Ahhhh so you are still alive then :)

ScoobyDoo69 20 October 2010 10:50 AM

So would there be any harm in me switching from my JennyChem meth to this Trinity place's meth?? I'm surprised that it's quite a bit cheaper.

JP4 20 October 2010 11:20 AM

Cheap not necessarily the best.

These guys are worth looking at as I buy my 109 from them and few others on 22b use them as well.....

I've used Jennychem for some years, and until Clive's problems I'd never even heard of reclaimed methanol. As they are only a reseller, I would think it's more likely that they've only ever sold virgin methanol.

MartynJ 20 October 2010 09:32 PM

Only ever used Jennychem, never had any issues with their methanol.

SkullFudge 22 October 2010 06:21 PM

Whilst at Jennychem I was talking with the woman who served me and she phoned the tech department to find out %'s of the Meths they sell.
It came back as 99.3%.
I dare say that is good enough as many use it but when I contacted Trinity Research there knowledge & answers were in a totally different league.

(Lets not forget one thing fellas. Jennychem sell Methanol purely as a cleaning product, not as a race fuel.
They have zero knowledge on race fuels and 100% knowledge on cleaning products.)

Now bearing that in mind, the following is a quoted email I posted earlier from a Trinity Research employee in the tech department.

Clive

DMC is a petrochemical by-product (di-methyl carbimide) associated with recovered methanol rather than virgin.

Generally speaking, recovered methanol will also contain a spectrum of other SPs (side products)including toluene, benzene, phenol, ethanol etc.

This would, in principle, certainly account for the unstable engine performance.

Regards

Mark Schofield Research Engineer
M.Sc B.Eng DHE AMIMechE

I doubt if we would feel a difference but regarding the fine mapping for Meths would the SP's come into the equation ?

Reclaimed methanol is methanol that has been used in a manufacturing process and is then recycled and cleaned. Methanol is very fragile, and reclaimed methanol cannot be cleaned completely. Its purity will be lower than "virgin" product.

SkullFudge 23 October 2010 01:53 AM

Paul, have you ever had any dealings mapping Nitromethane ?

I can't comment on the nitro question.

AS for the methanol, the 99.3% sounds like non-virgin methanol, but benzene, toluene, xylene and ethanol all sound good to me! I have also tried adding paint thinners to v-power and that works quite well, but my lawnmower didn't like to start in the winter with that.

If the trinity methanol is available easily then it seems like a good bet to me.

Paul

Have been talking to a mate who has been part of a top fuel team for 7 yrs and he said forget it.
It will just blow the heads clean off even if strapped on.
:(

What are the largest studs we could use on P2 ??? ;)

You can fork orf the P2 engine is already built and it already has the biggest studs available.

Step further away from the crazy idea machine!!!

Didnt Andy F try Nirto and blew his heads off?

SkullFudge 26 October 2010 03:04 PM

I'm not going down that road !

Maybe in 2011 a 35 billet wheel turbo & larger injectors may find there way into the engine bay though :norty:

dazdavies 26 October 2010 05:30 PM

I'll slap you with the sensible stick if you're not careful.
A billet 35R will ruin that as an every day car. It'll be laggy as hell.

That's what P2 is for sonny jim!! :D

SkullFudge 17 August 2011 08:58 PM

As some of you may know I ran 2 laps at Bruntingthorpe last Saturday and at the end of lap two the engine tone suggested it was firing on three cylinders.

The Nr 2 injector had failed causing damage to a valve and to the piston through running lean. A compression test revealed that the cylinder had a 90% leakage.
Olly mentioned that Meths hasn't helped and to be honest the car was running fine until I put a 20% mix in at Bruntingthorpe at the weekend for the first time in a while.

If I were honest I have been amazed something like this has not happened before now. I'm not one of the many that have big power just to say (I'm running 500 at the wheels), the car has been used hard and many times and many will tell you.
I have often found myself in competitions whereby the poor ol' P1 is surrounded by monster looking cars stripped out and trailered to the event and she has performed right up there with them and often beaten many of them in sprints, tracking and events like the MLR 30-130 where the old girl was in 1st place at lunch time although I came 11th by the close of the day (2009).

