I'm taking the first steps to getting my GTI back on the road since it'll save me close to £1700 a year if I use it for work, leaving a nice weekend car in the shape of my STI

She needs about a grand spending on her to bring her into mint status but it'll be well worth it in the long run - plus i love driving her

So has anyone else on here got one?

I want one again, I am an 8 valve fan though, love both but the 8 valve takes it for low down grunt and lazy style, pretty much as quick most of the time, apart from 100 % occassions.

I had an F plate 8v a few years back. Peco DTM twin pipe backbox, 3 door in white. I loved it but never looked after it. Before the Scoob, it was the car I'd had the longest (over 4 years).

Lowered it 40mm, and could feel ever pebble I ever run over lol. Put a full Janspeed exhaust on it, then traded it in not long after. Crazy...

Like J4CKO said, the low down grunt was class. Also, with the exhausts, my first ever "loud" car

Had a golf driver with the big bumpers and twin DTM exhaust. Then lowered it 60mm!! Couldn't get it off the two post ramp it was that low. I'd love a mint mk1 or 2 gti though. Modern day classics.

Another show of support for the 8valver, my black F reg was a rocket ship..... i must scan my pictures in... I had a 2.0 litre bore out, dropped with original BBS rims and handled like it was on rails..

sold it to a garage in Croydon,,,, did anyone on here buy it?

I remember a "spirited drive" home against an 8v version ... was close but my 16v seemed quicker. Seem to recall the 16v liked the revs?

Apparently a TSR manifold transforms the 16v - gives it the low down muscularity of the 8v yet retains the top end of the 16v (so i've read)

The 16v is a better engine then 8v. They only reason the 8v seem's a bit more punchy low down is because the power drops off so quickly higher up the rev range. In fact the 16 is as good as the 8v low to mid range and produces way more up top.

Correct, any torque graphs show 16v is better across the rev range..

bit of an urban myth that the 8v has more grunt lower down..

It does indeed, the Oak Green one above was totally stock (even down to the sh!te Blaupunkt stereo) and always felt relatively gutless in the lower rev range

The Blue one I have now has a TSR manifold with a Jetex system and pulls like a train, in every gear, right from tickover

As you can imagine it's slightly harder on front tyres though

Having owned both, I do beg to differ slightly, whilst on a dyno the 16Vs do indeed have more torque at lower revs, they definitely prefer to be revved (and hard ) to get the best out of them

Whereas an 8V can be hustled along down twisty lanes at a quite startling pace without ever leaving 5th gear

No unfortunately I sold it when I moved out to Thailand because it seemed a shame to have such a minter sat there deteriorating

Whilst it's not a patch on the Oak Green car in terms of condition and originality, the mods it has received (exhaust, suspension, etc) make it a more entertaining drive by far

Bloody expensive though!

The best mod to make that 16v so fast was to put a new distributor on and time the thing up properly, it was too retarded previously. I bought a timing gun especially!

I had a Jetta 16v, I enjoyed it when I was in the mood, not so cool when you are suited and booted driving around the town centre in 80 degree heat.

Also standing at the side of the road with a broken gearbox is not great either.

Fast & fun, potentially temperamental.

I had an Oak Green Mk2 16v which was a lot of fun, but the Mk3 16v i replaced it with was, in my opinion, a better car. Faster, more refined. The Mk2 had more "character" i guess, but the Mk3 did most things better.

Im with CrispDuk, had six GTI's, mk1's and Mk2's, I upgrade from an 8 vale to a sixteen valve and though it was nice it wasnt what I expected, I expected more of the same but its a different character altogether, on balance I prefer the 8 valve and regardless of figures they do feel nicer, whether thats torque or not I dont know.

Would love either again but I am not allowed another.
