not wanting to start a flame war here ....
but, i just had one try to race me (on a private motorway)
and the blighter couldnt get anywhere near to me
either they are slower than i thought or a chipped 2 litre diesel golf is remarkably nippy
i was amazed and so was the lad driving the clio
it was goo natured and he admitted he couldnt keep up
whilst the golf isnt a patch on my old scooby for drivability it looks better and is a hell of a lot cheaper to run

I own a GTTDi 150 Revo'd to 190bhp and 290lb/ft and have owned a Clio 182 and 172 Cup.

The Clio 182's have circa 148 lb/ft versus nearly 300 lb/ft in my Golf so naturally midrange is going to be stronger in the Golf, however do not dismiss the wee Clios, they are certainly not slow.

The Clio has about 165bhp/tonne and the Golf (Revo'd 150) just 137bhp/tonne so what the Clio lacks in grunt it more than makes up for in the power stakes

I had a scooby classic, clio 172 cup and now have a seat ibiza 130tdi sport.

The clio cup was a dog and the slowest in real terms.

doesn't suprise me that you had the legs on the clio tbh.

Surely this has to do with the drivers willingness to exceed the speed limit by the greatest amount, most modern cars will do well in excess of 100mph, so in a "race" situation the top speed of most cars will exceed what the owners are willing to drive at.
I have had people say that their car is faster than mine because I was not willing to drive at the speeds (motorway) on the public highway.
On the track the real truth would come out.
btw. I rate the Golf as a good car. Clio's ok. but would think the 2.0 petrol would have the Golf TDi .
ps if this was a "real" private motorway than I apologise.

In a straight line drag I reckon it would be a case of who put the pedal down first between the two cars mentioned. I also think that the diesel would have a good advantage due to it's torque unless the clio was screwing his car upto the red line in every gear and wasn't caught out to start with. At least upto 100mph or so where they run out of steam.
I don't imagine you got much above that did you?

I used to own a spicy Fabia vRS. I could stick to caged Clio's in straight lines, but as long as there is a house between the front wheels it will never go around a bend. I lapped Donninton Park about 5 seconds slower than a 182 sport. That is quite a gap considering i had the faster car.

I got rid of the Fabia as it was a bit bland really.................

Still at least you get 50mpg

I only ever had one (and only) duel with a Clio 182 and to be honest i thought i was either gonna get my *** handed to me on a plate or it would give me a very good run for my money.

we both launched from from the lights and i'll admit it was (for a hatch) quick but i have to say i obliterated it and not by a small margin it was so far behind me it was laughable, and yes he was trying

For a hatch though like i said i still was impressed and i'd love a go in the Trophy or Cup versions


I wouldn't be so confident round a twisty circuit like Cadwell though

it was good natured and i took it to about 120 ish
(i stress private motorway) after 100 he didnt seem to have much left and only caught up when i braked heavily for a roundabout
i also made a focus st 170 look tame too
he caned it up to 125 ish but i was a few cars lenghs away by then
god i love this lil diesel car!!

ST170 is a pretty lardy car, i used to wipe the floor with them in my little starlet gt.

As above, drive around a track or some country lanes the clio would be away. I've test driven a 182 which i didn't rate at all. I was going to get a Trophy once i had sold my cupra but have changed my mind after driving the normal 182.

Didn't like the interior, etc of the 182 either. Sit quite high, big steering wheel and apart from the Recaros in the trophy i'd imagine it's all the same.

Opted for a DC5 ITR, just means i've got to be patient and save for a couple more months.

Revo'd golf TDI's are quite quick...went down santa pod with two mates,both of them had revo'd their golfs to 290 lb/ft ...both of em kept up with my Mini copper s(Standard)...gotta arrange a track day and show em who's boss

I wouldn't say ClioSport has anymore chavs on it than SN, infact SN may have a far worse infection of all things burbery!

My wee Clio Cup is one of the best cars I've owned. I thought it was quick as standard! Now, with a few choice mods, IMHO, Taz's diesel wouldn't pose a huge problem, be close tho'! Should run 14.0-14.2 1/4 mile, that's only with £600 spent on mods, running about 180-185bhp/tonne. My old Mk2 FF(Full fat) 172 wouldn't get close!

The same mods that allowed my brother to acheive a 14.1 at over 100mph down the 1/4 mile, allowed him to stay with my P1 to 100, and to murder a certain saxo loving member's S2000. Basically, Group N ECU, De-Cat, and full exhaust. BHP around 180-185bhp.

The problem is you never quite know how much the other driver is trying.I've been off the furum for a couple of years now but have had the pleasure of owning both scoob and clio 182,both of witch were moded.I would personaly say if both cars were running standard then it would be close in a straight line,you've got to remember the clio is lighter than the scoob,but i'd steer away from looking in the mags at facts and figs,in the real world it don't mean s##t.Both are very capable cars,i had mine up against a friend who has a 350z
there was nothing in it until tripple figs,again there was my other friend who has a tvr tuscan who s##t on us both (straight line speed).When the twisties came up the clio/350 were gone.At the end of the day it's swings and roundabouts,but for alot of cars the buck stops at the drivers ability.

I had a clio 172 was a pile of crap, new engien gear box and every thign else by 35k... it was nippy mind up to around the 110 mark then it died unless you really revved it to get the VVT working. Id say my Mk4 gti remapped to 220/240 at the end was fatser both from the mark and top end....... an the derv has so much more torque and torque is what matters

GTI as in 1.8T petrol? You could manage 220hp, but the diesel hits about 180 from 130 and 200 at a push from a 150. 220 - 240 you need to be heavily modifying.

What did you expect? At the end of the day you're comparing a modified car with a standard car. Standard against standard, or modified against modified, the outcome would be different. I'm sure a standard golf would be "owned" and called slow against a modified Clio.

This is one of the biggest misconceptions people make about the 1*2 engines.

The VVT in no way works like the VTEC/VVTI engines from a performance point of view!

The VVT kicks in low down to aid emissions at low revs and also stablise the low end running as the cams as standard whilst aren't what you'd call lairy they are enough to give it a choppy idle.

The "kick" you get at 5k or so revs is merely the engine coming on cam, much like the old F7P 1.8 renault engines which gave you a little extra push around 4.5-5k.

For what it's worth I find the Clio goes ok up to legal speeds, as soon as you hit illegal territory it does die off pretty quickly. Although sometimes I find it more hard going than others, but top end I'd have thought a powerful diesel would have the edge in a motorway type run.

Problem is there is huge power differences from one car to the next. Mine has always been a "quick" one and more so after mods. My m8 recently had a 5 hour trial map on his Mk5 GTi. Supposed to have been 260+..not sure of the torque. He took me out and it was very smooth but obviously quick. I went out expecting a hammering off him but from a 50mph roll to 125 he only pulled a couple of cars. I've no doubt that as the speed increased and especially once I changed to 5th gear he would have pulled and pulled away easily but we were both surprised about how well mine did. Don't take my word for it being quick but equally don't listen to the scaremongers out there...you only really hear people shouting with problems and although I have had my share at the end of the day it`s a 10k car that punches above it's weight and gets ragged every day....Can't make an omelette.....

You never know anything about another car in a so called "race". I have about 200bhp/ton and recently had some ricer in a Honda Civic trying it on on a long country road.

I humoured him having just had my car mapped and went to accelerate away from him, but the mapper had fecked my induction up and I only had 50% throttle, anything more the car would cut out.

He overtook me and I left him too it so he marked that as a victory. I looked like I was trying to him, but had no power.

The Clio Cup's i've been in, and indeed my own 205 have been a match for classic Scoobs, never mind Golf diesels.