42.000 miles of which over 20,000 was on Meths. Many track days / sprints / 2 MLR 30-130's / 30+ runs at the Pod / over to The Ring & back including 3 fierce laps / 100;s of blasts with passengers including launches and plenty more I cant be bothered to list, so the build has been superb.

Not sure if the P1 will be rebuilt to its current spec or if 2.1 with the GT35 b/w will be addressed.
Funding cars like this isn't cheap and with P2 being an ongoing affair I will need sit down with O & M and come to a decision.

Had one of my vans blow to bits last night as well, so that will also need replacing.
That's another 10 - 15 fooking K by the time I have it written and
had the back racked out like we do to enable all equipment to fit in' I always do this myself but always shocked at how much it costs. :vcrying::vcrying:

At this rate I'm expecting a British Airways 767 to land on my house next week. :001_rolleyes:

Shaun 17 August 2011 09:11 PM

Sorry to hear of the engine woes.... goes with the territory though. It had a good innings by the sounds of it. :)

What's happened with P2 as I haven't read anything for a while. I half expected it to be on the road by now, ripping up the tarmac. :) Nothing is ever that simple though.... I understand that.

Mad Hammer 17 August 2011 09:12 PM

Oh dear mate, you have had some crap luck this week :(

Don't discount the 30R billet mate for a road car ;)

P2 is still ongoing. Much work involved. The P2 thread will be updated soon.

Unlucky skullfudge ..... not a good result!

But, so others dont make the same mistake (including myself as im soon to get a meths map), how has this changed your opinion of running meths? was the injector failure definately due to the meths (i presume) eating the seals in the injector? Will you still be getting a meths map on your next build?

I think you definately have been the ambassador of meths as i know of nobody else who has used it for as long and travelled as far!

Cheers bud:thumb:

To be honest mate if this is a direct result of using Meths I will stop using it.
Simon (Jolly Green Monster) has also achieved many miles on Meths and yes I believe we have used it more than most having both driven more than 20K miles.

The P1 was running as sweet as a nut including the 150 miles to the event.
I filled the tank with the 20% mix at the event and things didn't sound right from when I started the engine. Sounded and felt lumpy. Whilst driving from the pits I initially took it easy out onto the track but then it seemed to clear it's self.
The higher the rpm the better it felt so I carried on but still monitoring it carefully.
Just completing lap 2 and from 167 - 170mph I begun to brake. When I selected 5th it sounded like it was running on 3 so I coasted to the pits.

May be an issue with the injector seals or the mix may of gelled causing a blockage of the injector.

We have studied the Meths mix before when the Meths was contaminated and separation was very evident, although this was my fault as the Meths supply was left open to an air supply. Since that issue I have always bought Meths in 25 Ltr containers opposed to 210 Ltr drums and kept all air tight.

The motor has been faultless over the 42,000 miles other than a failed map sensor, a previous issue with Meths exposed to air and now this so logic does suggest to give the Meths a miss from now on.

I will keep the thread updated with the findings as they become evident.

Pisser Clive. All the best with the rebuild.

Hi guys.. im new to here but today bought myself a p1 after alot of thought. prev owned a sti version 2 and 3 import. both great cars and no problems. So back to the p1. Went to view alone as had no1 to ask and car looked pretty good for the price and had a little drive round the car park. all ok. anyhow on the m5 coming home i have a clutch problem. was all ok whn driving slow round the town but when pushing it after changing up the clutch peddle released slower almost middle then back up. any ideas? all electrics were down but mostly fixed bar gauges which im unsure how to do. pants at electrics lol. also had a flat spot at about 90 going up a hill when over taking and had to pull into middle lane then power seemed to be back. so far ive been told to bleed clutch . and reset ecu. help plz any1

Busterbulldog 25 August 2012 10:31 PM
