I would go for a Mondeo Tdci.
I've owned a Mondeo 115 Tdci and a Leon 140 Tdi in the past, the Mondeo was far more reliable I have to say. The turbo was worn out on the vag unit after 40k. Really knocked my confidence in German engines.

I've moved to a Mondeo TDCI. I use it for towing a small box trailer, which it does with ease, even when full. The boot is huge, then if you drop the rear seats, you have a huge load area.

A lot of reviews say that the 1.6 ecoboost diesel is the one to go for.

Common fault on the Mondeo is the bonnet sensor saying the bonnet is open, when it actually closed, this is due to water getting in, but is easily solved with WD40.

I used to drive the Focus estate as a police response vehicle. They took a hell of a lot of punishment but kept on going.

Out of the two, I'd favour the Mondeo, though the next generation is out next year (which looks really smart).

Also, on the Mondeo, the hand brake is on the right of the centre console, on the Focus, it was left of the console. I found the Mondeo's hand brake easier to operate, without rubbing the passenger's leg.

All i'll say is avoid the passat, fine if you get a good one but expensive if you get a dodgy one, mine cost me £2k in 6 months and it had only done 35k when i bought it, and all seemed perfect, needless to say i traded it sharpish.
