Im on a photography forum and a guy has posted some pics (of another guys car) posting its a 400hp ST ?
I thought STs (even the new stuper duper volvo ones, not cossie) can only get 250, maybe 300 tuned max?

Not that up on ST’s but am an RS mk2 owner. Almost every other RS owner on RSOC.com seems to be running 400bhp with no issues. I was at SCC on Saturday and they are running 500+ on a car that Rob the owner drives daily. And one RSOC member is running 600 by now:

Same engine and plenty of maps and mods getting over 300bhp for around the £2k mark. So with the right uprated components 400 should easily be achievable

I used to have the ST, and you have to remember that Volvo intended engine to be 275 standard and Ford put them down to 225. I had a Code red remap & induction kit and it was at 285. And the guy that does the tunning says the 5 pot engine is so easy to tune, you can easily reach big figures without much effort.
Just make sure its not wet otherwise you wont be going anywhere untill your out of 3rd gear

Only just seen this thread,
I have one that's running 330bhp currently and I'm planning on swapping the turbo and aiming for 360 in the next month or so.
I've recently had additional strength added to the cylinder liners as they can be a weak point when pushing over 320.
I know a guy running 420 on an ST engine with the same strengthening I've had done, forged internals and a bigger turbo.
There's some big power Focus ST's about and contrary to popular belief on here the power is easy to put down through the front wheels.

Car wasn't running 100% at the time, it's had new uprated spark plugs fitted since and running much better.

Then the Standard RS engine isn't any more powerful than a mildly modified ST, so it depends on what your goal is, if you are wanting over 400bhp then an RS engine is probably the best option.

Probably about right yes, the actual engine is around 3k but then you have to looka t other things such as the ABS module which isn't cheap and other bits which all add up.

The main reason is that RS engines run at lower compression than ST engines which seems to make the difference.
There's quite a few companies offering modifications to the ST engines now to strengthen them, the most popular company at the moment for it is Jam-Sport in Northamptonshire and it costs £750 they have a car running over 500bhp with the block strengthening done as a demo car.

i was going to say the liners were the weak point when i had mine, 330 was the limit at the time on standard engine. iirc it isnt actually the volvo engine, its a cheapened/weakened ford version of it

When you consider a standard valve S60R has 300bhp, not hard to imagine that 400 out of the same engine is achievable.
There are quit a few T5's kicking about with big bhp. Search for Volvo 850 T5 with 560 bhp on YouTube.

Many ST owners go to Volvo dealers for parts as they are often cheaper than Ford.

jamsport have also just done a 600bhp FRS, i believe stuart milican's ST is around 500.....
easy engine to tune, its been around years, people in the volvo scene have the same engine running well over 700bhp....

I has the same block mod on my car, will never get to that power level though.
Stu's a top bloke.

Typical ignorant view I'm afraid. There's loads of ST's and RS's putting down big power with no traction issues and corner very well, technology has moved on but some people can see past the Subaru 4 wheel drive system.
