Default Canon G15, G1X or Sony RX100?

Looking for something a little more portable to replace my DSLR - or as close as is possible without a mirror.

Anyone have experience of the Canon G15 or G1X? The G1X has the nice swivel screen and a lovely big sensor, but lacks the macro capability and DOF of the G15 - plus it's bulkier.

Then there's the Sony RX100. Seems to be getting rave reviews all round and is a proper pocket camera too. Proper 20MP is a real bonus and low light shots look great, but macro capability is poor. I'm also struggling with it as a camera brand compared to Canon or Nikon.

I know it's hard to tick all the boxes that a DSLR does, but which one comes closest? I need to do more research. Any thoughts welcome.

Do have look at the Fujfilm X series. The Xe1 will do everything you need with interchangeable lenses or the X20 with fixed zoom.

I'd like to avoid anything with interchangeable lenses, since I know I'll end up with another big bag full of them Although, this does mean that it gets harder to find something that does everything, or as close to it as possible.

The X20 I really like, other contenders are the Lumix DMC-LX7, Samsung EX2F, Olympus XZ-2 & Nikon P7700. Some really great compacts out there at the moment.

I went with a G15 - I was planning to get a G1X, but it's quite a bit bigger.

The last one I had was a G7, so needless to say that things have moved on a bit and I'm very happy with the G15.

TBH I haven't used the manual controls yet, I've just left it on auto and it's taken cracking pictures. I did use a snow setting when we were skiing and that set the exposure almost perfectly.

The video is 'only' 720p, but again, great quality and much better than my big 10 year old Sony video camera.

My main camera is a 1d with a bunch of L lenses, so I'm reasonably demanding

My father-in-law has the G1X and loves it, but it is bulky. I don't really need the pull out screen and the macro is a let down, even if the big sensor compensates for that somewhat.

I'm leaning more towards the Sony RX100 since it's so small, packs a large sensor and seems to equal the G15 on almost every level. It doesn't have a viewfinder and is more expensive, but it looks an incredible camera for it's size.

Edit: The G15 shoots 1080p/stereo video doesn't it?

I still use my Lumix TZ5 since it's such a great camera and yes, this too only shoots 720p.

I went for the RX100 in the end. It was more expensive than the others, but for IQ vs portability it seems to really have broken the mould when it comes to compact cameras. Hope I don't regret it, but I've worked on the premise that if it doesn't work out I should be able to sell it on for the cost of a second hand G15/G1X

The macro on the Canon Powershot G series cameras is absolutely awesome, down to 1cm. This is the main reason I wanted one. I have Nikon SLR cameras but I am loving my second hand G9. Beyond 400 iso it isn't great, but it is still very versatile. Picture quality must be much improved on the G15.

I bought mine from http://www.procamerashop.co.uk/. The camera is an import, but identical in every way (except warranty) and considerably cheaper than other UK shops. They were excellent in answering my questions.

I did regret it Since sold the RX100 and bought a Nikon D3200 plus a few lenses. I missed having a 50mm prime too much

I have a Lumix TZ40 as pocket camera as well as my Nikon D300.

The new TZ60 ticks a lot of boxes too.... a small 100% viewfinder is back, hinged rear screen, 18.1MP, THIRTY times zoom, 24mm wide angle equivalent, Leica lens, uprtaed battery.

Mind, at 219, the TZ40 is incredible value now, I love mine. I've already set it up and used it remotely with an app on the smart-phone, and transferred pics wirelessly.

I still use my trusty old Lumix TZ5 for when I need a pocket camera. Taken some nice shots with that and will get another at some point

I took these with just with the TZ5:

Lumix with the Leica lens: hard to beat, esp at that price, and with Panasonic's electronics....
