modding a scooby is a addiction

I have spent over 7k since january on mine and
still to get a 2.1 stroker gt spec headers bigger injectors and a md321t which will be around another 6k maybe more LOL

Power is nothing without control though. Brakes on my widetrack are 800 worth of discs and pads. Add in coilovers. Arbs. All the tracking etc along with alk etc.

Best Modification Ive ever done on any of my Subaru's!! AP 6 pot brakes with 362mm discs!!!!:luxhello: like you say power is nothing without control!!!

£2500 is alot to some people jay!.and refering to the sensible replys its a wrx and £1400 is pretty good i was thinking around £3000 i havent really looked into the upgrade i really didnt want too have to do it but i spose it is worth it all in all. Which also means i have another year or 2 worth of modding before i got bored of it. Whats the maz a 6 speed can handle ? And what supporting turbo?

Instead of number chasing, my advice would be to keep the car way inside its limits and spend the money in other areas to build a more focused/balanced car instead of something that is just based on peak power. That way atleast there is less chance of it sh*tting itself when ever you put the foot down......I don't get this idea of pushing something to the point of destruction especially when the bill for failure can run into thousands!

Some of you guys must have deep pockets or lots of debt ha. Im always around the dudley area i live hurst hill il keep an eye out for you. Nice chatting with you guys. Best get to bed early start tommorow gota make some money for my next mods "p ha

For the price of a used 6-speed gearbox, you could probably buy 6 x used WRX 5-speed boxes.

That's just false economy....Weight up the cost of 5 WRX box's including labour for fitting plus the time its off the road against doing it right first time round with a box that will do what you ask of it.

Performance costs, as everyone knows so if someone doesn't have the funds to do correctly in the first place, whats the point of cutting corners.

Having gone down the WRX route because it was already running 350bhp when purchased I wish I had gone STI from the off. The mods allowed the car to push around 380bhp. I had to spend £500 on some nearly new K-sports fronts (mine was an import with 2 pot sliders!!) The bottom end let go 3K miles later (surprised it didn't happen sooner) Now I've gone with a STI/aftermarket forged engine (and paid the bill!) I'm left knowing my can be mapped to get an extra 30/40bhp. I've been told the 5 speed will take 350bhp, but you hear of them going pop lower and also of people running near 400bhp and being ok....for a bit at least:) Question is if I push the mods and engine to what they can now do will I be looking at new box options. I have spent more in total than I think I would have if starting with an STI, or even buying a finished motor already running good power and mods.

It really does depend how you drive and agree with the comment on torque being the biggest issue rather than max bhp.

is it a hawk?

JGlanzaV 27 March 2014 09:21 AM

a 6 speed box isnt the holy grail and can still break the same as a 5 speed, my 6 speed is completely and utterly shagged albeit it running quite a bit more power than 400 but they do break

Donz144 27 March 2014 09:39 AM

The other point to consider, all be it perhaps slightly less important, is what onus you put on having a unique car with your own stamp on it. Sure, going for an STi makes for an easier ride when in pursuit of numbers but developing your WRX carefully may lead to a total one off that you love even more.

My advice for what's its worth would be to stick to sub 400 figures WITH a 6 speed. They are inherently stronger so you wont have the worry, especially if you go with launch control etc. Once you break the 400 barrier and but torque beyond that, you've really got quite a different animal under. Without some serious upgrades to brakes, suspension etc you'll not be able to use it safely.

With a complete ''sti' hawk wagon build costing over 10k with Cosworth engine, 6 speed, TD05 20g, Porsche brakes, full Whiteline kit, Miltek spec c and good rubber putting out over 410/435 (@ 1.5bar) I still think back to my 360/360 set up and wonder if in fact I had more fun then without the expense. HOWEVER, I do value having a 'one-off' build and as such have no regrets!!

Agreed, OP needs to answer what year and model WRX he has. Hawk WRX 5 speed boxes are a little stronger than previous WRX boxes, but no where near the 6 speed boxes.

Tidgy 27 March 2014 10:57 AM

im running 390/410 on a hawk 5 speed with one of the fastest spooling turbo's out there and touch wood (pats head) it hasn't gone yet,a lthough i do treat it with sympathy so dont launch it in first

BrownPantsRacing 27 March 2014 11:17 AM

I have been running 340/380 on my hawk 5 speed for 3 years and 20k miles now. (Car at 60k total) No line launching buy plenty of 4 wheel drifting at speed and agressive driving. Touch wood been perfect so far.

Brett-wv14 27 March 2014 08:03 PM

would it be beneficial sticking in a hawk 5 speed? cost/benefit ratio?

Tidgy 27 March 2014 08:08 PM

there 2.5 fitment not 2.0 im afraid.

on a 5 speed box hehe.

BrownPantsRacing 27 March 2014 08:11 PM

Bet that's nice to drive. What turbo?

Brett-wv14 27 March 2014 08:11 PM

niiiiice...i need some of that in my life haha ")

Tidgy 27 March 2014 08:14 PM

the new sc46 + hehe had old one on and it went well, new one gave roughly 5bhp more 5 ftlb more, o and 500rpm spool improvment hahahaha

BrownPantsRacing 27 March 2014 08:45 PM

That's a nice improvement in spool. Lovely job! What boost you peaking at?

this is advice that everyone ignores despite it being the best on this thread...

wtf is the point of 400 bhp if you have to drive it carefully because you havent got the brakes, suspension or gearbox to cope and cant drive it correctly for fear of ruining your gearbox??

a 350 bhp 6 speed car will be faster as the car has the tools to launch from the line and use the power without fear of braking the shoddy wrx parts.

Is that conservatively mapped as thats way under what the turbo will give?

you can break any car if you launch it hard enough, so thats a load of rubbish

still running standard ecu and top mount, so boost limited, dont wanna remove the saftey of it for a few extra horse, spool and torque gives plenty of grunt :) lol

Fitting a 6 speed gearbox to a WRX is false economy!:thumb:! Personally I cant see the point in spending £2k on a 6 speed gearbox on a WRX in the first place, id push the standard 5 speed gearbox if I was looking for 400bhp and if it breaks, replace it with another 5 speed box which would cost you a lot less then the 6 speed set up would cost!! if it happens a 2nd time then maybe its time to give up on the search for more power!!!:D

I think doing it right the first time, he would have started with a STi in the first place!!!;)

I cant argue with that.... :D

stonejedi 28 March 2014 08:01 PM

400 bhp and a 5 speed is a relationship that will soon end in divorce:DIf you get my drift.I think members do get carried away with bhp numbers and 9 times out of ten it all ends in tears, one way or the other.SJ.
