and pricey at the mention of "performance Packs" http://bbs.scoobynet.co.uk/frown.gif

Wifey seems to have accepted I'll be spending more on it. But thinks I'm mad.

On insurance, I'm with Directline and they recognise performance upgrade in bhp as a percentage. Up to 20% I was quoted £78 pa.
