why do all cossies have 300+bhp?
#2
Johnny-Boy,most cossies have the stage 2 conversion cause it doesnt require a rebuild, anything higher does ie lower compression etc.A stage 2 is a 3bar map senser,-31 actuator,Dark Green injectors, exhuast, better filter, suitable chip, you can get away with a standard turbo providing it's not run above 22psi ish which equals 330 ish bhp.
Which i tell you is quick enough for a rwd car like mine!!!!

there are standard ones out there, usually concourse condition and never taken above 15mph as its driver on and of a car trailer. cars like this are meant to be driven. other than that 300 bhp comes for £500 ish so why not.

Dazc2,
Like to know who can do a PROPER 300bhp for £500!!!!
Ima,
Thats unless you have an Escort Cossie, which can produce 1.8 bar on the standard turdbot!!! ;-)

you can get as much as 380ish out of the cos before rebuilds and low comp are required. its on the limit then though and the 4x4 gear box wont take much more. with a set of blue or grey injectors a suitable intercooler and about 28 psi of boost on top of the stage 3/330bhp conversion will see a standard engine to its limit

shaun,rough estimation only
-31 actuator £75 (set at 22psi boost)
4x dark greens £60 each (£240)
3bar map sensor £65
stage 2 chip £200
total £580
this set up gave 304 bhp and 314lb of torque on mine

Cossie's @330bhp dosn't cost alot, basicaly it's race engine de-tuned for the road, for you scooby's owners to have a 330 BHP cost a fortune, cossie's come with: steel crank, steel conrods,Mahel pistions, soldium filled valves, fosil bronze guids,so you have a good base engine to start, scooby's come with only 10% modifing margine, cast crank ,cast rods,lol.....race car scooby

SK,
"Fosil bronze guids"
I know that the Cossie engines are bit long in the tooth now days, but ......
Do the steel internals come from the "Iron Age"
Sorry mate, couldn't help it...

Dazc2,
What about the straight through exhaust system, replacement filter, head gasket, fuel pump (if you own an escort). Plus the labour and a RR session to check the fueling & boost. Oh yeah and on a 2wd a NEW BLOCK, cause the original chocolate one will CRACK!!!

Funny how 36 psi and nos never melted my 2wd block.....think you will find it is other reasons that they crack oh great knowledge mr shaun ROFLOL!

a block is not neccessary until about 28 psi. the blocks only crack with high boost and the stresses involved. the standard head gasket is up to the job at 300 horse and would only replace it above. the rr sesion is not required either as you only need to set the boost up and set the emmisions to 5.5% co. the std air filter is also fine and is the exhaust. the s/s exhaust on the sapphire only added 5 horse. the figures i quoted are for my sapphire 4x4 with the mods stated

Stage 1,
36psi, and NOS, and you ONLY get 380bhp.....you need a Scooby mate
Mark. G*d, am I going to enjoy giving you lot the same sh*t you've been giving us

Martin,
What YOU ran and what MANY PEOPLE have told me, is that the standard 3dr/Sapphire block is the weakest of the lot!!! I had spoken to a number of people who have said the standard 2wd block (not the RS500 one that is), is a bit fragile to run a PROPER 330bhp through...........Whether that is because of boost or whatever I don't know.
Only passing on what others have informed me about.

As regards to people saying that they dont need a rolling road set-up when moving to a 300/330 bhp conversion........
All I can say is how do you know the fuel has the right pressure? How do you know the fuel pump is working effeciently enough to supply the correct amount for this conversion. How DO YOU know that the chip isn't cack, running at mega CO %.
Believe me, I have had an engine blow because the fuel pump was knacked and wasn't flowing at it's correct rate. This would of been diagnosed if the car had been ran on a RR before!!!
THINK ABOUT IT!!!

Not a vendetta mate, just trying to have a debate, but......!!!

Standard Head Gasket.......
Depends on driving style. And I believe that the Head Gaskets on 2wd cars are very prone to blowing because of the head/block design????
Exhaust System........
I know for a fact that the Mongoose FULL system on the Escort makes a huge amount of difference especially in the mid-range punch. Can't comment on the Sierra's though.
Air Filter.........
Replacing the panel filter may not give you 100bhp, but changing it to another uprated panel filter will only help some.

the 205 block is the weakest. the escort cosworths had a crap pump on them anyway. most tuning companys advertise stage 2 300bhp for around £600 pounds. i have always been under the impression and experience of other poeple that a rr sesion is on top of the price of the conversion and is at the customers discression. a mapping sesion will be required for the serious conversions. the way in which the fueling is altered for increased boost is by increasing the size of the injectors with standard fuel pressure.
#25
inevitably the air filter and exhaust will help some but on my sapphire it was rolling roaded with standard at the quoted figures. as for the 205 block head gaskets yes they had an inherant fault where water would seep out at one corner causing a water leak but not leakage from the fire rings.

Funny cos I'm at that stage at the moment.
I'm running a 200 block and head with 2wd zorst manifold, 3 bar map, -31, greens, 4x4 intercooler, s/s etc. Now mine is going in for a Group A head gasket cos it seems to be blowing across the oilways and waterways.
You should also run a decent oil breather system, cos the standard one is cr@p, and doesn't help crankcase pressure, as I've found to my dismay! (Castrol RS is very expensive when it's going out the exhaust at a pint a week!)
Cool, my first post!

I agree that you should uprate the breather system, with a 2 or 3 port jobby, but have found using a breather filter off the return to the airbox has been suffice for me.
Well.........it hasnt blown my crackcase apart yet any how!!!

Oh - I had a standard breather too LOL
Rocket - car made 380hp @ wheels on the same rollers that mike rainbirds 515hp dynoed engine made 395hp @ wheels and dingys 410hp dynoed engine made 310hp at wheels so yes I was happy with it.
Made the 380 at 23psi at the top end - just ran 36 in the mid for a bit of punch.....well wheelspin but hey it was good fun Including spinning up 4th in the dry....pulled the engine out the next day as I almost hit the back of a police car and avoided getting in trouble somehow!
Martin
Next engine is going to be slightly higher spec

Cosworth engines are without doubt exceptional pieces of kit!
But the real struggle with owning a Ford is the remaining build
quality, i.e. squeaks and rattles/harsh ride come as standard. Who could live with their fugly Ford looks and last but not least they handle about as well as a shopping trolley with a wonky wheel round a Tesco's car park with 4 latchkey bods in tow
Only jesting, they do go well but I wouldn't own one as I design/develop Ford engines/calibrations all bl00dy day. Don't rate build quality of Ford interiors.

The 205 block is fine upto 350bhpish. You dont NEED an uprated breather system, I run 22psi on a standard breather as its perfectly adequate. My car hasnt been rolling raoded and hasnt blown up yet, but then I know the fuel pressures ok as Ive a brand new pump and tank It would be sensible to check that its fueling properly throughout the rev range though but then as Im investing in some more mods at the present I think Ill wait until its all finished before investing in some RR time.
I would say a Group A h/gasket or equivilent is reqired for any state of tune from stage 1 upwards. Unless you just want to wait for the standard one to blow, which it will.
Youll also need an uprated turbo to run 22psi unless, again, you just want to wait until the standard one gives up the ghost.
R19RKT,
If you dont think 380bhp @ the wheels is much you should try keeping up with a Cossy with 260bhp at the wheels and see what happens
