Angry BMW 3 Series Problems HELP!

Took my E46 323ci in took the dealer yesterday as there were problems with the electronics:
1) Indicator lights not coming on on dashboard, although indicators actually working
2) Radio can't 'see' CD changer
3) Traction control switching itself on/off.
4) Car has on occasion just stopped as if someone has pulled the key out, all power everything gone, just rolls to a halt.

Anyone seen this before? Dealer gave me the "it's going to be a biggie" patronising talk and wants the car for a couple of days, is there anything I can do to limit their crazy billing? And yes, the warranty has expired. Any help advice gratefully received. Never has these problems with the Impreza!!!

I would bet this is an earth fault. Sounds like one of the dashboard connections to the chassis is either loose or corroded. It could also be the supply but thats slightly less likley

Have you had anything fitted in the last 6 months that might have disturbed a connection?, have a look around under the dash and see if you can find the earth points (lots of black wires leading to one bolt/screw) and check they are secure.

A wiring fault can be a real pain to sort (EVO V starter ) and a dealer will charge a lot as it may take a long time to find, may take minutes. An auto electrician would be the best bet. They have seen it all and don't charge you main dealer labour rates.

Don't take it to a main dealer!

If you post where abouts you are in the country i'm sure someone will give you a name of somewhere else to try.

I agree there. The car's outta warrenty, take it to a reputable independant BMW specialist and save upto 50% on the bill.

Not sure myself but without sounding like i'm trying to push you away from Scoobynet (which i'm not!!!) You could try somewhere like here; http://www.bmw-forums.com/forum/forum17.html

If that doesn't help maybe try a Google search as i remember there's a few BMW owners forums.

www.bmwland.co.uk is a good bet for this sort of thing.

Agreed though, if it's out of warranty stay away from main dealers.
