Default Diesels ( tdci in this case )

first diesel iv had ( 5 years now ) and replaced turbo early on

Lately on first starting in morning its bit reluctant- coughs into life with quite a bit of smoke ( never did this before )

and doesnt do it again when starting from cold a few minutes later up the road ....??

could this be something expensive or something like egr valve needs mucking out ???

it failed mot first time on emissions - before they thrashed it up the motorway or similar

Problem is aprt from long journeys abroad the temp needle hardly moves , its done 140k thereabouts

if ur gauge isnt working much it may be worth swapping the CTS out, this may also help with the starting issues, Its common on VAG cars but Im no expert on fords.

Resistance check the ECT sensor, if it's OK, replace the thermostat.
If not, ECT sensor, then see if it gets up to temp.
Still may need to change the stat.

Glow plugs have very little influence, at this time of year, so you can count these out.

Fords cold fuel CAL is not terribly good, so it's probably costing you some mpg.

If the car doesn't get some good m'way runs then I'd muck the egr out anyway. It's fairly straightforward.
I'd also have a look at the pipe which attaches to the bottom of the egr as they are very prone to splitting which will make the car prone to smoking

there are 2 stats, one for the oil cooler and one more normal type. The engines are known for overcooling when problems arise with one of the stats. Pattern replacements are a bit hit and miss due to the gaskets used.
As Brun says pipe under egr (assuming front facing egr - some are at the rear of the engine crossover is about 2003 / 2004) can split, feel it and check for an oily mess. you may have this anyway so wipe clean and then try it again when its done a few miles.
Also if you car has a maf (again some don't) check the pipe from the maf to the turbo, there may be some ribbed bellows and it is common for these to split as well (not visibly noticeable but be careful checking)

If you have a front mounted egr, then it takes minutes to remove but a bit longer to clean. You could get an egr blanking plate from ebay for a few quid which will eliminate the egr. If you remove the egr also remove the inlet manifold as well to give that a clean. You may be amazed with the gunk in there!! (A good soak in a suitable cleaner, rinse, soak again, rinse, then maybe repeat again depending on severity!)

Is your idle ok?

Hi yes , idle not quite as smooth as before but okay
its the first start in the morning/else - definitely coughing into life + the smoke , def getting worse as well

but start again 5 minutes uo the road and youd never think anything was amiss !

i better actually try some of the above suggestions i think ,sooner rather than later

cheers

could also be injectors as well (about £132 inc vat each).

if it hasn't been done recently then change the fuel filter for a genuine ford/bosch.

If the glow plugs have not been changed then this can also cause the rough start and more smoke on start up when cold
Probably a combination of 2 or more issues though the 04 didn't suffer as much with injector issues as the earlier cars.

Tony

Ps, shove a large bottle of redex in there and give the car a good run out

QUOTE]

earlier cars injectors were more reliable than later cars, and believe me they do suffer!

Leak off test for the injectors can help identify injector problems but isnt always conclusive. When my injectors went last year (56 plate st), it would start ok when cold but the idle was lumpy and felt like the engine wanted to remove itself!. When warm though idle returned to normal.
