Default EVO X or M5??

Been looking at a 360 evo X or BMW M5, two very different cars I know!

Can get a 08 360 evo X with 15k on the clock for about £25000

Or for similar money 05 plate M5 with about 50k on the clock?

Which would you go for and why? Pros and cons of both cars?

Thanks....

As an every day car, I'd chose the M5. will be comfortable, refined, lots of toys, and be super quick when required.

As a weekend car only? I'd have the Evo. Will be the more rewarding as a cross country blaster.

The Evo will be tiresome compared to the M5 as an everyday tool, and perversly, you'll probably get better mpg from the 500bhp 5.0 V10 in the M5 than you will the 2.o Turbo in the Evo.

But then again, I'd probably chose an RS4 over the pair of them.

And it's had the very first service stamped.

Definitely the M5.
Or an M6.

The evo would do a lot of different things compared to the M5 but I think I would buy the M5 as it would hold it's money better for longer and would feel a better built car.
But that's onlt my opinion

When did the current M5 come out? Think you'd struggle to get one for £25k.

And I know several who have had an M5 or an M6 and are getting an average of... wait for it...

10mpg!!!

All have sold them since. With a 70 litre tank, you'd be filling up almost constantly.

Been out since 2005 you can get 60k milers for £25k, yep my brothers freind had one 10-12mpg on short trips, sold his because he was on first name terms with the local petrol station owner

The people though who buy these cars new and spend £60k basic, and probably most spec them to nearer £70k aren't that bothered about petrol costs.

Most will be company cars anyway, and those that ain't? Well if you can afford to spend £70k on a car...............

It's second hand buyers (just like with Subaru) that buy the cars without realising just how much it costs to run the damn things.

Stilover - of course they aren't worried about costs but those with the money to buy these sort of cars new ARE worried about interrupting any long journey with constant fuel stops.

Fine in a loony track car or supercar, not to handy in a long distance GT/supersaloon.

10mpg is crazy. And with a 70 litre tank that's just annoying.

Even your dad's "holy" R8 will get far better than 10mpg...

My Old Boss had a M5, he used to drive a 200mile round trip to work everyday. After 2 years it had done just over 100k with a knackered Gearbox and worn engine. Spare oil had to be kept in the car because it used so much. Swapped it for an RS6, although the M5 was a beast.

M5 all the way, i love evo's but my mates got a 2007 M5 and the thing is something else, it's been remaped, lowered on 21 inch hartge rims and a tubi style back boxs and sounds awsome, it excellerate's like nothing i've ever been in or on, when on the harshest gear change it practicaly lifts you out of your seat and throws you back, has a massive grin factor and if de restricted good for 200mph (thats if you go to germany alot) plus you get endless toys to play with

but like everyone has said VERY juicy, but does improve a bit after a remap???

i know my friend say's his is bad but only think it goes down to 10-12 mpg only when he goes to and from work which is about a mile, but i think it averages out to about 20-21, he has'nt had any problems with his apart from a fault with the cd player, and brake judder but thats more driver fault than manufacter lol but yes parts are'nt cheap, its due a set of rear disc's and pads and gen bmw come in at £500!!!

Lets be serious, a 500bhp car thats best part of 1900Kg is never gonna be great on fuel..

How many cars with that kinda BHP get even 20 MPG ?

I think its a feat of engineering to get anything approaching 20 Mpg out of the car,so to expect more than that is plain silly...

Ok on long motorway runs a decent Mpg may well be achieved, but on an overall basis high teens are more realistic..

That said, i dont think an Evo will be any better.I would think that both cars will cost similar amount to run and own..

Evo will lose money faster though, and you have to think of the image it portrays..

M5 all the way for me..

Everyone runs m5s on thier p500 sport setting in the i drive, you can run them in the p400 mode and get slightly better results. Maybe 3-5mpg if you are very lucky. (another bmw tech chiming in here!!!)

LOL.

That's a pretty fair summary, to be honest. - If thinking of driving experience rather than looks, or prestige.

An M5 is savage when you want it to be, with a heads up display, self bolstering seats around corners, and torque coming out of the wazoo! An evo will need servicing every 3500-4500 miles so it's going to spend more time off of the road. Not to mention lag and the, dare i say it chav factor. You could go anywhere in an m5 and not be looked at too much (weddings, funerals, popping to the shops, holidays) in an evo everyone is going to look. (i get stared at in my "52" wrx bug by everyone) be it for good or bad reasons- it's sometimes gets a bit annoying.
But thats just me- go where your heart tells you! They both are capable of giving you warp speed ten!!!

Aren't the Evo X service intervals more sensible now?

I'd go for the M5 anyday, but you would need to do some real research into the likely costs.

EVO's just don't appeal to me at all to be honest - I don't doubt on a country road it possibly be quicker - or at least easier to drive quickly, but it jist wouldn't be as special.

M5's run on a "condition based service" the car will count down to certain requirements and give you a display in yellow "service soon" or red "service now/overdue" on items like, oil and filter, spark plugs, brakes front and rear, microfilter, m.o.t, vehicle check (kind of like an inspection II) but you can have them all done at different times depending on thier time of replacement/wear. It's an M5 so none of the items are cheap. For example the engine require 9.3litres of castrol tws (opie can tell you the price per litre!!) and a filter is about £20. Plus you have to change microfilters with an oil change on newer ones and i think the microfilters are £100!!

Had an M5 for nearly a year and love it. Amazing at the Ring!

Does drink fuel but so do most cars that are very fast!

Thanks for the replies, think I need to own the X before I grow up, maybe the M5 in a couple of years. Drove a standard 360 a few days ago and it was impressive, sure if I drove an M5 that would also impress but for £25k think I prefer the idea of a newer car with less mileage than an older car with higer miles.

M5 over the Evo X - which is just too slow and looks crap

I would rather have an Evo 8 and take it up to about 400-420bhp.... for small money

Quick Reply: EVO X or M5??
