How the hell Does Chris Harris(AutoCar) afford a Gallardo??
#4
you're not telling me a journalist as he is earns serious serious money surely?
To realistically be able to borrow the money for the car, hed have to be earning what 60/70/80k or more - I somewhat doubt he earns anymore than 50k -sorry total finger in the wind but the monthly payments would be something like 2k a month mininum wouldnt they?? even on hpi etc
So it must be some swizz, ie Im a high profile journo, Ill say its ace in Autocar every month and get you loads of exposure.
Either way hes a g1t, but good luck to him, Id have done the same

Pretty sure he is actually a free lance Journo... its entirely possible to earn more than 50k a year doing that if you are good... also he may have other business interests that being freelance enables him to get stuck into. He may have rich parents or suddenly had an inheritance or something as well BUT I would imagine its got NOTHING to do with Autocar though.
Also its possible to get repayment schemes that have say 10k deposit, decent amount a month BUT with a huge balloon payment at the end. If he had some savings thats not had to manage, 2k a month on car repayments isn't too outrageous for a short period even if you aren't a millionaire. I would imagine he isn't planning on owning it long (he keeps going on about resale values) and if he is using this method, he may just be trying to run the car for say 6 months, have a once in a limetime experience of actually buying a 100k supercar and then sell it on for as small as loss as possible. Lambos normally have horrific depreciation BUT if he times it right, he may be even able to sell it on to someone who just can't be bothered to wait for a small profit! Good luck to the man I say!

I don't think Lambo need the publicity of giving out free cars in exchange for good write ups. Most of us will never be able to afford one so will buy the mag to see what the whole buying and ownership experience is like.
Perhaps A/Car have given Harris the deposit and have underwritten the £2k month repayments or whatever they are just for the story, and Lambo have accepted the order as for all intents and purposes it's a private sale.
I have a couple of journo mates and they are very dubious about an A/Car editor earning enought to buy a Lambo so assume it's a big fat inheritance or a money moving sceme like I've just said here. Happy to be corrected though....

Isn't he editor of Autocar?
I would be very suprised if he did not earn more than 50k.
You don't even need that good a job in the south east to get that sort of cash.

No he isn't the editor... I'm sure he is a freelance writer who used to work full time for them. his job title is listed as 'writer at large' Sounds free lance to me.
I'd have a friendly fiver that the editor of Autocar, Steve Sutcliffe does earn more than 50k a year.

Yeah - Chris Harris is now freelance, used to be road test editor. Steve Sutcliffe is now the editor - until recently it was Steve Fowler, formerly of What Car, who is now at What Hi Fi!
How do I know for sure - we send PR to 'em all the time.....

Clarkson also freelances for other mags and papers, makes a mint out of personal appearances and must make a stack out of those utterly awful "Best car in the world", "Mayhem" and "Look at me" videos which are repeated ad nauseum on UK Horizons most weekday evenings.
OK so he's got an SL55AMG and I haven't so maybe I can't complain....

No way are Autocar financing that.... I get lots of important stuff sent to my work address. Also he knew that they would want to print it, so why put his home address and new resting place of the Lambo in print for all to see!

Not sure about the guy you're referring too but Clarkson is def loaded!! I wouldn't mind betting he's earning £200k per year at least..........I mean if Gary Rhodes charges £2000 for 3 hours to help you cook, just imagine what Clarkson charges for a personal appearance at a corproate/motoring event.

With respect bashful's Clarkson question, never mind the F355/SL55, where the hell did he manage to get his hands on the ex RAF Lightning Interceptor that sits on his front lawn
Ask Paddington Bear. He knows

If you look at the pictures of his order in Autocar, the address he has given is Autocar Offices, rather than his home address which would indicate that it is probably being financed by Autocar.
Unless of course he lives at Autocar offices!!
