Looking to change the Scoob.
Have found a 2000 model V8 Discovery with an LPG conversion.
Does anyone have any experience of these?

4wd, heavy on fuel, not as quick as you'd like. Pretty much the same as a Scoob. Probably not as fast in the twisties though.

Have you tried a Cherokee? I used to be saddled with 4wd's as comapny cars in the Middle East and the Cherokee was the only one I'd ever consider paying my own money to drive (didn't ever have a Disco though).

BTW A mate is staying with me just now and he is looking for a Cherokee but reckons (from asking around and looking at dual fuel cars' official figures) that LPG gives more like 60% the mpg that unleaded does rather than the 85% that the convertors suggest.

Servicing and parts for the cherokee are VERY expensive, a colleague has one and it has cost him a small fortune to run.

He still has it though so it must be some merits.

I tried a Jeep and the bit I didn't understand was I could hardly fit in it.
I'm 6 foot 4 but I thought it was built for 'big' Americans?
My knees were on the dashboard.

Fair enough; on the servicing etc. front my mate has just this month left the trade as a mechanic, so he'll do his own.

Size-wise I'm 5'11" and it wasn't a problem for me, but I did have the seat right back thinking about it, and the rear doors are prety small. I suggested it mainly as, coming from a Scoob, you may appreciate the opportunity for opposite lockery that the Cherokee affords.

I have carried out extensive testing on the fastest cars on the London rush hour test track and the Discovery wins every time but only buy if you have a warranty as they are less reliable than a 150k sierra that has a kenwood sticker on the back.

Yup - agree the disco's are a bit ropey so pick a good one, and get it with a 2 year warranty from the dealer.

I have been told that Discos (and other landrovers) are one of the easiest 4x4s to do work on, and parts are readily available (this was by the mechanic who did the clutch on my Impreza - local indipendant garage)

Also Dad has a TDi Disco, and he's had problems with the intercooler piping collapsing and with the immobiliser. Both are known weaknesses with the Discovery (especially the immobiliser!) He got the dealer to change the immobiliser FOC in the first few months after a "falling out" with them. Other than that, it's ben a great vehicle for him.
