Question

I've not done any motor mechanics before, but I'd like to buy and run a track car on a reasonably small budget (2-3 grand).

Anyone got suggestions on a motor that's easy to service/take apart so I can learn how to do the prep work as well as enjoy the driving?

I was thinking of doing this using a Mk1 MR2.

Fisher Fury would be nice, but the one I would want is over 10k (Furyblade).

A 205 Challenge rally car will set you back around £3500, ready to roll.

Track day it as you wish, but why not do the real thing and go rallying?

Some good suggestions here. Olly, I'm really interested in the Rally Challenge - can I get more info from somewhere?

On that sort of budget,an old hot hatch is the way to go. I know someone who got a Mk1 Golf GTi for just over £1000, spent c£8000 on engine tuning, suspension, wheels & slicks and most importantly weight reduction and got himself a track car able to shame a impreza on track. Now planning to fit a VW 1.8T engine (ex-TT from a breaker c£1000), that will give him over 250bhp/tonne in standard form, 300+ after playing with it.

Best thing is, as it cost virtually nothing, he doesn't worry about taking it on track and pushing it!!

Not as fast or scary as my westie, but my westie cost me £13k!

Mike - i'm building a 205gti track car at this very minute for 750mc 'Stock Hatch' (www.750mc.co.uk) - that should come in at about £3k all in as mechanical mods are limited.

205s or 106s are the way to go - or Fiesta's if you want to go really cheap. Look in the back of CCC for ready built cars - a much cheaper option as I've found out!

Mike - Car and Car Conversions Mag - now known as CCC - normally have a good choice of track and rally cars for sale in the classifieds - expect to pay about 2500 for a reasonably decent car. building your own is more expensive, and is taking me forever....

Thanks for all the suggestions and advice - all I need to do now is pick a suitable motor and then spend 8k on tuning, don't I Gary?
