911(996) Turbo - blimey!
#1
Well youd be surprised if I was dissapointed I guess - but my mate picked up his brand new 996 turbo about 2 weeks ago and we went for a blip.
Well its a simply awesome car, I m saving now. So quick, grippy and so every day useable - turns heads big time too.
Thought the scoob was good, but this is a different league all together! Just need to find 80k now

fastest a to z and point to point is a evo by far
in a straight line the turbo will be faster but only against a evo below 390 bhp, if u have a stroker, the 996 turbo is bye bye
p1's are fast but pity cant eek alot of power out of them otherwise they will be awesome

er.. Moses - if you're adding another 100 or so bhp to your standard Evo (390 as you said), surely it would only be fair comparison if you gave a similar increase to the Porker?

I think the 996 turbo is probably the fastest car in the world point-to-point
Bit like comparing turbo Novas to Scoobs imo.
If I had the money for a 911 then I wouldn't be seen dead in any jap turbo car.
May make an exception for an R34 tho

i mean a 390 bhp or under 420 bhp evo seem to beat 996 turbos on track and as some race videos ive seen, is it coz of the short ratio gearbox i dont know

You could of course get an EVO to be faster than a 996 Turbo even if you spent didn't spend the same money, however the bottom line is that it would be a modded up Jap car and the other would be a performance and style icon which sets some of the highest standards in the world of motoring. Don't even talk about depreciation. You cannot compare cars on a single dimension of performance or whatever as you need to own the whole package, not just the bit that you think makes it good.

cam i understand mate but theirs more fun in a modded jap car than anything else and a evo is only a 2 litre engine and still whupps turbos and gt2's in most tracks , especially the stroker evos their in a different category altogether
but i like the 996 turbo its awesome

It truly would be interesting to see a scooby s202 or Evo 8 with suitable mods, be compared to a 911 Turbo. I think it would be a lot closer on b-roads than many might think- as there is really nothing inherent to the 911 chassis that should give it an advantage in handling.

new scooby sti is suppose to be real good too
what u have to remember is porker has 448 ft torque , so a evo or scoob at least needs 380 to beat it
evos and scoobs are good at that

A Porsche 996 turbo only has 414lb ft torque whereas a gt2 has 457lb ft. Would like to see an evo or a subaru beat one, i know they probably would if running 450bhp but until i see it dont think i will be believing it.

At a track day at Bruntingthorpe, I was up there with the 'normal' 911's and the Boxsters, but you tended to move over quickly when the 996 Turbos (2 of them) were in your mirrors.
When the runway was closed for a radar speed run, they were a good 40mph quicker !
Unrelenting power, poise, grip and traction was the way they looked to me !

Moses - If you're comparing trackday drivers of your "stroker" Evo (what's one of them - the engine has a longer stroke to increase capacity?) to a 996 Turbo driver, I reckon the Porsche drivers are usually not pushing too hard. They're often sober middle-aged guys who don't want to bend their £80k motors. Evo drivers are more likely to be pushing to the ragged edge.

David,have you had a run against an X50 996tt?
In the hands of "gods" on a track, I suspect the GT2 would have the edge.
I bought the GT2 because it was a monster with zero driver aids.

I too have a black gt2, the interior in the front is the same as a turbo with exception to the front side door speakers in the back there is only carpet and a gt2 badge, hardly basic though with climate control, electric windows and all the rest. I had a 996 turbo before and it is nowhere near as fast as the gt2. Not sure on the X50 but i would have thought that the gt2 would be quicker in a straight line (not by much) as once the car is hooked up from a start it is immense and although it is only 2wd the grip is quite astonishing. A-B the x50 would be quicker due to the driver being able to push the car harder with the knowledge of having the PSM to save them whereas the gt2 has no traction aids at all except for abs.

A tuned Evo might match the 996 turbo, but do u think it'll last as long? Will it be able to do the huge mileage a Porsche can do without falling apart? A 996 also doesn't need to be serviced so often, provided it hasn't been on the track 24/7.
The Jap videos I've seen have shown that not even a R34 V-Spec 2 can match the 996tt, for that they need a Nismo 400R.
